Today’s post is dedicated to Chuck Norris: the man, the myth, the legend, and the star in our demo of a brand-new feature: Blavatars.
“What-atars?” you say. Blavatars! Blog + avatars.
As the incomparable Nikolay explains in the video below, your blavatar automatically becomes your favicon: the little icon that displays next to your blog’s URL in a browser’s web address bar. It’ll also show up next to your pingbacks in the comments section of other blogs.
To get a blavatar for your blog, just go to Settings in your dashboard and upload an image as your Blog Picture. After you upload, you can crop as you like. Save and you’re all set.
Blavatar – sounds like an arch enemy of Speed Racer.
thank you, nice work
IF–I ONLY KNEW IF A BLAVATAR WAS RIGHT OR WRONG!
IF LOVIN’ YOU IS WRONG WP– I DON ‘T WANNA BE RIGHT! WINK1
Good job! Thanks.
wow great!!! awesome
Something for me to play around in GIMP again. Very simple but good change to have.
Blavatar… interesting word to coin there.
It won’t let me crop for some reason. Very frustrating.
Please contact Support with any issues relating to your Blavatar.
So I went and got my “blavatar” and I was just wondering if it would show in comments like this one…
OMG i got my so called “Blavatar” centuries ago hahaha… thanks anyway wordpress hot girl!
Blavatars and avatars aren’t the same. Please see my comment above for an explanation of the differences between the two. Also: you’re welcome 🙂
Thanks for sharing the link. This one is great and awesome.
Wasn’t there always these?
Nope, brand new! Please see my comment above for an explanation of the differences between blavatars and avatars.
This is absolutely awesome!! I want to have my own favicon forever and you just made my dream comes true! You guys are the best!
Thank’s. Now i have a favicon 😆
Sweet.
Very cool! I love these neat little details.
I don’t understand what’s different from just having an avatar.
Please see my comment above for an explanation of the differences between blavatars and avatars.
How great if I could watch the movie! Unfortunately, my ADSL is too slow. Any time you present a new feature, a text explanation would be much appreciated
A great suggestion. We’ll do this going forward.
Lessee if this works.
You guys surely know how to please us. Thanks to you, guys…!!! 😀
No, wait, now I’m actually confused… isn’t this the same image you upload as “my picture” which says it’s your avatar under “users”? and if they’re not the same, which one rules over the other? and when does the favicon become active??? Does the favicon work with normal pictures?
Blavatars and avatars are not the same. Your avatar appears with comments and in the Authors widget and is uploaded under My Account > Edit Profile. Blavatars appears as your favicon and in pingbacks. Images uploaded should appear right away. If they don’t, contact support.
nice feature. But since the Favicon is restricted in the display size, would like to have a different image for my favicon as compared to the images in comments on profile !
Looks good!
Sweet! Finally a favicon for my wordpress blog 😀
OH god this so so cool.
This is so cool. Now I can really feel like I have a site of my own! Thanks a lot!
This is great and if i can make one of my own is better.
Oh, please invent something else new so I can hear that man chat about it. What a cool voice! 😀
Just checking this out to see if the image shows up.
Wendy
This is cool, I like the feature.
ThanksThanks for adding this feature.!
ok
i am trying now…..
Oh life and blogging can be so colorful… Simply had to try it..
eventually wordpress will become the greatest blogging service ever. Keep it up guys
(next maybe support some “alternative” to java/flash/iframes/marquee – been hunting for these for a while)
thank you! this is a nifty feature – very streamlined and competitive with other free blog spaces, like Tumblr.
thank’s
my blavatar is looking good. 🙂
Blavatar. This word sounds like some sort of dwarven battle cry. Brilliant coinage.
Can you tell me what the actual cropped size of a blavatar is, please? A resize function would be good (if the image was square), but failing that I’d prefer to resize an image in Photoshop, as a crop won’t give me the result I want. Thanks. Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing – I’m not going to wind up with a 4GB, postage-stamp sized image!
Sure. Blavatars are 128px × 128px.
I thought it had to do with an image in motion…
😦
That’s interesting, but I agree with Tristan Strangebrew. Couldn’t you have found a non-bigot to use as your example?
OK – solved my problem and created my blavatar. Hasn’t appeared yet, but I live in hope – I really must get out more!
People, there are people out there! It’s nice to see faces.
Cool another way to smear the web with clichés.
Whoa, this is getting better and better, oh man, I’ve been waiting for this forever! oh, and something something Heather is great, blah blah
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!
Word.
Solid.
Cool, but I think it should be two images. One for the favicon and other to the avatar.
I, too, am having difficulties with it letting me crop. The crop box stays up at the very top of the screen and won’t move down over top of the picture. 😦
What was that? A memorial to Chuck Norris? Swayze pwnd Norris like a year ago. The Swayze (AKA Captain Planet) has taken over as the true leader of world awesomeness!
YEEHAW! Favicons!
Hmm I uploaded a 16×16 pix 24-bit png with transparency and the semi-transparent area is simply missing (transparent). Still, it’s better than nothing. 😛
Transparent images won’t work as Blavatars. Try again without alpha 🙂
Perfect idea !!!! Thanks
Sweet. I didn’t know there were a name for blog avatars. Sweeett.
I guess we need the word Twitvatars also.
I AM CHUCK NORRIS so I can’t say cool but I will stare for a bit.
what a funny/interesting voice/accent !
Go Blavatar!
Really smooth roll-out, I must say! The Blavatar loaded cleanly and shows up everywhere I post or comment. Great job.
ok lets do it!
And my Blavatar it’s a Smiling Devil! And my blog talk about a girl and she’s voodoo Doll
Totaly Non sense…
thank you – good job! we’ll try it out.
Impressive! Thanks guys….again.
I like it! Thanks for adding this.
Ohhh my god. You don’t know how I was waiting that to come. Thanks WordPress!! You Rock!!
Nice work. 🙂
Sweet, thanks for this WordPress!
innovations like these is what keeps me with wp, keep them up!
i added a blavatar of me on my blog
excellent choice of a word!!! It’s got my vote for Webster’s 09′ dictionary!
Wouldn’t it have been more efficient to explain the distinction between gravatars and blavatars in the post itself, rather than in comments? You could also have explained why you decided to make people upload their images over again rather than simply applying prexisting avatars to pingbacks and favicons; probably technical, probably boring, but I can’t be the only one who’s curious. And (optionally) who decided that ‘blavatar’ was a good name and what they were smoking beforehand. It’s like you want me to write a post called ‘blahvatars’.
very nice! cool to see tweaks and changes in the wild.
that looks AWESOME!! i am soo getting it! Thank you wordpress your so cool!
This is great stuff. Just wanted to say thanks for listening to the peeps; I myself was one who screamed for this feature. This is really going to change WordPress. I can’t wait to see my favourite blogs showing up with proper favicons now. 🙂
P.S.
Eliminating the transparency did the trick, though it would have been nice to have alpha in the favicon. Nevertheless, I’m delighted. 🙂
Hm, now I understud.
Ultra cool….Wordpress you ROCK!!
This is so special to me. I was thinking of getting a domain space up and host my own site, primarily to have a custom favicon, instead of domain mapping. Ownage, WordPress…
As soon as I uploaded the image and cropped it, it said upload was successful and the favicon would be appearing soon. An idea how long does it take to take effect?
It may take several minutes for your favicon to change. If it’s been more than that, try clearing your cache and cookies. If that doesn’t help, please contact Support.
Amazing!! that was one thing which added more fun, frolic and color to blogging! 🙂
thanks for the blavatars, but chuck norris? really? i thought he and mike huckabee ran away together, never to bother us again. 😉
Nice work, thank you for adding this feature!
Nice. Looking forward to see my new Blavatar on this page. 😉
I love you wordpress. This is just another reason why I’d like you to have my babies.
who the bleep is chuck norris? has this person just died?
and what’s the diff between an avitar and the blar one?!
grrrr!
May I suggest consulting this Chuck Norris Wikipedia entry. Avatars display next to comments and in the Authors widget. Blavatars display as your favicon and next to pingbacks.
Now that i see the video i start to think that is not the same thing i imagine. I imagine an image that i can put in my blog to people who aswer my questions in blog without a graphic image…
Oh well
Maybe another time… 😉
HI THERE! WHY IT’S TRUE THAT I APPRECIATE BLAVATARS ON MY SCREEN HOWEVER, I WOULD WANT TO SEE MORE WELL-DESIGN ONE FOR THE BLOG. IF SAYING IT IS WRONG THEN FORGIVE ME.
Awesome!
o.O
Hm… It’s a Great thing. I’ll hame my own favicon and my identity 🙂
Cool )
Neat 🙂
Is it a blog+avatar or blah-blah+avatar = blavatar? 🙂
I’ve wanted a favicon forever. Thank you! 🙂
