Media is a big part of my life. Showing friends a slideshow of a weekend excursion is a common occurrence. When blogging these photos, displaying them in a long gallery doesn’t always make sense. There wasn’t any other option to show off the images uploaded to your WordPress.com blog until now.
Today, we’re rolling out 100% JavaScript powered slideshows. But, why did I bother to mention that they’re JavaScript powered? Most importantly, because we’re consuming the web in different ways. Our JavaScript powered slideshows will work in any browser that supports CSS and JavaScript – even the iPad and iPhone!
The slideshows are simple and straightforward. Upload your photos as a gallery, then click the “Insert slideshow” button, or use the [slideshow] shortcode. The slideshow automatically adjusts its dimensions to fit your blog’s theme.
Without further ado, here are some pictures I took while visiting some zoos over the years.
This feature is currently only available on WordPress.com. A WordPress.org/self-hosted plugin will be available soon.
Great!!!
Last month I turned myself into a pretzel, trying to produce a slide show on my blog and more or less went through all possibilities or did not like the ‘background site’ I had to use, or got some publicity I did not want at all… so now can try for real 🙂
Thanks Noël!
No chance of fiddling with height or width, I believe, but a nice addition all the same!
i love this!
just tried it out…just fantastic stuff guys!!! WTG… 🙂
excellent feature. probably i will start a photo section in my blog, for this feature
An excellent feature:) I’ll be using it to put up a slide-show of my caricatures soon. I was wondering if there was a way to utilize the caricatures/cartoons that I have uploaded to the blog at different times to create the slide-show. Guess I’ll know more after I’ve experimented with it!
Thanks:)
Fantastic!
I was looking for just this kind of thing the other day and was frustrated with the options.
WellDone WordPress, again!
Now this is something that will save a lot of real estate on screen.
Good work. Keep pressing the words!!! 😉
AWESOME!! I was waiting for this kindda thing for a long time…
Supercalifragilistic expialigocious! Will there be any additional options in the future, like setting the duration of the display of each photo, the kind of frame (absent/present, color etc), whether the show repeats or not after all slides have been shown?
Wait a minute !!!
IT’S APRIL FOOLS DAY and WordPress.com is launching a JAVASCRIPT “thing” ????
So Is this a hoax or is it just a poor choice of a day to announce this cool feature ???
Much needed feature for photobloger, I will try this.
been waiting for this since i started here in wp
yay…so looking forward to trying this out in my photoblog 🙂
Brilliant work. Really impressed with new features appearing almost weekly!
Wow this is the great feature i always long for. Thank you!
Yes. Yes, and Yes! You rock, WordPress. You all have been a big part of helping Summit Voice succeed as an independent, grassroots local source of news here in Summit County, Colorado, and this will help take us to the next level.
Super cool!
that rocks!
I love WordPress! Keep up the great upgrades — really appreciate it…
Yet another reason to love WordPress!!
Those Livejournal and Blogger people got nothin’ on you. 😀
I’ll have to take some pics and try this feature out!!
Really cool stuff lately. At last, we could upload some pictures in a slide show. Wow. 🙂 🙂
Fantastic! I’m looking forward to trying this out. The gallery option never really worked for me.
Also, I really enjoyed your slideshow. Gorgeous photos!
Very snazzy, Noel. Can’t wait for the .org plugin.
This is a mind blowing offering from WordPress guys for sure. But I think it will hurt some images traffic that search engines offer, if used randomly. My suggest here will be to use it where needed only.
Many thanks once again!
FanTAStic! Thank you!!!
FINALLY SOMETHING LIKE THIS.
I LIKE. NO. I LOVE 😀
Thank youuuuu!!
YESS!!!! I was just lamenting the fact that I (sorry) really dislike the current look of the galleries for my blog. This is exactly what I needed. I was just about to resort to sending folks to my Facebook page for photos. Thanks so much.
thumbs up
Great news, thanks!
How about adding a slight zoom effect? I think that adds even more impact to slideshows.
Fantastic news! You guys rock!
Wow! Always wanted to see this! =)
this is why wordpress is supreme!
Wow! Wonderfull! I have been waiting for it. Thanks 😀
Awesome! Have already got a slideshow up and “sliding” on my blog. Thanks WordPress!
Great, except for the forward and back arrows on the photos. Really now!
WordPress, You are Awsome! Oh and Noël, great posts. You always have great news. You even talked about the theme I’m using now!
Thanks!
wow…this is a great feature 🙂
Now I don’t have to edit my pictures and put in 1 frame anymoore.
Thx 🙂
One word – AWESOME!!!
greatly..
Aw man, I could’ve used this for a post I made a couple of weeks ago, but I’ll be sure to use it in the future! Thanks!
Like Like Like!!!!!
Wonderful feature, Great !!
that’s totally awesome!! thank u so much!
it’d even be better if it could show the full- size picture when clicking it 😉
Love it!
this is great, but it would be nice to be able to:
1. embed more than one slide show in a post
2. be able to choose which photos used in the post were included in the slideshow and which were not
3. determine the size of the slideshow
4. have some control over the background of the slide show
As it is, every image used in a post ends up in the slide show and only one slide show can be used in a post (tho used over and over) meaning huge load times, limited image use throughout a post, and other similar issues.
That said, I do love having the option to use a slide show
thanks for sharing 🙂 Just thought about this thing yesterday…haha 🙂 Thanks!!
Thanks!
Looks really good. I have changed my galleries over to use slideshows instead. Would be really nice if we could get the option to show the captions as well though.
Customers – never happy. But you are doing a GREAT job!
Nice feature. A few questions though. Is there any control on slideshow look and function. I see there are different transitions (fade, shuffle, turnRight, scrollRight, scrollUp, fadeZoom, zoom, wipe). How are these set? Also, can the background color be changed or can a user pick a slide and display it in a separate window (like the gallery does today)?
New around, but it’s nice to see how WP improving day by day,
thank you for all ^_-
Awesomesauce.
I’m going to use this when I document my endometrial ablation in a few weeks!
Thanks, WordPress, for a cool upgrade that even I can understand : )
Hi,
I’ve done it, so easy and it works really well. Its a better way to put on a bunch of photos but I think I’ll stick to the usual post if I only have 3 or 4.
Thank you,
xxx
Can’t wait to try slideshow feature. Just need to figure out uploading the gallery; can do single images okay. Part of my blogging learning curve. Thanks for letting us wordpress.com blogging folks in on the latest feature(s)!
Good work! Bravo!
Yes! Thank you SO much! I have been waiting for something like this!
nice.. thanks.
i insert both gallery and slideshow shortcode in the same post. It works well when i view on computer. But there is problem when i view on iPhone 3G S. The slideshow will cover over the gallery. So there is some photos can’t be seen.

OMG, this is freakin’ amazing! I hated the old galleries… This is going to be so much fun!
Thanks for your awesomeness, WP team! 😉
nice 1 Staff!!!! TNX TNX TNX
Good, I like, nice
Great feature that I’m already using. Thank you.
Thanks so much, we have been waiting for this feature.
Thank you! Looks like I might use it for my sewing!
Yay…Finally. Just hope that one day WordPress.com users will be able to share videos not only from YouTube.
You can share videos from lots of places. Check out the list on the Videos help page and if you don’t see what you want listed there, try Vodpod.
Very glad to see this added. Can’t wait to use it on a .org site as well.
This will be great when it comes out for self-hosted blogs also. Looking forward to it.
An absolutely fantastic improvement for me and I´d think everyone.
Is it possible to get this to “pages” too?
Thanx
How exciting! This will be great in showing how to create a recipe, step by step!
Great job! I just started my page and am still learning the machanics of everything but I can tell I will like using this additional “stuff”… Thank you.
It is great! Thank you from Germany. Is there a way to choose the order (or sequence) of the pictures? Is it possible to create a button to choose the speed?
😯 Awesome! I may have to re-organize some pages on my blog! 🙂
This really fills a need, and I’m very grateful for it. I have done all sorts of nutty things just to get access to slideshows posted elsewhere.
But…if it would be possible to extend the Flickr interface so that Flickr slideshows would work, that would avoid having to upload twice. Just a dream.
Thank you for all the hard work on this!
This feature truly rocks, thanks for the update because this will come in handy when its time for me to showcase some of my photography. Slide shows always add something unique to whatever page or post one is on..
Good job!
How are we supposed to know when a plugin for self-hosted WordPress is available?
This is awsome! I just got home from one week in Egypt with our new underwatercamera and I have tons of pictures I want to share on my blog and this is just perfect! =D
A great feature , thanks !
Can you also make it possible to change the background from black to white ?
That would make it perfect.
Yeah!!! This is going to be awesome!! Been using Flickr and 1 photo uploads, but have been longing to do more!! Thank you WordPress!!
Can’t wait for .org plugin. Pls keep us posted.
I loved the slide show example. This is a wonderful idea.
Thanks. Now we can share all of these classic car photos for all to see.
i just used it and it’s great! pics look good, nice slide speed. well done!
WordPress is the best.
But it could be better if you incorporate too the option to add a URL in every photo and give us the control to manage the time between a photo and the next photo.
Better yet if the lateral bar is visible in the option ” Page of enclosures” in insert a gallery.
hooray. you caught me just in time – i was about to go hunting about to find another application that would do this for me. thanks!
Super cool feature can’t wait to try it!!! Thanks.
OMG! This is indeed exciting news!!!!!!!!
I can really use this feature. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Way cool. It took a couple tries to get it going -eyedee10tee error-but it’s looking good now. Thank you for this great new feature. WordPress rocks!
For all of the comments asking for more customization and slideshow options: as always, we love your feedback and hearing what we could do to make this feature even better. For now we are doing our best to keep this feature as simple as possible, and we’ll implement more customization options in the future.
As far as a WordPress.org plugin is concerned, that is in the works so please stay tuned!
Does this work only for photos uploaded to your WP blog, or can/will it be configurable to also pull from RSS or APIs like Flickr?
The slideshow works only for photos uploaded to your WordPress.com account.
I’ve tried it and I love it 🙂 thank you wordpress … you’re the best and that’s why I keep promoting you
this is awesome. can’t wait to try it out!
