The Digg API was shut down in 2014.
Much of the work we do at Automattic is behind the scenes, infrastructure you’ll (hopefully) never notice or see, but we’re always thinking about how the improvements we make to the foundation of the site will allow us to build more interesting things on top of it.
Today, one of those developments comes to fruition — everyone’s free upload space has been increased 60x from 50mb to 3,000mb. To get the same amount of space at our nearest competitor, Typepad, you’d pay at least $300 a year. Blogger only gives you 1GB. We’re doing the same thing for free.
Our hope is that much in the same way Gmail transformed the way people think about email, we’ll give people the freedom to blog rich media without having to worry about how many kilobytes are left in their upload space.
How are we able to do this? Over the past year we’ve developed our file infrastructure, replication, backup, caching, and S3-backed storage to the point where we don’t feel like we need to artificially limit what you folks are able to upload just to keep up with growth. We’re ready for you. 🙂
What about the space upgrades? They’re still important. You still need a space upgrade to upload certain file types, like movies, and we’re also increasing the limits of the paid upgrades, so if you bought a 1GB upgrade before it now adds 5GB for no additional charge.
very cool !!! thanks people B)
… *glomptacklehug* You guys just made my life so much easier!!!! 😀 Thanks!!!!!
wow,
thanks a lot wordpress……..kudos to you people…..
thank you for all you are doing to help people blog for free on internet…..
Thank you very much. Since my blog has only a modest-sized following, I probably would never exceed the original limit, but I do appreciate this free service.
I’m not “geeky” at all, and really don’t understand how you can offer this wonderful opportunity without some charge. Not complaining! Happy about it!
Next month I will have been here two years–it’s been lots of fun, informative and inspirational. I’ve “met” lots of people from around the world. Thank you, WordPress.
OMG OMG OMG THANKS SOOOO MUCH!
Now I feel silly for buying the 1 gig upgrade on Dec. 19.
I have no idea how I’ll fill 8 gigs, but thanks for including the additional upgrade space to those who pay you.
Is there any way to mass download stuff you after you upload it to WP.com? I click on the “Save” button for individual files but nothing downloads…
wordpress, you teh man!
;p
OMG! You’re the best! I love you 😀
Wordpress is and have always been the best site for bloggers. My friends using other blogspaces always complain and say “I should’ve used WordPress instead”.
Really a welcoming initiative…We have to Celebrate this as Blogger’s Day
Thanks for this……!!!
Cheers…..Happy Blogging….:))
बहुत अच्छे!
Its great!
I am pleased. Cold, but pleased.
sweet – thanks guys for making wordpress a great and FUN blogging experience.

Great ideea… Thanks !
This is absolutely and utterly cool, thanks!
Is this a belated Christmas present? Miss the Santa look Matt.
Wow! That’s just fabulous!
Thanks a lot, guys… Rock on! 😀
I am soo happy because of this! Now I can really upload a lot of pictures on my blog without worrying about the space limitations. But yeah it is really hard to fill up that whole space by just posting photos.
Thank you very very very much! WordPress can only get better!
You know, just yesterday I was looking at my 2% upload status and wondered if I would ever get up to 10%. And now you guys throw 3GB at me! What am I going to do?!
But really, you guys really know how to appeal to the people and at the same time gently encourage competition through your strategies with all the hard work you do. This is really awesome, and for those who don’t prefer social networking sites like YouTube for video upload, unlike me, they are going to love this even more.
Thanks WP! I’ll never have to worry about space again…until I finally get off my butt and get my own domain, that is.
Wow thanks! You guys really made my life easier for blogging. YOU ROCK WP!!!
Fabulous Matt,
Thanks to you and your friends we have been able to help change the direction of our country without worrying about reprisals from the government.
God bless you!
Hell yeah!!! Thanks!

This is a GREAT new addition. I always had to worry about my space before.
Sound great ! maybe i’m going to upload some files to wordpress.com 🙂
btw,thanks matt…although i don’t use this 3GB at wordpress.com, I still feel free now 🙂
You are brilliant! Thank you very much!!
Wow….
This is great!
This is GREAT news for all wordpress users – paid and free users.
One TIP/REQUEST: Is it possible somehow to implement Albums/Categories for images to be implemented, so that it is easier to find images that have been previously used in the blog, and then to use the same ones on new posts. This can be true for videos as well, but images will be very helpful.
This is a proof that WordPress is growing up. Another step to be mature web service, especially in blogging field. Great! Thanks a lot to know we don’t need to limit our blogging passion with this large 3GB.
Whoa, awesome! You guys rock.
Thank you!
Thank you!

=^.^=
Awesome! Thanks!
I just noticed the extra space this morning and thought, “do I have a secret admirer who bought extra space for me?” Although disappointed that I’m still unloved and so, so alone *wink*, I’m so happy about the extra space.
You guys are too good to us!
great!
This is wonderful news! One of my blogs is pretty graphic-intensive and I was getting a little nervous watching the numbers creep up. Thank you so much.
Great.
And I think this will encourages more people to host more blogs in WordPress — self-hosting only for those which interested in out-of-ordinary layouts and additional plugins. 😛
…and maybe will add more people that uses WordPress as their file storage. I’ve seen some blogs that completely empty but only filled with bunch of files.
this is totally awesome!!
Looks like I will not need my hard drive aymore. 😉 Thank you!
From 50mb to 3gb? Holy moly!
Thank you wordpress.
brilliant. tx
Great news!!!!
Thank you all!!
That’s great. Now if you’d just let all of us WP.com clients get google ads and the such on our sites, you’d never, ever, ever lose us!
Keep up the great work.
I love you guys!
All I can say is “Wow.” Well, that and “Thanks!” I’d just added the initial upgrade a month ago for the audio/podcast capacity, and now I have 5 gigs. WordPress rocks!
This is AWESOME!! Thank you so much… WordPress is the best!
Thank you soo much!!!!
WOW!
Cool. Like I always say, you guys rock!
Thank you very much!
Thank you *so* much!! This is fantastic news 🙂
superrrthankssssssss
Just one more reason that WordPress rocks !
Our relatively new blog (check it out) is still nowhere near using up the old limit of 50MB of free space, but it’s sure nice to know it’s there if we need it. Storage is inexpensive enough these days to allow Matt & company, Google, et al, to offer plenty of free space. Storage has gotten so cheap that we even got a FREE 4GB USB flash drive at a computer store (Micro Center) recently! Compare this to my first hard drive back in the 1980’s…. a whopping 30 MB that cost $300.00 !!! Back then (when nobody had even heard of something called WordPress) who would have believed that we could carry around 4 GB, 8 GB or more on our keychain or in our pocket ? In fact, back in the mid-80’s, buying enough hard drives (more than 150 drives @ 30MB each) to give you 5 GB of storage would have cost you $50,000.00 !!! Now, it’s FREE.
The best part? We got all of this free space AUTOMATTICALLY.
Freaked me out when I saw it just now. Thought there was a breakdown in the dashboard software. DIdn’t occur to me that ya’ll would be that sweet. Love you all, kiss, kiss!!
this is why I moved back to wordpress from typepad
thanks guys
Speakindia, I recall having heard those rumors about Gmail from the very beginning, (I am a first generation user, i.e. among those who Google invited at launch). Back then the word had it that they would become a paid service after the beta period when access was invitation based.
Those rumors have not turned out to be accurate. On the contrary, limits have successfully been increased. I do not believe Google would keep their users if they asked money for GMail and the same applies for WordPress.
I have every confidence in both GMail and WordPress. Keep up the good work. 🙂
thanks
What Mihael “D.B.” Ellinsworth is saying is that instead of paying 10 credits to link your domain to your wordpress blog you should get space too.
Thanks so much. You guys are awesome. 🙂
Hokey smokes!
Thanks, WordPress!!!
Really amazing. Thank you very much!.
Fabulous 🙂 Thanks so much!
That is just great, photo blogging here I come.
