I’ve seen my fair share of snow growing up in northern Michigan. The sun was shining today, but there is a good chance we’ll have snow on the ground by the end of the week. My favorite things about snow have always been making snowmen, building snow forts, and having snowball fights.
Many of you don’t get a chance to experience the fluffy white stuff, so we’re bringing snow to WordPress.com like we’ve done the last two years. What do you like about snow?
To make it snow on your blog:
- Go to your dashboard.
- Navigate to Appearance -> Extras.
- Check the box next to “Show falling snow on this blog.”
If you used snow last year it is automatically turned back on. If you want to turn it off, follow the steps above but uncheck the box.
Older computers may run slow or stop responding due to snow. Use the following links if you run into a problem (the options below only affect your user account):
I like this effect.
I love this feature! It was so much fun last year, and I’m thrilled it automatically returned. I noticed yesterday that it had suddenly started “Snowing”. This is especially lovely timing for my Christmas and holiday posts. Thanks again!
Thank you WordPress! I love you more! I’ve been jealous about the “falling snow” in my friends’ blogger blogs for days now..
thanks, i’ll have to make sure my visitors brings a shovel.
I have a snow blower to help clean up real snow, and don’t want to clean up this WP snow….. What’s nice with WordPress snow is that you can “control the weather” if you wish….. It must be a still day, because the snow comes straight down gently….. Very nice.
How festive is that! Simple pleasure, thanks. Perfect timing.
I spoke too soon….. This crazy WordPress snow goes whereever you point your cursor.
I liked having this feature last year! 🙂
Yea, It’s Snowing!!!
I was very happy to see the snow return! I had forgotten about it from last year. It is so much fun, thank you!
Thanks! I always look forward to this addition to my blog at the holidays!
i love it
I love the snow; thanks for bringing it back 🙂
I’ve seen the snow before and thought I was seeing spots on my monitor.
Thanks for clearing that up! 😉
Thank you – this is wonderful 😀
fantastic… I’ll add the snow in a couple of seconds…
Hey Guys…..

This is great! I recently moved to Michigan and have been waiting patiently for snow (still waiting) – but now at least I can have it on my blog! This is a really fun feature – thanks so much!
cool! 😀
Nick: I’m sitting here half an hour below the Bridge and the last thing I need is snow on my blog, too. We’ve got a chance of up to a foot by Saturday night. http://www.accuweather.com/watches-warnings.asp?partner=forecastfox&zipcode=49706&county=MIc047&zone=MIz016&metric=0 I live a mile from the state highway mentioned in the warning.
I’ll let others have the blessing of cyber snow. 🙂
Love the snow. Had it last year, had wandered around looking for it this year, checking the forums and such. Then suddenly, a couple of days ago, I detected a chilly feeling about my computer, and when I opened to my page which I had already converted to a Christmas theme, there was a languid drift of snow moving over my screen.
Fun. Thank you.
This effect just makes me feel the festive time is here ! thank you for boosting the good feeling you are trigerring with just a bit of coding. Living away from home, my immediate environment does not allow any scope of seeing snow. So, this effect is bang on !
Here in Florida wordpress is providing the impossible…
let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…

YESSS!!! And keep it going all winter, please. Merry Christmas from Ralph!

It’s like real :)))
Sorry, I didn’t make myself clear – I know the snow is only available until 4th January 2010 – what I meant to was that all year round, I look forward to WordPress switching on the snow option for us. Thanks guys.
How nice! Thank you so much. Living in sunny Southern California, snow isn’t part of a typical winter for me. It’s nice to have it on my blog though, adds a little something to my downtown LA header.
nicee………
thanks
Thank you for the snow! Makes me happy.
Thank you!
When it snows in my country, it will mean that the climate has gone awry.
Fantastic!!! Love snow but don’t see too much of it here.
Haha!! I love it!
Thank You.
I noticed that you use the variable setting ?holidaysun= to control whether it is sunny or snowing, but this obviously only works when the user viewing my blog has a WordPress account and is signed in.
Is there a way to provide an option to turn the snow off/on for my blog readers who do not have a WordPress account?
Thanks!
(I love the snow. I’m just not sure that all of my blog readers will.)
Correct. The disable only works for WordPress.com accounts.
Please, please make this available as a down-loadable plugin. There are plugins out there, but they don’t work as well as the one you guys built.
We used this script. We only modified settings. http://www.schillmania.com/projects/snowstorm/
sweet. merry christmas wordpress buddies!
Thanks for the snow. ¡Es gratificante!
This sooooo cool!
The chances of having a white christmas have just risen. Leaves in Autumn next?
How lovely, the whole screen is full of snow. Thank you, cause here in Ermionida Greece it never snow.
Great text, i love snow
I’m in Cleveland, Ohio and its so nice out this morning, I had to cut off the heat and open the window to try and get a breeze…that failed. I’ve been waiting on Snow since October, lol.
I really like this….
and if you get to embed a YouTube video on your WordPress blog…
and do a right-click on it,
suddenly… ( well, I’ll let you figure this one out for yourselves )
Thank you Nick for snow!!! I think we’ll miss these snow in the near future. The mountains will be naked and we human will be shy or embrassed to see these mountains naked coz it is we,humans who is destroying snow creating global warming.
I LOOOOOVE IT!!!!
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!
Our first snow of the season here in Coney Island, New York
Thank you and Happy holidays to everyone at WordPress!
Thank you! That is so cool – just found out today, and just after I wrote about the snow! Thanks again!
very cool!!! Merry Christmas!!
Yay. I love this. Everybody will have Christmas for sure.
Unfortunately, here, in Jakarta – Indonesia, will not come any snow at all 😦
Funny I must be the only one that doesn’t have this option for snow? I am using the Mystique theme, might that be the problem here?
cool
Hubiese preferido que solamente se viese la nieve en la cabecera. Ya que los que tenemos plantilla con fondo negro, es un poco molesto estar leyendo una entrada con la nieve de por medio.
Whoo Hoo!! Thanks!
Cool!
This is really nice. We just moved from northwest Ohio to the south and I really miss the Ohio-Michigan winters.
Thanks !!! Makes my Christmas cake photos look great.
Wow, I love it, thank you!! 😉
Hey – It’s snowing on my blog! Awesome! thank you!
Even though it is not a new feature to me, I always get excited and pleased to see it.
Thank yuo for this option.
Thanks, Nick! Great stuff!
Not for me but appreciate having the option!
Seriously, the “snowflakes” reminded me of meteors or stars fading out more than snow. So I got other pictures in my mind than christmas holidays.
Happy holiday with snow, lovely snowmen, snow forts!
THANK YOU!! This is great! I miss snow here in the UAE seeing as how it’s part of Canadian life….so thank you once again!!
Hey, thank you WordPress! This is what really makes winter. Here in Durban, South Africa, we have never seen snow, ever! Serves us right for being in the best (geographical) space around, I suppose.
This is a brilliant feature. thank you. I love it!
Annoying!
It even shows on the first screen after I log in, the one with the list of my blogs, and yet some of the cool things I’d like to do on my blogs aren’t allowed.
Bah, humbug…..
how awesome is that? dandruff for my blog! ha
thx 😡
Thank you!
Love the snow thing! It should last longer than January 4th… I’m from Michigan, too, and we just got our first little bit of snow yesterday morning! And hey Gaylord person!!! I am coming up there in January!!! 😀 I wanna see cute elks and that huge ice glob thing 🙂
Excellent 🙂
Great work Thank you
Merry Christmas
Great. Love to see snow once in a while!
FYI, I did have it turned on last year, but it didn’t automatically start up again for me this year…
Right now we have 30°C in Santiago, Chile. To see snow in my blog is just perfect.
YESS!! Thank you! I love the snow extra! Too bad it’s only available to Jan. 4 It’s a nice touch up though!
