Note: This post is a bit old and includes outdated instructions. Make it snow on your site by following these up-to-date instructions.
It’s 43 degrees outside, which is I think as cold as it gets in San Francisco. But there’s no reason we can’t turn down the thermometer here on WordPress.com.
That’s right, the snow is back!
Last year we were a little tardy with adding it so to make up we’re giving you almost a full month of snowy goodness.
How to make it rain snow?
- Go to your dashboard.
- Navigate to Appearance -> Extras.
- Check the box next to “Show falling snow on this blog.”
- Roast some chestnuts.
Oh the weather outside is frightful,
but this blog is sooo delightful
Until the internet gets slow,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
Those of you who turned on snow on last year will get it automatically. If you want to turn it off just do the steps above but uncheck the box.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays!
I HATE HATE HATE HATE the snow.
Seriously shoddy programming. It practically destroys the ability of anyone attempting on a comment that turns this idiotic feature on. Just try entering a comment on a blog that has this crap turned on.
Shoot the snow in the head and never ever bring it back. Better yet, shoot the programmer in the head for putting out such a performance pig.
It totally sucks.
Woo that rox thx dude!!
Fantastic, will there be falling leaves on autumn too? 😀
Thanks a lot, on Hemmingway theme it looks awesome! We love it and looking forward to confetti! Djdeutschland
I was like “huh?!” when I saw the snow… It’s sunny and hot here in Perth, Western Australia. But that’s Christmas in summer for ya! You guys should try it sometime!
Pretty cool, I must say!
Oh good Lord.
It is suppose to snow in NY pretty soon.
LOL… i was shocked when i read the title at first.. 43degree and it snows.. god must be crazy i guess.. LOL
I’ve only had my WordPress blog for a little while, so i didnt have to see the snow before. Positively wonderful coding. Good work, everyone.
-0.9°C (30°F i guess) outside and snowing, welcome to my world.
Looking forward to shovel tomorrow morning. 😦
I love the snow. It’s great. It even shifts direction as the wind blows. Any chance it could pile up a bit more at the bottom. Kids are hoping for a snow day……
It makes me feel cozy staring at my computer screen. Thanks Matt.
Oh, that is supposed to be “Snow” aye!!??
I thought since there was a meteor shower about this time of you that somebody was trying to mimic the shooting stars!
wow, it’s a wonderfull. thank’s for the info.. GBU..
i thought my eyes were playing tricks when i saw white bits flying across the screen. i’d even tried to clean my screen.
it’s a neat extra! especially given how it’s summer where i am.
[lol, for a split second
I thought my monitor
was breaking, kool
effect though]
Cool! I love the new snow, especially the way it gathers on the bottom then leaves a dusty trail when you slow down 😛 Good job!!
It would be cool if you could change weather settings on your blog all of the time. Like make it snow all of the time, or rain, or tornado’s or hurricanes or Leaves falling down! Rain would be awesome though! But this is great for now!
Wallybob
Kudos to WP!!!
I love the snow~~ 😀
Fantastic! I love it! Merry Christmas!
simply marvellous.. awesome!
simply awesome!
Oh great it’s back! 🙂 i love that feature.
It’s what I’m looking for….
I saw the snow fall in wordpress.com pages
I haven’t yet touch it but I want it fall in my blog 🙂
Thank you… It’s very beautiful, I like it…
it is so wonderful
thanks a lot Matt
i never thinking in Malaysia will SNOW
^^~
this is useless
Yay, snow! Thank you.
I love this feature, it is so cool!!
Suggestion: These flakes do not show up well for those of us with white background templates. I think if the snowflakes were just a bit larger and snowed more frequent/faster speed it would help be seen on our photos / videos. It would definitely help if they had a very faint grey outline to accentuate them.
Thanks for being so creative!
This snow script ruins the whole Christmas charm >_<
It loads the cpu up to 100%. Found out in each browser (Linux/Windows; Firefox, Opera, IE, Konqueror).
20:47:28 up 1 day, 5:55, 1 users, load average: 2.86, 2.24, 2.02
oO
The snow script was recently updated so that it no longer runs on inactive windows, and some updates were also made for better performance. Hope this helps!
Fantabulous. It even works on iPhone/iTouch (but it’s laggy). I love this. Happy Christmakah people.
Its amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot!!!
Merry christmas & Happy new year folks..
From Barcelona, although it is cold here for us, thank you for the snow! We´ve been whithout for a few years now!
Wonderful:)
nice idea wordpress !
Merry Christmas and happy holidays
Love it! Thank you! 😀
To the guy who said it was laggy on the iPhone: you know why the feature is laggy on it? Because it has the worse performance I ever thought a “professional” programmer could produce. It should be fixed, either diminishing the amount of processing necessary to enable this effect or adding a manner for users to disable it while they’re viewing a blog. Any chosen way would really be a performance boost.
As for now, I’m with the guy who says he hates it.
Keep in mind that you can turn off the snow for your own blog in your blog’s Appearance > Extras page. And, we have made a note about your suggestion to opt out of all snow. Thanks for the feedback. 🙂
The snow is lovely, and, I must say, excellent Youtube video choices! Finally, I’m starting to feel a little festive. 🙂
Thanks a lot! I love it! =D
