Some may have noticed the “Turbo” link in the upper right corner of the admin area. (Remember when computers used to have a Turbo button?) Behind it is a new feature of WordPress.com, support for Gears.
Gears? It is a browser extension like Flash or QuickTime/Media Player. However Gears works with the browser to enhance web based applications. It can create local database and file storage, and run JavaScript in the background to update them without slowing down the browser.
Gears has been in the making for over a year and is well known among the web developers. Currently it supports Firefox versions 2 & 3 and Internet Explorer versions 6 & 7. Safari 3 support is coming soon.
On WordPress.com it is used to store all images and other web page components from the admin area to the user’s PC, speeding up access and reducing unnecessary web traffic.
The speed increase is most noticeable when Internet is slow or on high latency and makes everybody’s blogging experience more enjoyable.
To enable this new feature, click on the “Turbo” link and follow it to Gears’ site to install it in your browser (if not already installed). Then the browser will have to be restarted and after logging back in WordPress, click the “Turbo” link again to give permission to Gears to work on WordPress.com.
After that Gears will download around 200 files and store them on your PC. It will also update them when needed automatically in the background, no other actions are required.
The downloaded files will be used everywhere in the admin interface, speeding up every page load, enabling you to blog at faster than the speed of light.*
- Your mileage may vary.

Good to hear back from you with the new feature….
thanks for the update..
Greetings from the Future!
I use Opera – the best browser ever. I love Opera so much that I wouldn’t use any service that doesn’t work in opera, even google. Make anything in wordpres that works only in firefox or IE and you lose all opera users.
It is a fun to have a web blog
There was a comment on my blog at
that there may be security risks in (a) installing software for 3rd party services and (b) installing software which allows JavsScript code to be run.
Do you have any documentation which might address such concerns?
Honestly, I don’t see any difference. Anyone has a problem like me? (I use FF3)
Vamos a probarlo a ver qué tal.!
is amazing Thanks
Another very nice feature. Will help a lot people with a very slow net connection.
Excellent news. It really makes a difference. Keep up the good work.
Not gears related ; For the first time in awhile, I posted an image. When did you guys put that image gizmo in the post writing box thing. That’s cooool !!!!
We just got DSL a couple of days ago, and our wireless router this morning. So in other words, Gears comes out on WordPress at exactly the same time we switched from dial-up to high speed. I’ve got more speed than a junkie!
thats nice guys
thanks alot Matt
That’s pretty cool..
good work WP…
Yeah it´s great!
Thanks alot, it’s a hot stuff.
Cool feature. I already have seen and installed Gears, but now I’ve understood how it works.
Turbolicious
This looks interesting, but how much of our data is cached on the local machine? Is it just the UI elements of the interface, or are you planning to store frequently used images etc?
I have to say, I didn’t notice much of a speed increase, but I think it is a great idea regardless – speeds up people with slower connections, and saves your bandwidth bills (which must be astronomical – I never understand how you stay in business!)
Nice, Speeding Rocks! =D
Nice feature, thanx for making our life easy!
thank you
Sounds like a good idea. What about support for Opera?
Congratulations for this nice work
Nice. Blogging at speed of light!
I’ve just started WordPress and already I love the new idea.
I want to get it, but the “200 files” bit is putting me off.
How big?
Just wanted to tell you guys that this feature is of great help to me as I have a slow connection. I have installed it and now my blog loads faster. What a relief!
Why’s it called gears?
Should help as I plan on starting to add a fair bit of new media soon. Sounds good anyway. Thanks, Kaspar
fi: The files are very small.
this is an awesome feature. wordpress rules!
very cool , Thanx
I haven’t yet noticed a difference, though I’m sure on a slow internet day it will come in handy.

Susan in Italy ;;_))
another cool feature.. I’ll try it…
thanks anyway.. 😀
Thanks for your hard work, I appreciate gears immensely
i’m trying it now! i can’t comment for now, but i’ll be back to give my judgment.

I am Just a few day old Baby out here. New to Bloging too. But its Great fun being on WP.
The customisable theames, grears, the dashboard options are just great. Providing http links was exactly what I was looking at, and its here.
Thanks Word Press…
great idea; waiting for the thing to work on wp.org. all the best, wmb
cool
Thanks for the turbo. Would like to write a post offline .. Would be a cool feature.
Sound great, thank for the info ye… I’ll try it.
Great stuff!!!
I understand how useful this will be…unfortunately I cant get Google Gears for OpenSolaris (Hint hint Google) so it’ll only be good for my laptop.
I think I can now safely say that WordPress is the best blogging platform…keep up the fantastic work you guys have put in.
Hmmm…as described, this appears to be the same thing as browser caching. Firefox already caches images, css and script files, right? How is this different than that?
Great!!
Thanks you 😉
200 files, but how large is the download?
I have a pretty nice machine and I use 64bit Ubuntu, so fast is not an issue for me.
Also, if anyone decides that Gears is not for them, try the ScribeFire extension for Firefox3. I’m digging it immensely.
Great idea though guys; prefetching and caching definitely speed things up. I might give it a try anyway.
nice
SWEET
nice
thank you!!! 😉
Great new plugin and great article. I am interested in adding a cache plugin and wondering if they can work together or are they over redundant ??
thanks again.
