April absolutely flew, I have no idea where it went.
Here’s what you rascals did last month, with a few new and improved stats:
- 240,494 blogs were created.
- 281,729 new users joined.
- 2,533,704 file uploads. (Y’all use the new uploader a lot more.)
- About 740 gigabytes of new files. (Estimated, better number next month.)
- 317 terabytes of content transferred from our datacenters. (Compare to last time we published transfer numbers.)
- 3,258,032 posts and 1,330,355 new pages.
- 4,903,485 logins.
- 655,178,604 pageviews on WordPress.com, and another 408,359,440 on self-hosted blogs. (1,063,538,044 pageviews total across blogs using our stats system. We broke a billion!!)
- 63,730,680 pageviews in RSS feeds.
- 884,208 active blogs, where “active” means they got a human visitor.
- 152,005,525 unique people visited WordPress.com-hosted blogs.
Random facts:
- About 30% of pageviews go to blogs with their own domains.
- 43% of pageviews to permalink pages.
- 30% of pageviews go to blogs in languages other than English. The most popular? Spanish, Portuguese, and Indonesian.
- 63% of our visitors were from outside of the United States.
- About 93% of pageviews were to people not logged in.
- People logged in somewhere using OpenID 84 thousand times.
- Blogs using the Digg3 theme got 5.26% of total traffic.
- There were 475 posts made via the Atom API (234,831 with XML-RPC).
- We sent 3,761,059 emails.
So many of our stats fall along 70/30 lines it’s scary.
Now for the juicy bits. Behold! Monotone.
Imagine a theme for photoblogging where every page looks like it was designed to match the picture. Monotone is a chameleon, it does sophisticated analysis of the image you upload to determine a complementary color scheme. The width of the page also changes based on the width of the photo.
You can see the demo site by clicking either of the images above.
Monotone takes the first (and only the first) image from your post and does its magic. Just make sure to select “full size” when you insert it. (The images must be uploaded to WordPress so we can resize them and extract out the colors properly. It also does best with BIG images.) The rest of the text is put below like a regular post. It only ever shows one post per page, but dig those archives.
A cool new theme, a new uploader, gigabytes of free space — you now have no good reason not to start a photoblog. Show the world what you’ve got. A week from today, if I remember, I’ll link to the coolest blogs using Monotone and will send literally dozens of viewers their way. Noel Jackson was the man behind the magic and we’re continuing to work with him on some top-secret projects.

As a non-photographer with LOTS of pictures, I immediately began a new blog just to see how it works! So very cool. A picture a day… I’m spreading the word to photographer friends as well…

i am loving the monotone theme, just wish it had a sidebar – without me having to fiddle with code 🙂

very cool. Thanks for the public data on wordpress and the new photo theme. Keep up the great work!
Funny !
Yay! I’d been looking around for a good image gallery to use for my new domain, but I just couldn’t find anything that I really liked. But, I really like this and I ❤ WordPress, so this works just fine!
I’m just redirecting my domain to my current photoblog at WordPress.com, until this theme comes out for hosted sites.

cooool! 🙂
the camera will start to work!
Yo….
excellent…!!!
hi all ,nice to meet u.this is good site.
________ August —— April — Rate of increase
NewUser ~176 K | ~282 K –> 60%
Logins ~2.5 million | ~5 million –> 100%
PageV. ~308 million | 655 Million –> 114%
T.Pg.V. ~420 million | ~ 1 Billion –> 138%
Very good stats.
I’d rather be able to scroll through the pictures under one post, than be limited to one photo a post, and have the color in the background change. Is there anyway to display more than one photo a post? That seems to get a little excessive for those of us (like me) that can’t pick just one shot they love.
I’m pretty new to the whole blogging scene, but I have been “blogging” in my journal for years, it’s just that no one was reading it. I have so appreciated WordPress and the possibilities that you guys have given me. I am going to start a photo blog and use this new Monotone blog too. Cool stuff. Great work. Obvious statements when you’re looking at a “tera” anything, or a billion whatevers. Now I just need to figure out how to get more views on my pages, any hints?
Live Life Large!
This makes me want to start a photo blog.
I like this design … like ‘aintgotno’ I wish it had a side bar (especially since I don’t know how to ‘fiddle with code’ or anything so savvy.
Oh… Pretty 🙂
I just started using it for http://lolebrity.wordpress.com and I’m a bit surprised to find you can’t make the image clickable to the source site. The concept of lolebrity is to get submissions from readers and have the images link directly to their sites. When you edit the post, the link is still on the image, but it doesn’t work in the post.
For now I guess I’ll just have to put a text link in. I love the way it displays too much to change it now.
Cool, will you create someday a cool pink Theme 😛 hehe, bye
That’s welcome news!
Hey that is damn neat…. not only for pics… just for the full tint feel that it would give the page…. great going…. keep them coming…
be well

It will help a lot to improve the visibility of blogs.

Fantastic …..
Monotone theme is just great…which inspired me to move few of my flickr photos to a new photo blog.

Thanks, monotone a great addition to worpress. I’ve started mine linked to my other blog. Really enjoying it.
I’m so excited to try Monotone and it’s giving me problems!! Is it back up and running?
Мэт дружище, спасибо тебе за вордпресс, но когда же ты дашь возможность вставлять рекламу и поддерживать скрипты ? =)))
hey Matt, I notice that most of the themes we have to choose from here are “quite old” – is there any way we can perhaps have some of the newer ones – there’s alot of great ones out there but it would be nice to be able to choose something more up to date 🙂
I love the new there. Suitable for persons who take a keen interest in photography. But why am I not able to add any widgets to the theme? ANy ideas?
I _love_ this theme! It’d be perfect for my purpose. Although, I think some changes should be made to allow the users more freedom on what else they want to show up besides the picture.
Also, LINKS in texts under the images don’t show up or at least not always (only if you find them by chance and hover over them). Maybe the links could take the next or second next neighbor color that the text has? E. g. black background, white text and grey links (or vice versa). Or let the users decide how they want to mark links (underlined and so forth…).
Good work! Keep going.
Thanks,
Jay
