When we sat down at an Austin cafe in 2005 and wrote the stats system, Matt and I had no idea what we were getting into. He created the databases and drew the little smiley face while I wrote the code. We had milk and cookies. It was really cute. We were naïve!
I swear it was Matt’s idea to store stats data as daily summaries in Universal Coordinated Time (UTC), which is why stats days have always ended at odd hours for non-Greenwichians. But even if I seem blameless, I failed to champion your cause soon enough. It is even more my fault than Matt’s.
And so today I present a gift. If you have set your blog’s time zone, your stats reports will honor that setting (in whole hours from -12 to +14). This upgrade is retroactive to the beginning of 2009. It affects all blogs using WordPress.com stats, even self-hosted blogs using the Stats plugin (version 1.4).
The best part is that any time you change your blog’s time zone, the stats reports change retroactively. This works because now we store data by the hour instead of by the day. I’ve written lots of new code and Barry is bringing many new systems online to cope with the additional data, and we do it all just to give you stats in your time zone. We really do like you.
Thank you! I love the stats pages – it is always such a nice feel-good, gooshy feeling knowing that there are people actually reading the posts I write.
good work………..
i love wordpress
Fantastic! I definitely appreciate the more real time approach this gives.
Thanks!
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! I’ve always been confused as to why the time for stats was not the same time that my blog is set to. Even if there are a few bugs, the end result will be worth it. Thanks again. God bless.
Yay!
Sheri (and WP staff), you may want to add the name of the person you reply to here while writing your comment. That way it will become easier to follow it in the mailbox!
@Vikas Gupta, okay, but if we forget then just open the link and the reply should be right next to the comment we are replying to. 🙂
great addition -keep coming up with such gifts: m luvin’ em! 🙂
Yeah Sheri,
Thank you for the quick response! 😀
You may even ignore typing ‘@’ and simply write Vikas to save one keystroke!
This is ver good. Big thank you from Australia.
Gr8! thanks a lot for this =D
I sure do thank you all for this very special feature gift. I think it’s all working, but I don’t understand what you mean by saying it’s “in whole hours from -12 to +14”. Is that a typo, or do I need to crack open some old text book so I’ll know how to interpret the stats page?
That’s great. Thank you!
You’re my hero! Thank you thank you thank you!
What about unusual time zones, like that of India (+5,5) and Nepal (+5,45)? Not to mention the Chatham Islands off the coast of New Zealand (+12,45)!!
thanks!
This is amazing !!!
I was always sad that my stats reset @ 8pm
This is great because I really don’t get the whole UTC. I finally figured out how to set the time correctly on my blog.
Thanks for the fix, another improvement!
A big thanks from Kuwait, where my stats used to run 0300 – 0300. This makes more sense, and it was a lot of work for you. We don’t take you for granted. Thank you for caring about your customers. 🙂
Thank you from New Zealand where we are always about half a day +/- an hour or two depending on daylight saving here and there) ahead of GMT.
You guys rock. Where do I send a donation, this is very welcome.
We don’t take donations per se, but you can buy an upgrade on your blog and that makes us happy.
totally helpful! thanks!
Great … yet one hitch: the stat results do not seem to kick in on the graph until about midday my time. Any ideas?
Hi! Thanks so much! You continue to surprise us by coming up with things we don’t even know we need! The key to successful inventions!
Thank you so much, thats so great post!!
Sweet baby Jesus! That’s good to hear. It was bugging me that it was on Greenwich time.
Thanks!
I have to put the UTC on -4 for it to be right when its supposed to be on UTC -5. I’m in Cleveland Ohio and that’s what its supposed to be on. So am I wrong or is WordPress wrong? Being that my blog jumps to the next day at 8:00 P.M. everyday I would think WordPress is wrong. Still WordPress is great all in all.
Amazing! Thank you!
about frakking time, Andy! Nah, just kidding. It was a small annoyance, and the fact that you made the change retroactive is stellar. Gold Stars! Godspeedyouwordpressencoder!!!
Yes, finally… I love that wordpress is really working on things now… before it was like nothing was ever being fixed, and now it’s like people are actually working on it…
thanks, please keep up the good work.
Maybe this explains why my stats counter for today, May 11, shows 4,886 page views, but the separate Blog Stats section of my stats page shows that yesterday, May 10, I had 4,892 page views and today I have none. Very confusing.
Okay.. When I didn’t knew about this yet (a day or two ago), I was like WHY DO I HAVE ONLY TEN VISITORS THE WHOLE DAY, when I looked up the WP Stats plugin installed on my self-hosted blog. Now I know..
It needs a little time for me to get used to this. But, nah, I can sleep now at midnight, instead of waiting for the stats to update in the morning :p

sweet. ^^
Awesome!!
Hi Matt. Nice 2 know u, a man with a great idea. goodluck n Gbu. (from papua indonesia)
Just one more voice saying “THANK YOU”. You guys really deserve the milk and cookies but I hear beer does wonders for the spirits :}
Hey just a quick question…..is DLS time changes taken into account?
Not yet implemented, but possibly before the next change.
Why just whole hours??
I am in time zone +5(1/2) India!
It helps but not everyone, right?
Is it that difficult to change a code to include half hourly quantas?
You are now only 30 minutes off instead of 330, which is very helpful. It would take a lot more work and additional variable costs to change the system to keep two records every hour instead of one. We don’t plan on moving to half hours.
Thanks, it feels good to be liked!
Important update. No more manual abck calculations for me. Thanks guys!
Thank you so much for this!
Thank yoooou! I’ve been waiting for this. 🙂
Cool..n Thanks really…
Fantastic! Thank you.
Long overdue, so thanks!
Ah, I knew someone would have asked the +5.30 India time question before me. Aditya (https://wordpress.com/blog/2009/05/08/stats-in-your-time-zone/comment-page-3/#comment-66447), I believe our great nation is one of the few in the world to have chosen a half-hour time difference from Greenwich as its national time. Perhaps we should ask the Government to change the system, not WP 🙂
WP– I presume Indian-timezone blogs will follow UTC +5, not +6?
Nice. -_-
Ohh nice… Arigato!
This is great. UTC works for me, because I’m out of town for months at a time. But for others, local time has got to be better.
Nice, really like it!, wasn’t a big problem for me though, but it’s way better.
T.H.A.N.K. Y.O.U. *sigh*
Very good news, here in Peru statistics began at 7 pm, is now much better
thanks
Fast Gold
That’s really cool! Normally the WordPress day ended at 6PM, that is, the stats were collected. This week has been really weird because I noticed the times were off, thanks for letting us know about this!
Cool 😀
Thanks! A big help.
Thank you! Awesome work. 🙂
Time is an illusion anyway but at least now my stats make more sense. Thanks!
THANK YOU! Much needed!
THANK YOU!! LOVE YOU GUYS!!
GREAT!!!
Oh thank you, thank you!
Presumably the superb new graphical display that I encountered this morning is part of the roll-out. It’s great having the date as well as the view count. Thank you WordPress.
Absolutely LOVE it. From Malaysia!
Thank you. I appreciate your doing that. It makes things much clearer.
Aww, thanks guys. I like the nifty little bubbly goodness of it too.
Ohhh, I had missed this entry. It’s AMAZING. Finally, stats are fixed. Damn you, hehehe.
Thx, keep working. I love to read this..
i totally admire what you guys have done for us. thanks in advance! *hug*
I’ve been waiting for this! Thank you so much….
YES! This is great! Thank you so much.
Now all we need is feed stats and WordPress will do everything I want it to do.
wow! this iss gr8.. but the stats take a long time to load now. more than the usual. is it because of the time zone thing?
i am in GMT+5.5 hrs zone (indian time), what abt me? so i have to choose either pakistan or bangladesh zone for whole hours?
I’m sorry, but we don’t plan on moving to half hours. To do that, we would need to change the system to keep two records every hour instead of one. Unfortunately, yes, you will need to choose one or the other. Good news is you’re now only 30 minutes off instead of 330!
Very nice! Thanks! And you must have done something else cool, because now the chart doesn’t run off the edge on my laptop. And it’s much easier to read! I’m happy!
Thank you so much! It confused me a bit at first when in the middle of the afternoon my new “day” began. I appreciate your hard work.
Thank you 🙂 We appreciate your updates!
Yay! That was always so confusing/frustrating. And for someone borderline obsessive about stats, I definitely appreciate it 🙂 Thanks!
@hubman38 I noticed this as well. Is one of the charts still on GMT, and the other changed to your local time, perhaps? If not, I dunno *what* is going on!
thanks guys. this is awesome and more accurate than ever. appreciate the hard work!
Just exactly what I expected from WP. Very nice! Thanks!
Thank you ever so kindly… ;D
Thank you. I love it!
GreaT!!! Finally…
I think it’s a lovely gift from wp. I always did feel a bit disoriented with the other system. Thanks.
newbie here
but that is too cool
thanks
whoa that’s cool 🙂
i like it!!
I’m in France, an hour difference. Still off an hour.
Also, does that mean that all the time zone things are fixed? For instance, if I bump an important post back to the top of the blog, I have to add or subtract hours according to Greenwich meantime, depending where I am in the world. If not, it will disappear as a “scheduled” post until the time comes up. Just what I didn’t want.
You should double-check that your timezone is set correctly in “settings” and if it still causes you problems then contact support.
Luvin’ the “non-Greenwichian” term… and feature… uhmmm.
Stats? Who worries about stats? 😉
Shame I’m already a Greenwhichian… oh well, it is good for those elsewhere than that wonderful strip of the Earth
Hooah!
thank you .
