True story: I never touched snow that stayed on the ground until I was 21. It was at Lake Tahoe, and technically it was on a beach, but I still had no idea what to do with this strange stuff. (Pictured on right.)
Growing up in Houston, where I’m visiting now, it gets plenty cold and often rains, but snow? Never. I think once when I was in elementary school some flakes fell from the sky and the city basically shut down in amazement. When I was younger (okay, maybe 16) whenever the sky was white with clouds my father would declare “Those are snow clouds.” Everyone would laugh, but I didn’t get the joke until a good 20 years of my life had passed without meaningful amounts of snow.
There was one exception. Christmas of ’04 I had just moved to San Francisco and started a job at CNET two months before. My rent was 6x what it had been in Houston and between that and some other travel I was completely broke by the time December came around. of course I couldn’t tell my parents, so I had some sort of logical reason why my first Christmas away from home I wasn’t going to be able to visit, and I didn’t. It wasn’t a total wash, I ended up writing bbPress and doing a lot of the work for what would become WordPress 1.5. But that one year I didn’t go back a nationwide snow storm brought Houston its very first White Christmas. My friends Sarah and Jess delighted in rubbing it in:

While these look like innocent pictures, they really stung. I vowed never to miss a Christmas in Houston again, knowing full well that there will probably never be another White Christmas in my lifetime
But now regardless of the weather conditions wherever you’re spending this holiday season, you can at least have snow on your blog! Go to your Dashboard, then Presentation, then click on Extras and you’ll see this:

Check the box, hit save, and you and your visitors will see small white flakes of snow coming down on your blog. (This works best if you don’t have a theme with a white background.) Much like snow in Houston, the flakes won’t stay long on the ground, I think because our servers tend to be a little hot. This feature will be available for a limited time only, on January 2nd it will disappear until next year, but just imagine it as our little present to you, an opportunity to spread a little cheer.
Merry Christmas! Here’s a latin jazz version of Let it Snow to listen to while activating the feature:
Update: As promised, the snow has melted away until next year.

In my town in Canada, there was a record breaking snowfall of 50cm. Nothing like that has happened in half a century. I think you may have gotten part of it. Merry Christmas Matt 🙂
wooooa i love this effects! Q: why do you guys have only one extra? it’ll be more fun if there’s more effects on extra, bro!
First of, thank you for the effect and blessed Christmas and New year to you and yours. It is snowing in Florida now. This is really very nice. Thank you once again
As a Canuck I just assume snow is what you need at Xmas. Looking forward to the new year but sadly it will be without a great Canadian Jazz great Oscar Peterson. If you could include him in the notes in your next release that would be great.
I love falling snow!! Thank you very much matt!
So, with just the flick of a button I can make it snow in Hawaii? Forgive the pun but — Cool!
Oh, Gosh! It is actually snowing on my blog! Thanks Matt….this is so cool!

Matt, there is enough snow here in Minneapolis to keep us occupied all winter long…
Thanks for the extra!
Just LOVE it! I spend my time dreaming of snow covered mountains (really! It’s my tagline) so this is just perfect……can’t I keep it? PLLLLLLLEEEEEEEAAAAAAAASSSSSSSEEEEE? I won’t tell anyone.
Awesome, thanks. I love snow. Used to have the same thing in a screensaver for Mac System 7.x. Anyone else remember that?

Although the falling snow doesn’t “fit” my theme, at least it’ll give my friends and family the “feel” of snow and something to look at. 😉 Thanks, Matt and a very wonderful & prosperous New Year to you!

Oh I love it! what a great gift to us. Thanks
Matt…Thanks for the snow! It works amazingly with my Happy New Year Post! I’ve gotten dozens of e-mails about it!
Happy 2008!
Regards, Artie Wayne http://artiewayne.wordpress.com
the falling snow is great, i ♥ it!
thank you!
MATT!
I LIVED IN NEW YORK FOR A LONG TIME, AND IT WAS A LOT OF SNOW THAT I HAD TO SHOVEL, SO MY MEMORIES ARE VAGUE, BUT THE FIRST NIGHT OF SNOW IS THE BEST EXPERIENCE, BECAUSE THE SNOWFLAKES ARE BIGGER AND THEY FLOAT BEFORE THEY LAND, SO PICTURESQUE AND ROMANTIQUE. HAPPY NEW YEAR! AND TO ALL OF YOU OUT THERE.
Love the snow.
Very nice story. Thanks for sharing your snow with everyone.
Happy New Year!
Thanks for this lovely feature! I am getting lot of compliments from my visitors! 🙂
here in the tropics we don’t have snow…. so it is nice to see snow falling in my blog. It is out-of-this-world! I like it. What if you make something different for other seasons? Like flowers falling for spring, leaves falling for autumn, etc. That’s only an idea. Thanks a lot.
Awesome! Thank you! Is there any way to extend it through the whole winter? Maybe end of Feb?
Dear Matt
And I have only read this now!! What a good way to tell me: it’s a good idea to read those messages from the wordpress guys – sooner!! 🙂
I find it beautifull! And by the way, like you, I only saw any flake of snow at all, for the firs time, when I was 18/19! :)…. it was in London that I saw it…
Ok, I’m gonna try to fix this. Pity it is only until 2 January. How about extending it to 6 January? – That is the traditional day to close the Christmas celebration, the day that the 3 Wise Kings have arrived.
But whatever you decide, thanks for all the good work, and wishes of a good New Year to you and whosoever has taken the time to read this (too long message) 🙂
same here, never seen actual snow ever in my life, this might help a little though LOL
Love it. Love it, love it, love it. Thank you.
Hi Matt – that’s a kind though and a great gift for the Christmas holidays… kind of you and the WordPress team.
Kind regards
That’s awesome!! I’m in Houston- so I know what you’re talking about. (And I hate to rub it in, but that White Christmas of ’04 was beautiful!) I went to college in Colorado though, so I also make the “snow clouds” comment to people. Thanks for the feature!
Hey Matt, Christmas Season in all Latin American countries closes Jan 6th. We’re talking about some 520 million people. Of other countries, I know at least Spain also closes that same date…. that would be over 44 millions more. Would you please consider extending these beautiful falling flakes until then… please please please? 🙂 (Thanks in advance).
Thanks a lot Matt…but it will be winter for a few days into March in some parts 🙂
Now my computer is running slowly, very slowly.
The feature should be a viewer option, not an author option.
When I arrived at the main site I saw no way of disabling it – as a viewer.
It also is an energy waster with its high processor activity.
It’s funny! After moving from the West Coast, I had no desire to see snow. But after being in Baltimore for a few years, I’m itching for a snow storm! Since we haven’t had any white precipitation yet, I’ll settle for your cool improvisation. Kudos to WordPress. You guys Rock!
Yes please extend them at least until the 6th! I just saw the post about this and love it. Wish I’d seen it sooner so I could have enjoyed it longer.
And while you’re at it, any other little freebie things you can add to the Extras to give us some cool effects after the snow goes away?? 🙂
How fun is that, thanks, can’t we keep it longer????
Thanks MAT, but don’t forget…..
and let it snow let it snow let it snow..
and the snow that doesn’t stop falling goes so well with your words .. it’s all so lovely
Merry Christmas guys and Thank you !
Thanks! Love the way the larger flakes drop faster… nice touch.
Let it snow let it snow!
YAY!
Cool, thanks!
Love the falling snow extra! I wish we could have it longer than January 2 though. We are in Michigan and I will have a winter picture as my header through January (and probably February) – the falling snow looks so great on it!
The snow is awesome! Could you possibly keep it up for awhile longer than Jan 2nd? Thanks 🙂
Excellent! I lived at South Lake Tahoe for 15 years. The second year I was there (1982) we had over 800 inches of snow. One learns to ski soon… or one… GOES CRAZY with cabin fever.
Nice story Matt.
robert in SF
Falling snow. I love it! WordPress.com rocks. Thanks, Matt
Well, I grew up in the Philippines and saw snow only in pictures. I got to touch a snow flake when I was 25 when my flight touched down in Baltimore, MD. I used to dream of it… now I’m just sick of it. LOL.
This is such a lovely and wonderful gift, Matt, thank you!
It seems a particularly fitting gift for us here in New Hampshire today… we have 1-2″/hour falling currently…!
I only regret that I found it so late, and that it couldn’t stick around as our New England winter… Alas, best things are often the most fleeting…
Thanks again, Matt. Happy 2008!
Oh thank you! And if you could make it last just a little longer…I would forever be grateful!!!
can it snow a little longer? we’re lovin it–maybe until my birthday 1/11?? please?
Cute! Ha, I just discovered it now since I’m relatively new to WordPress.. ah, well.. atleast I get to have during this one day.. 😉 I hope you’ll keep it in the future as well (and keep it free ;)).
he…he…he…
Simply beautiful, thanks and Happy New Year.
Great idea! The falling snow is just so cool… especially when I only see old grass out my window. Thanks!
Hey, we know it’s a big request… but our website is a ski/snow/telemark/snow/flakes related… so, we were wondering if it were possible to have the “let it snow.. let it snow” feature permanent… is it too late for a christmas present?… thanks again, and if you are a telemarker… check out our web site http://www.telemarkfilmfestival.com
Dear Matt and everybody at WordPress,
In parts of England and Wales we are hoping for our first real snow of the winter tomorrow, January 3rd. We only get one or two days of snow a year—if we are lucky!—here, so it is greeted with such excitement by all kids, young and old. Just to echo a few comments above, I too would appreciate your beautiful WordPress snow lasting until Twelfth Night, January 5th/6th to the end of the Christmas season and school holidays 😉
I love the snow!!! Thanks for adding it as an extra; I just wish I noticed it sooner! Can’t wait till it comes back later this year.
Happy New Year!!
Love the softly falling snow on my blog but heh, couldn’t we keep it a bit longer!!! Maybe the end of January? There isn’t enough snow on the ground outside here and I miss having a really white winter.
Happy 2008!!!!
How about a couple more days….or maybe till the end of this month…????
thank you!!
GRACIAS COMPA!!
Thanks, Matt –
my header photo is a sunset view taken over the valley in which our farm sits, & the snow looks great, gently drifting over the hills. We may even get some of the real ‘white stuff’ later today; but I’d prefer it to remain in the confines of the Blog – it may be pretty but it makes farming hard work whilst it’s here!
Really appreciate the addition of this festive cheer to the Blog – what’s it going to be for Easter….?!
Wishing you & all WordPress Bloggers, a peaceful & prosperous 2008.
Hey (looking out of my WordPress window on the world) … it’s January 3 … and it’s still snowing!
Has the snow feature taken on an organic life of its own?
Or has it something to do with the time difference between two parts of the world?
Anyway … Happy New Year!
