Today WordPress.com was down for approximately 110 minutes, our worst downtime in four years. The outage affected 10.2 million blogs, including our VIPs, and appears to have deprived those blogs of about 5.5 million pageviews.
What Happened: We are still gathering details, but it appears an unscheduled change to a core router by one of our datacenter providers messed up our network in a way we haven’t experienced before, and broke the site. It also broke all the mechanisms for failover between our locations in San Antonio and Chicago. All of your data was safe and secure, we just couldn’t serve it.
What we’re doing: We need to dig deeper and find out exactly what happened, why, and how to recover more gracefully next time and isolate problems like this so they don’t affect our other locations.
I will update this post as we find out more, and have a more concrete plan for the future.
I know this sucked for you guys as much as it did for us — the entire team was on pins and needles trying to get your blogs back as soon as possible. I hope it will be much longer than four years before we face a problem like this again.
Update 1: We’ve gathered more details about what happened. There was a latent misconfiguration, specifically a cable plugged someplace it shouldn’t have been, from a few months ago. Something called the spanning tree protocol kicked in and started trying to route all of our private network traffic to a public network over a link that was much too small and slow to handle even 10% of our traffic which caused high packet loss. This “sort of working” state was much worse than if it had just gone down and confused our systems team and our failsafe systems. It is not clear yet why the misconfiguration bit us yesterday and not earlier. Even though the network issue was unfortunate, we responded too slowly in pinpointing the issue and taking steps to resolve it using alternate routes, extending the downtime 3-4x longer than it should have been.
Matt and the gang, we love you guys and the work you do. No one else would have been so honest about the situation. I’m glad I chose WP.com.
Honestly, I was horrified when I heard WordPress was down, but you did a great job of keeping us informed and getting back to brigthtening movement in indonesia. Thanks so much for that!
Oh, yeah, like I’m gonna complain about my FREE BLOG which works absolute wonders 99.99 percent of the time, including the entirety of the time (up till now) I’ve had a blog here? Not likely—you guys are the best.
Dude–I remember back in the day when we had to draw and type by hand, xerox our stuff and hand it out on street corners and record stores (remember those?).
Even with this interruption your service is to me, quite frankly, miraculous.
Look at the stats…10 million or so blogs down, five or so million missed page view? Huh—I think loss of about half a page view per blog in four years, for me at least, is pretty amazing stuff.
Reading over the comments, I see most of the other bloggers agree with me.
You dudes just keep doing the fantastic job you are doing…we love you.
After all, who else would let me go on and on and on like this?
wow @ depriving VIPS of 5.5 million pageviews and all others, we was sure it was something else
thanks for the update wasn’t sure what happened till yesterday it didn’t last too long so that’s a good thing

New to WP, I thought it was a problem with my blog. Apparently, it was not the case! Take it easy Matt and your colleagues.

i’m proud to be wordpress user

I’m still down, have been for 3 days. Would love some advice on how to get back up and running. Really frustrated. Thanks for your time.

Jen – I took a look and your blog isn’t hosted on WordPress.com. You’ll need to work with your web hosting company to get your blog back up.
I’d hate to be the guy who plugged the thing into the wrong thing!
Thanks for the detailed explaination Matt. Funny thing though, I’m in California and I was online all day and never noticed the problem. What ever you were doing the outtage didn’t seem to effect my ability to post. You guys are great. Keep up the good work!!
Oh well, these things happen. Glad you fixed it so fast. I used to post on MSN spaces, that was down all the time. It was always so slow or down, so I left it.
Thanks for such detailed updates – appreciate your hard work and honesty!
I just tried to post to two of my blogs and the posts didn’t show up on the blog. Is there a problem today, too? Thanks!
Yeah that was really frightening, especially i had a big willingness to post something that day… please watch those cables carefully !:) Best regards
I just want to thank you for providing this wonderful service. The downtime did not affect my blog (I think), but then I am just so grateful to have this platform to work with.
Not even close to being the end of the world….I love you all for keeping us informed….THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!!!
We don’t like it… but we definitely understand. I wouldn’t want your job that day for anything! 🙂
Absolutely fantastic job chief! I did notice it went down but waiting a little bit wasn’t a problem. Thanks for letting us know. Sounds like it was somewhat complicated – either way WordPress crew, you rule!!!
Thanks so much for resolving this issue so quickly! I’m impressed that you consider 110 minutes a long downtime 🙂 Makes me very happy to have my blog on wordpress. Y’all are fantastic!
Is it possible Wp was hacked?
No, this wasn’t a hack.
Thank you for sharing info. Good work.
You guys are awesome; thanks for acting so quickly to help us all out!
I didn’t even realize anything was wrong!
Phew.
Thanks for your devoted updates and behind-the-scenes running around!
Wow, thanks for updating us. In other words, the core router at your datacenter got into a routing loop. Your datacenter did an absolute no-no … changes in core router should not be done without explicit notification. You guys were at the mercy of your datacenter.
At least the service is back up.
I won’t bite you. 😉
Thank God I was one of the bloggers that got caught up in this mess
but thanks for fixing it
Thanks for all you do…
You guys deserve some slack every once in a while. The important thing was that you kept us updated.
Everyone and everything has a meltdown once in a while. As they say, anomalies happen. Your site rocks!
These things happen, TBH I’d never have known unless I read this post.
I can’t get to my blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Google tells me it’s not found on the server. What can I do?
I can see your WordPress.com blog fine here. If you’re still having trouble accessing it, please contact our support team for help: https://wordpress.com/support/contact/
wordpress was down? never noticed it.
Since you guys are sincere, its totally okay with me ..
two thumbs up !!
Thanks for the update.
A great service, we can forgive the occasional lapse 🙂
Thanks for the update. I like your business sense. I felt very bad when the system was down.
I could not be more impressed with your actions. The response from your community of users says it all. Thank you for creating this community for all of us and keeping it safe, secure and available.
Thank God, unlike some organisations, you didnt try to cover up the whole thing and pretend nothing ever happened.
WORDPRESS ROCKS THE ROOF OF MY HOUSE !!!!
Thanks for all of your good works. : ) 😀
Hey you guys are only human…computers glitch. It could have been a lot worse, you could have been running vista and really bit the whole enchilada.
At first I thought it was a hack or DoS, but I understand now.
Personally, I wouldn’t have noticed unless I had read this!
tnx
Its exactly this type of honesty and transparency that reinforce my confidence in the WordPress.com service. Service problems are extremely rare but when they do happen I know why they happened and that steps have been taken to prevent the same thing from happening again. Keep up the great work guys and thanks again for providing a top notch product!
110 minutes every 4 years. On free hosting. I can live with that 🙂
Keep up the good work guys 😀
You know what really makes a business trustworthy? It’s when the leaders admit there was a goof and explain it and deal very openly with the customer base. You guys get Five Stars for: 1) fixing the problem; and 2) having the guts to be self-critical.
WordPress has been a great service, and VERY dependable, since I first signed on a little over a year ago. That alone would buy a lot of loyalty. Your handling of this situation only enhances that.
thejazzmonger
well had us all in a mode of panic
thought the cyber gods had finally pulled the plug on it all
or some govt agent provocateur 🙂
Hey 110 minutes is not such a big deal, compared with the quality of the ‘normal’ service you guys provide. A big ‘up’ to you all for the way the problem has been dealt with. 🙂
Thanks for all your hard work in getting things back together! Life happens. At least everyones Blogs were safe! keep up the hard! God Bless
Rob
Thanks! You do a great job. Appreciate it!
Thanks for the update. Your customer service is incredible! Your quick responses to everything are greatly appreciated!
Thanx 4 the good info, keep up the good work =)
Thanks for your work, but honestly… what’s the big deal?
Things happen, Matt. Judging by the previous comments, we all understand. 🙂 Thanks for taking the time to keep us all informed.
Wow!! this is a great relief I thought with me being a newbie and just starting to make my own site I shut down th whole Word Press with my blog:o) Geesser What a relief. Thanks LeRoyLol:0)
Thanks for the quick fix. I appreciate all your hard work so I can have a blog. I’m amazed at the quality of behind the scenes content. It makes blogging more fun.
Hi Matt and the team,
In Bahasa Indonesia:Tidak apa-apa. Kalian selalu melakukan yang terbaik.Kami cinta kamu. (No problem. You always did the best. We love you)
Thanks for letting us know. I noticed that my newbie Blog on computer security is scrambled.
Please let us know when you think you have it recovered.
I may have to start over.
Again, your candor is appreciated.
Bill
William, we’ve been back to normal since last Thursday. If you’re having trouble with your blog, please contact support at https://wordpress.com/support/contact/ and they’ll be able to help.
Thanks for caring. Truly I appreciate you all!
If 110 minutes is the worst in four years, I’d say you’re doing pretty well.
If a standard comparable to that were anywhere near commonplace for major providers of essential services and products, the world would look a lot different.
Also, kudos for allowing what seems like all of the most essential functionality without JavaScript or numerous pop-ups and third-party domains. Quite a contrast to your major competitor…
thanks for the update
Thank you Matt, for their efforts…and Good Luck for you!
Thank you for keeping us informed. Really great work .Keep up the good work!
I want to express how impressed I am that you reported the situation so honestly. Sadly, this is something all to rare in today’s corporate dog-eat-dog world, and i genuinely want to thank you for maintaining your integrity.
I never noticed.
Good job, even if it looked like a disaster in the first place. It’s always the same. Nobody cares as long as systems are running fine, but when they are not available, they only see the downtime, not the uptime that has been there for four years.
So don’t worry, keep up the good work.
That’s good job man… Better luck next time…
Hahaha! Was the blog down? The blog didn’t go down here! I didn’t even notice it was down, when did it go down, when I was bathing maybe. I kind’a take 2 hours for a thorough bath. Nice work of you guys – and to think that it’s free – I shall post you some money before you start charging me for blogging. I can’t believe its free!!!!
Despite the 110 minutes of downtime still the best blogging platform around. Keep up the good work.
Don’t worry, these things happen. It’s only a minor glitch compared to your otherwise fantastic work. Hope you find the source of the error soon.
Must’ve happened when I was looking the other way, because I didn’t notice anything.
Anyway, keep up the good work, guys. Serving 10.2 million blogs is huge. I’m currently struggling with a hosting company that can’t even help me run one (1) simple Joomla site… So yeah, no need to apologize 😉
Thanks for informing.
I could open my blog but styles and pictures didn’t display…
Actually I didn’t even realize it was down …. the other “blog” thingy ( you can see how computer literate I am 🙂 so I for one love you guys who take care of the business end of this technology …. I used to use was down more than it was up… I have been very impressed and plan plan on paying for your service will be in touch
Don’t sweat the small stuff!
Didn’t directly have an effect on me, but I appreciate the explanation from y’all.
Great job and thanks for the info!
Great work everyone, very professional! I’ve been in situations where a relatively simple (but hard to pinpoint) glitch takes down an entire website and so I know how harrowing it can be. It’s great that you not only narrowed down to the problem but even put up an update here. I’m glad I chose WordPress as the platform to host my blogs! 🙂
Thanks a lot for the explanation & hard work
Hey, at least you guys fixed your mistake. I’m just glad that everything is still there.
I am unable to edit or revise one of my pages. There is no preview or publish button on the page I am trying to revise. Now I can’t even get it back it up even without the revisions.
Is this related to the downtime you guys experienced? I tried searching for this on help and in forums, but can’t seem to find anything. I have no preview or publish icon on my page posts. Help!
Please contact support, they’ll be able to help you figure out what’s going on with the page you’re trying to revise: https://wordpress.com/support/contact/
Thank you for your hard work….I, and I’m sure others, appreciate the fact that all of you work so hard so that we can keep our blogs going…dellsdani
I’m still a happy wordpress.com user. Thanks guys.
Well. I thought it was something I had screwed up. Ever onward. Well done.
thanks for the update.
i am really impressed with your honesty and transparency, if only other companies had the same guts…
Thanks a lot for your explanation. WordPress is online 99,9% during the year, so being 110 minutes offline is not that bad for me either.
Really appreciate your openness!
Thanks for the details and keeping us informed. Thanks for the great work…
you did great work!
excellent!
