When we sat down at an Austin cafe in 2005 and wrote the stats system, Matt and I had no idea what we were getting into. He created the databases and drew the little smiley face while I wrote the code. We had milk and cookies. It was really cute. We were naïve!
I swear it was Matt’s idea to store stats data as daily summaries in Universal Coordinated Time (UTC), which is why stats days have always ended at odd hours for non-Greenwichians. But even if I seem blameless, I failed to champion your cause soon enough. It is even more my fault than Matt’s.
And so today I present a gift. If you have set your blog’s time zone, your stats reports will honor that setting (in whole hours from -12 to +14). This upgrade is retroactive to the beginning of 2009. It affects all blogs using WordPress.com stats, even self-hosted blogs using the Stats plugin (version 1.4).
The best part is that any time you change your blog’s time zone, the stats reports change retroactively. This works because now we store data by the hour instead of by the day. I’ve written lots of new code and Barry is bringing many new systems online to cope with the additional data, and we do it all just to give you stats in your time zone. We really do like you.
Man oh man, that’s been bugging me. I just happened to notice my stats at 7:00pm today and they were still climbing and then noticed this notice later.
Thanks guys, good on ya.
Cheers,
Maggie
Wow, good work wordpress
interesting to see, someone new from australia
Okay, now I can explain mysefl why my stats changed in a night.
Thank you for this! Now I just have to reset my thinking, which is stuck on converting from GMT to where I am. 🙂 If only overcoming the Fahrenheit/Celsius challenge were as easy!
thank you! 🙂
Oh, man. I had JUST adjusted to the day switching in the middle of the afternoon! Ah, well, these are the things to which one must adapt in blogworld. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the change; I totally get a charge out of watching the general upward trend in my blog and now I can watch it in my own timezone. 🙂
I really appreciate all the hard work so many people have put into WordPress. I love, love, love, love it. It made starting my first blog so easy that I had to start another one, and I love that widgets are so easy to find and install. When I put the current weather on my blog, I felt like I had conquered a new world.
Pam
Oh, and here I thought I was headed for a blockbuster stats day…oh well. 🙂
Wonderful! As a new WP’er (is that the correct way to state that?!?), I was initially confused, but now I am enlightened! Now if my blog could just hit double digits!
Very nice gift, thanks for really liking us 🙂
PS: since I’m here… do you have any idea why related posts don’t appear at the end of my posts? … I didn’t turn off the option. Does this mean my post don’t show up as related posts elsewhere either? Hmmm…
Hard to tell without looking at the post. If you want someone to investigate, you should use the WordPress.com contact form. 🙂
cool! 😀
Excellent. Although it means when I looked at my daily figure just before, and looked like it was going to be a really good day, I was still expecting a bunch of US hits overnight till 10am tomorrow. Dang! (Not WP fault – Im just so used to the counter clicking over the following morning!)
Can I request one thing though – now you are doing stats on an hourly basis (as mentioned), could we see that graphed when we click on the single day’s data – I’d love to see the hour by hour breakdown. It would help in seeing how long after a post (or a video particularly), any spike is generated. Also, to see what timezones are contributing to the overall site’s statistics. It would only be a rough indication, but it would give me an idea how much of a US vs an Oz following there is.
If we could actually get that data another way with WP, that’d be cool too!
No – we are never content – we ALWAYS want more More MORE!!!!
Cheers guys and gals. Appreciate all the work. Looking forward to more stats features 🙂
Thats so cool! Keep up the good work.
It’s only naive if you drink milk from a sippy cup…
Not such a big change for me here (the new day started when I was snuzing usually) but thanks for the effort to get it all working
I hope some of the Flickr techies happens to visit this tread , and do the same for stats over there .
A kind gesture , thank you 🙂
Marcelo
oh! that was a very sweet story and it’s very nice of you that you changed the stats data system. I’m so happy I chose wordpress to make my blog!
Yes and we really like YOU GUYS!
Thanks.
THANK YOU!!!! I have always had the oddest time figureing this out!
Wow, thanks, I started a few months ago, and began getting used to the fact that my day ended at 5, haha, took me aback this morning when today’s stats dropped by quite a bit,
thanks :]
I was wondering what happened…
Awesome, still looking e-commerce feature.
So that’s what UTC is. Math and science are hard. You are smart.
Thanks for that
Finally!
amazing
Like some others, I thought there was something odd with the numbers. Now I know that it’s because of the changes. I appreciate the improvement. Keep it up.
Thanks!
perfect
It’s pretty nice!
Awesome, awesome, awesome; thanks!
Good News, Thanks!
Thanks a great deal!!!
That’s indeed great news!!!
The biggest yes I have ever given.
I really like this! Having to figure a day from 5:00 pm to 5:00 pm seemed rather silly and awkard. I assume we are now at midnight? I can see one or two little bugs, but I have 100% confidence that it will all come together!
Thanks. Nice touch and I am sure a lot of hard work on your parts!
Excellent work. Now, all we have to do is fix up those pesky half-time zones like, oh, Australia for one. 😉
Bill
An exquisite change. Thank you!
It is my opinion that milk and cookies always portends good things.
It is progress however I noticed the graph reset at midnight (+7 hours) and my blog stats “stuck” at the same number of hits while my referrers and top posts have continued to climb for the new day. In other word, the hits are now out of synchronicity. Solution? Thanks, Leo
Please contact support directly.
Yey, I’ve noticed that earlier, how it would start a new day before “my” day wasn’t over yet. Thank you endlessly for making this upgrade! 😀
I’m hopeless with numbers so I’ll just pretend I understand what just happened and thank you for it. I’ve been really impressed with the great service and community around here since moving my blog to WP from another place…
i’ve just join
this is great! thanks!
Any idea when stats will be working right again?
They should be working. Please contact WordPress.com support if you are having trouble.
awesome :>
Even i do not know what it mean, but thanks also 🙂
This is the balls. Way to go WordPress dudes.
Fantastic work. Thanks from downunder
Really, really thank you from Brasil!
nice 🙂
YEA!!! Thank you!!
Excellent ! Have been wearying my right-brain trying to sort through all those numbers… nevermore !!!
I was so confused until now! Thanks so much! Now I want a cookie…
Excellent, that has been bugging me for the longest time!
I wondered what happened. My day doesn’t start at 7pm anymore. Good job!
Thanks for all you do! I might just go over the 100,000 mark next week. All because you guys rock!
This must have been really scary to implement judging by the time it took ever since the novelty was first announced.
Chapeau!
I like it! Thanks a lot 🙂
At the risk of redundancy with all these other comments – thanks! This is great!
Great work, effort and spirit! Now comes the demand list – I am not gonna let you till you people start giving stats of the wordpress.com hosted blogs like google analytics provides. Hope some solution work out for eg.-Like in Blog.co.in they provide option for filling google account no. to get your detailed stats. In the end I will add whatever suits wp.com interests best I am going with that.
Thanks for great stat job…!
The changes to the stats don’t make a lot of difference to us here in the UK! All it means is that while we are in BST the times for midnight to 1.00 am are added to the current day instead of the previous day, but I do appreciate what a difference it must make to those in other time zones.
It would have been nice, however, to be able to download the raw base details.
Awesome! This will make WordPress even better!
I better go check this out.
Thank’s for your information.
Excellent! Thanks guys!
very nice. smart idea. viva wordpress.
Awesome!Thank a lot once more!
Wordpress Rocks!
[awesome, although I’m in London so my stats
have always changed at midnight, or 1am
depending on what time of the year it is]
Erm but some time zones aren’t even hours some are offset with odd half hours.
Thanks:]
Fantastic. This has been sort of distracting and sometimes infuriating in the past. My sanity has been restored, and that is a very wonderful gift on this mother’s day…
Excellent! Great job!
Thanks!! This is fantastic! It’s one more reason to keep my blog here.
Yeah Thank You…
I felt that yesterday….
🙂
Well, thank you.
great job. this is cool!
Thanks WordPress – way to stay on top of consumer demand!
This makes a lot of sense. Thanks for explaining why my stats have been acting all funky…
Thank’s Andy. I was actually wondering yesterday what’s wrong with my stats.
Awesome! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
I’m happy you made this happen. Thank you so much. When it first appeared, I thought it was because we switched ISPs, but that wasn’t it at all. I like what you’ve done, and encourage you to keep up the good work.
Nice! I Luv the Pic ^,^
WordPress, I love you. Sigh.
I am thrilled! I really hated the fact that the stats counter was off to a new day when I wasn’t even close to finishing my day. That’s no way to run a relationship and we were drifting apart. Now we can live happily ever after. THANK YOU.
Hey, that’s cool.
Fantastic news, that’ll help tracing whats really going on with the blog. Thanks.
I was wondering how my stats evened out…
It now makes perfect sense!
Thanks for doing this wordpress guys!
You guys rock!!!
I’m confused. The last 2 nights my stats stop counting at midnight- nothing at all till 8 hours later which used to be my local ‘new day/start’ time — Why does all counting now stop for 8 hours? (This has always been one of the busiest times on my blog for stats ticking.)
erp.. must still be some hiccups in the system, my stats have stubbornly remained at zero for the last four hours! I’m sure it’ll turn out all right eventually! I must congratulate you on the fantastic stats – it’s always a boost to know someone’s reading what I write!!
So is that why my blog automatically goes to the next day at exactly 8:00 P.M. everyday faithfully? I mean it could be May 5th 2009 and at 8:00 P.M. everyday it will then be May 6th 2009…but the time wouldn’t change…if that’s what you mean then that is very annoying.
That’s not what we mean.
Thanks. And I have a question with which perhaps someone can help…. How is it that for months I will get over a thousand visits a day and then it will drop significantly to about 400 – 500 per day for a few months and then proceed to build up again? This baffles me. Please help.
OMG!! Finally!! i am about to cry…
good…!
I KEEP RE-SETTING MY PAGE UNTIL I SEEN WHAT YOU DID! THANKS FOR THE HEADS-UP I CAN RELAX NOW!
waooow… so sweet…
great update. it is nice who is traveling around the world.
Great update. WordPress do love all of us!!
this is great! thanks
