One of my favorite things about working on WordPress.com is that improvements get made and pushed out as soon as they’re tested and ready. Just a day after I wrote about manually changing your blog’s timezone to account for Daylight Saving Time, Ryan updated WordPress.com so you can now set your timezone by choosing a city.
Here’s how it works.
Log in to your dashboard, click on Settings > General, and scroll to Timezone. You now have the option to pick a city that’s in your current timezone instead of a UTC timezone. For example, I live in the same timezone as Los Angeles, so I’ve selected that city.
Once you’ve set your timezone this way, you won’t need to change it again to account for Daylight Saving Time. WordPress.com will automatically update your blog’s time settings as needed.
If you’re interested, here’s a full list of the timezones we support for reference.

Timing is everything. I was just going to update and saw the change. Thank you.
No Seattle? Really?
why there is no beijing time in the timezone????
Thanks so much. This is just awesome!
Thanks for super useful info! : )
In Asia for Indian time zone Calcutta and Kolkata are listed; they are the same city. Calcutta is the former name. Also you have not mentioned Delhi and Mumbai.
Nice idea but needs LOTS more work. The list of cities is horrible for the US. The closest city to me on the list is half a state away and is in a different time zone.
I hope they will be adding many, many more cities soon.
Amit, Al: We don’t set the city names in the list. See https://wordpress.com/blog/2010/03/16/set-your-blogs-timezone-by-city/#comment-83818 for a great explanation of how those city names were chosen.
Nice work
Thanks. Jakarta is on the list 🙂
This is Great! But seriously, not even ONE city in Texas?
Please add Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and Corpus Christi to the list.
I’m sure the folks in Louisiana will appreciate having Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Shreveport on the list.
Those are all Central Time.
You might be doing this already, but it could be a good idea to make sure that the Top 5 cities in each state are represented. That would make a good user experience.
You guys are great! Love WordPress! Thanks in advance. Please notify me when it’s done.
Thanks.
Awesome!
nice info. thanks.
never think about it before, thx mate
that’s very cool
Thanks, selecting Tehran from this list, is better than UTC +3:30.
Just Cool……… Paul kim….
Wow LP you are so right 😀
Is there any way to add “Kota Kinabalu” on the list? Kota Kinabalu is one of the capital cities cities in Malaysia, similar to Kuching or Kuala Lumpur. Thank you
We are currently using the timezone list from the Zoneinfo database. Check out this comment for more background about that list.
No Central (US) cities!? No Kansas City, Omaha, Des Moines, heck, even Topeka or Council Bluffs would do! I see North Dakota, but is that even in my time zone? Who would know that?! For now, I’ll stick with the old way, till I can be sure about the new list. Thanks for a good start, though.
Paul, Great Job on the first release of this feature. It looks like there’s some fine-tuning to be done, but it’s a fantastic step in the right direction.
Wow, great .. thank you very much Mr. WordPress and management…:-)
Great Job! Any help keeping my times and dates straight are always appreciated!! Thanks!!
Thank you so much! Yeah… There was no Atlanta, but I just picked New York. Well, it doesn’t really matter for me 🙂
I’m surprised Atlanta isn’t listed.
Thanks!
very good!
@};-
Thank you! Now I have scheduled posts coming out in my morning time instead of the US!
omg – a mircacle! 😉 Thank you!
Great!!! LOVE IT. Thank you
Thanks Paul! I didn’t even know I could do this.
THANK YOU !
THANK YOU !THANK YOU !THANK YOU !
🙂
hey….thats really a good feature.!
woauw… cool.
superbighug
Thank you!!
I wish I could say that I’ve been waiting years for just such a feature but I only set my account up today. However, I’m sure I’d have wanted just such a feature had I been on here years ago ;o) I’ll be sure to make the required adjustment :o)
This is great except I can’t believe you don’t have Ottawa listed. It is the CAPITAL of Canada. But you have Moncton, NB…scratching head…can you fix that?
If you are in Ottawa, you should pick Montreal from the timezone list. See this comment for an explanation of the cities list.
Good stuff, I like the improvements!
Can’t find the major Indian city Mumbai or Bombay!! Please suggest/help..
You should pick the closest place from this list.
There’s no Dallas or Houston, which are the third and fourth largest metro areas in the US, but there’s Dawson Creek?
Who made this list? Let me guess. Someone who grew up in Dawson Creek. 🙂
The list is from the Zoneinfo database. Check out the earlier comment in this post about the timezone list. If you are in Dallas or Houston (CDT – Central Daylight Time), choose Chicago.
AWESOME NEWS!
Thanks…
So …Houston TX is the 4th and probably soon to be 3 rd largest city after the census, also it is pretty much in the center of the Central time zone and not one single TX city is listed not even Dallas…
Where’s Nashville!!!?????
What did Texas do to piss the Linux timezone people off? Not a single city in Texas or Arizona listed; when I want to set up a Linux box, I have to give Mexico as my city…
Would be really great if you could hook it up with some kind of geo-database to get the information:
http://www.geonames.org/export/web-services.html#timezone
Triad Marine, mamasgonecrazy, kfsone: Check out this comment for background on the database we’re using, especially on which cities are included and why. We’ve gotten a lot of feedback from folks wanting us to increase the number of city names included, and we’ll look at that for the future. https://wordpress.com/blog/2010/03/16/set-your-blogs-timezone-by-city/#comment-83818
thank you very much for this feature. i ❤ WP. (:
