Each weekday, we select about ten new blog posts for the Freshly Pressed section of the WordPress.com homepage. These posts represent how WordPress can be used to entertain, enlighten, or inspire.
Getting promoted to Freshly Pressed is a major traffic win because WordPress.com receives a high volume of page views. And, we have a feed set up so people can subscribe to Freshly Pressed. Why do we do all this? It’s our way of saying we like you. We really like you.
So, by now you might be wondering how to get featured. It’s all about the content. Here are five bits o’ advice that will increase your chances of landing on the homepage:
1. Write unique content that’s free of bad stuff.
Each post that makes it to Freshly Pressed contains original content created by the WordPress user. Bad stuff includes (but isn’t limited to) plagiarism, hate speech, fear-mongering, adult/mature content, improperly used images that belong to someone else, spam or content that is primarily advertorial.
2. Include images or other visuals.
Although not every topic can be illustrated, we believe most blog posts can and should have a visual element. We like original images (meaning, your own), but if you don’t have any of your own and decide to use someone else’s, be sure you properly credit the original source. Video rocks, too. You may get a request from us to add an image before you are promoted to Freshly Pressed — the faster you can respond, the more likely we’ll put your post on the homepage.
3. Add tags.
We find new posts by surfing the tag pages. If you don’t use tags, we can’t find you and how sad would that be? Also, don’t use tags that are too obscure (“beauty tips from the ancient world”) but rather more common tags (“beauty,” “history”).
4. Aim for typo-free content.
We know, we’re human, too — errors happen. We recommend using our Proofreading feature before you hit “publish.” If you’ve got a few typos but we really like your post, we may ask you to fix them. In most cases, we’ll put your post on Freshly Pressed after you’ve made the changes.
5. Cap off your post with a compelling headline.
Your headline needs to stand out. Avoid swear words, excessive punctuation or vague statements. We love a clever headline, and that’s often the reason we click on your article in the first place.
Examples:
Good headline: I Won the Lottery and You Didn’t!
Bad headline: U Loserz, i WON!!!!!11!
Go Forth and Create
So, that’s it! Once you’ve been promoted, you’ll receive an email from us, and you also will notice your page views and comments increasing. Enjoy the ride! You deserve it!
I can only hope that I should be so lucky as to add my humble blog to front page icon-clast-isty…
Great tips, thanks for sharing! Definitely think I’m going to rethink my tagging scheme now.
Thank you for including us last week – We really appreciated it and the spikes in page views was very exciting.
Serendipity? I just published a post today on making trying to make my blog more popular with the goal one day of being on Freshly Pressed! And here is your article telling me just how to do it. Ask and you shall receive as they say. I’m one step closer!
Thank you so much for featuring my blog on Freshly Pressed. The response was incredible — the number of page views to my blog skyrocketed, and I picked up several new subscribers. I’ll keep your tips in mind for future posts.
nice tips, I WANT TO BE FRESHLY PRESSED!
Cool! Nice to get some tips!
Very nice! I hope to get featured 🙂
Do you feature blogs that are mostly art?
Yes, that’s possible.
Would adding “Freshly Pressed” tag help? 🙂
Well, that still doesn’t explain how you guys pick the lucky blog posts out – looks like you just pick stuff out randomly (yeah, after weeding out undesirables…)
that would be awesome to be put out there, I need someone to help me with my pain….its sucks going through this all alone.
Thank you for this good information. 🙂
Now I know why I got featured a few months ago 🙂 What cracked me up is that it was a post that I literally threw up on a lunch hour after reading a Facebook status that put me OVER the edge. And yet, I did deal with it with sarcasm and humor vs venom. It was a cool ride.
Those are really good tips….and I have met them all on just about every one of my posts! I would love to be featured….I write mostly about lupus, to try to spread awareness about the disease and let people know it is out there, and how people like me deal with it on a daily basis, while being a wife, mome, etc….thanks!
You’d go with “beauty” rather than “beauty tips from the ancient world”? really? The obscure tags sound much more interesting.
For the purposes of tagging, I’d use both (if i were blogging a post).
Is Joy Victory your real name? 🙂
yep
“1. Write unique content that’s free of bad stuff.”
Hmm… why do I think a blog about mom’s lung cancer will never fly here?
I would *absolutely* feature content related to health issues like cancer. That is not what I meant by bad stuff.
I write about a variety of things seen on my trips, but so far the consistent spikes are for the tags about my trip to Silver Springs, FL. I do use tags, my own photos, and try to use pull-in headlines, but it looks like I’m kinda stuck on this one subject. How can I get beyond my FL experience?
Hi there, that’s a little off-topic for this thread, but I’d be happy to help you. Email me at editor @ wordpress.com if you need further help.
Well, well, rules, rules, rules. Sure, I get it, but that means a complete disneyfication of the real world out there. What’s next? Only if you use theme X for your blog you will be featured etc.?
We’ve been writing and publishing on (mostly Asian) movies since more than 20 years now. That may include adult content. That rarely includes copyrighted material (as we are press we have access to the material even we can’t prove that to wordpress), but that’s hard to explain to wordpress I guess.
Anyways, we are not publishing for the wordpress rule makers, but for the crowd out there. So I guess we all have to define our objective and do what we have to do. If your primary goal is to be featured on Freshly Pressed, it means you have to come up with articles that correspond to what wordpress expects and allows you to do. Fair enough; their game, their rules. Our choice.
We’re not asking you to stop writing about these topics. We’re asking you to keep in mind those 5 guidelines strictly for making it to Freshly Pressed.
Content that “entertains, enlightens and inspires…” a three course meal I’d love to share with friends! What a wonderful idea and thanks for the tips, Joy.
I wrote a post about this literally two days ago.
Only I made mine a bit less structured.
Thanks for sharing this info. I’ve always wondered who was behind this and how it works.
Hi
This is great ideas. My language is Swedish and I write my blog in English and have very hard to find good headlines. My blogs are very welldone and very unique and I hope some day I will be freshly pressed. You’re always welcome to my blog!
Cheers
Hmmn. Say you have three blogs under one log in and there’s only one blog you want publicized…
How do others see your stuff under the same name?
I think I have to distinguish the meaning of blogging from writing a diary.
I actually like the “bad headline” more. It is definitely more original!
I find this somewhat discriminatory. Just because something contains words that have been deemed socially “taboo” doesn’t take away from the insightfulness or any other aspect. I understand that there are minors that may be looking into the material found here, but in case you haven’t noticed these same “minors” are not at all strangers to this type of language. Obviously, if they are using the site then they are visiting other sites and I can guarantee that they are exposed to much worse than what one would expect to find here.
I just feel that this is a limit on the freedom to say whatever I want to say whenever I want to say it. First amendment…if I am not mistaken. However, in the interest of fairness, I would like to offer up a suggestion. How about including all in this opportunity, regardless of content, and placing a warning along with the post if it is deemed to be “socially unbearable”? Seems to be a fair suggestion, but what do I know…I’m just a guy that “society” deems inappropriate.
You are very much allowed to post on whatever you want (within reason – every blog service has Terms of Service), and we’re not asking you to stop anything, we’re just letting you know that because of the broad audience on Freshly Pressed, we keep it fairly PG.
Thank you for this, sincerely. I’m wondering of an occasional expletive would hamper a blog’s chances of being featured?
No, not at all. I think they can be used appropriately at times.
Good to know. I’ll keep these things in mind while working on my blog.
thanks a lot for this information, and for this posting too
best regards
Are political blogs “bad” or “good?”
It depends on the tone and analytical thought process behind the point-of-view.
Joy! Victory!
That’s exactly what I’ll be saying if you choose one of my posts and I get an email!
Even though I can’t even imagine how hard that would be to do.
Have fun, good luck, and I’ll keep my fingers and toes crossed that one day you choose one of my posts for Freshly Pressed!
I never thought I would ever hear myself saying these words, but … I SO want to be freshly pressed! 😉
Do you exercise any preference between supporters of the “Anthropogenic CO2 Causes global warming” theory and those who maintain it is trash or do you avoid the subject completely?
Cheers
Roger
No, I don’t exercise a preference on the subject matter itself. More on the overall tone of a piece. There’s a way to express one’s opinion without being intentionally insulting to those who disagree, and that’s what I’m looking for in each post: (And this only applies to selection for Freshly Pressed — you’re free to call global warming supporters’ ideas “trash” in your blog.)
These tips were extremely helpful and I’ve already started applying the tips you suggested! Thank you for the support!
Great Information! Duly noted and will aim for appearing up there even though I’ve only just created my little space on the web.
Aw, man, you mean I have to be coherent? Thanks for the tips!
– Lisa
Love the idea and I just happen to meet the requirements as I chronicle my natural hair journey in pics and video! Great idea!!!
What about curse words? Is that deemed inappropriate? Where is the line drawn?
It’s really on a case-by-case basis.
Great tips, but I think they ain’t quite for me. Sigh. If only one day I did get freshly pressed. Anyways, I use a lot of visual content. Guess I started taking referencing them properly seriously now….
😦
Great tips! Maybe I’ll be featured in ‘Freshly Pressed’ when my blog grows up. That would be pretty amazing.
~Andrea
Thank you for the fyi. It is nice to know that you take care of the people who have chose to use WordPress. This is a great incentive to keep us on our toes and writing.
Sounds like a diarist like me – who comments on news, science, politics – is an anachronism.
Remind me to mention it to my boss over at the “big” blog where I’m senior contributing editor – doing exactly the same thing – where we get 5 million page views/month.
Awesome information guys. Thanks for the Fresh Press while I drink from my French Press. Cheerio.
The pressure is ON! I hate pressure….
Thanks for the tip. As a newbie, I need all the help I can get. Time to think about tags!
I’m legit. I properly use third-party sources for pics and press releases. I have permission. One day I will be featured. One day. 🙂
Good tips! Do you also feature poetry? I write a lot of poetry, but I cannot recall coming across a poem being featured under freshly pressed.
I should do more of that — thanks for the reminder.
Ahh I can but dream of one day being lucky enough!
I will hope for a Freshly Pressed Future!
Damn you, potty mouth!
What if sometimes posts are free from bad language, but others are not? Not that my other material is very good anyway…
I’ll take note of that 🙂
Joy, what about the blog post where the title was changed from “An African’s Queen” to “A Real African Queen”, the former being the original title? Seems that someone at wordpress.com is changing the titles of blog posts to make them, “stand out”, and that isn’t right.
We do not change the titles. The author may have done that, I don’t know.
I’d love the boost but I think some of my posts might be a little bit too cheeky. I do spell really well though – because I spell things in actual English (words like “humour” for instance) and not that awful American type spelling that we see so often on WP. Mind you, I spell my tags both ways!
I meet all of the requirements. Is there a random drawing or do I need to contact someone?
Thanks,
Philip
There is no drawing. The tips I wrote above are to increase your chances of being featured, they are not a guarantee of being featured.
Hey, that was useful. I just put tags/categories on all my posts so far; maybe that’ll do something about my traffic issue 😉
I think that there should be different sections on Freshly Pressed!! One section for the music review blogs featuring the latest music !!
Nice tips, although I think these are the basic ingredients which most of us abide by. My blog is a year old now and as yet has not been featured, although I tend toward the subtle so didn’t really expect to be. I imagine you’re also looking for the spectacular, cutting edge or unusual, as well? There must be some spices you’d like to see added there… 🙂
Actually, I’d like to see more users abiding by these basic ingredients (or variants of them, these are merely guidelines not hard, fast rules for making it to Freshly Pressed). And…while it’d be nice to have “spectacular” posts all the time, the reality is that blogs are often used to portray moments of everyday life. I’d say the answer is to be yourself. 🙂
I have always wondered about how you are selecting the featured blogs.
Thanks for the tips and I assume the 5 tips are minimal to be a featured blog ……
Got featured a while back on a brief article I posted about Avatar, certainly helped get my blog noticed. I can imagine it’s quite tough to get featured though as WordPress boast a pretty impressive number of blogs running! 😀
What the hell kind of stupid advice is this? I mean, come on, are there bloggers out there who DON’T check their spelling and need to be told not to include “bad stuff”?
Seriously, this was the most pointless “advice” I’ve ever read.
And all you people commenting about how great it is really need to get out more.
Thanks Paddy, and I’m sorry you found the article pointless, and that you think everyone else needs to get out more. To each his own.
So, um … basically, your tips to get Freshly Pressed is “Don’t be a crap blogger”? A blog that isn’t following those five suggestions already (minus the adult content thing as pointed out by several already) isn’t worth reading at all, much less being featured anywhere. So what you mean to say is “Be a decent blogger and then pray to the WordPress fairy that we’ll notice something you did and feature it”.
Sorry I’m not joining in with the lovebombing. While I do appreciate that you’re trying to get people to actually pay attention to the quality of their blog, it’s kind of disingenious to imply they might actually luck out and get featured if they do, when I imagine the vast majority of bloggers don’t.
Yes, my tips could be summed up that way. And thanks for branding me a fairy, I guess one could say I’ve been called worse.
In all seriousness, though, it’s true: The majority of bloggers won’t make it to Freshly Pressed. That’s just how that current platform works — only so many posts can go on that page, at any point in time, and still retain any power. If we suddenly put 1,000 posts on there, there’d be no benefit to getting featured. But I want everyone to have a chance, which is why I published these 5 tips — these are minimal rules to follow, as you noted, but less savvy bloggers aren’t necessarily aware of these standards — and that doesn’t make them bad bloggers, just inexperienced or unaware. Showing the basic guidelines evens the playing field.
Cool tips, thanks for sharing! I blog about Islam and Prophet Muhammad, will my blog find a place on Freshly Pressed?
Perhaps, but it needs to be in English (we currently have Freshly Pressed only on our English site).
Joining in with the “tags or categories?” questions.
I still don’t understand the difference between them, but I use categories and not tags. Is my blog hidden or does it still stand a chance of being found on the tag pages?
Nope, categories work like tags, so I’m able to see them. My advice: Use the “recipes” and “food” tag more often.
All my blogs are illustrated with my own ink drawings and it’s a sort of dream diary with content that could be said to be both strange and beautiful and I’m sure there’s an audience out there somewhere – so thanks for the tips.
My motorcycle and personal blogs were featured on VOX the first week I put them up, but I fear that may have been because I was the only person using the service, hence the jump to the awesome WordPress.
Thanks to the tools and community here my bike blog, which is just a bit of fun, goes from strength to strength despite the drivel I write! : )
Sounds like I’m already doing everything right! ; )
I check out Freshly Pressed alllll the time, and like most WPressers, yearn for the day when either of my blogs makes the cut (although it will probably be my weekly ‘cartoon blog’ because it is about 90% about the “images”)
fan-bloody-tastic!!!!
now just to work on that profanity…
Thanks for the tips, can’t wait to be featured!
As we have a gaming site, most of our images come directly from GamesPress (Publishing and press release, media distribution company for all game purposes within the industry) or directly from Publishers such as THQ, Ubisoft, 2K Games etc etc etc. We are allowed to watermark them with our sites logo, same applies for the various Vidocs and trailers. SO these are acceptable aren’t they?
Plus, where exactly does one submit ones entries for Freshly Pressed, as all our items, articles and reviews are all original stuff, and we have a solid following amongst gamers worldwide now. Our articles are lengthy, meaty and well written, our editor makes sure he goes over each submission, even though each will have the authors own unique flair, we do make sure they are composed as best they can be.
Thankfully that’s not my job, doing the layout, art, SEO and other stuff like running the whole site is my mere job hehehe.
We are all volunteers, and make nothing from this in anyway shape or form . . . we’re even going to E3 this year to cover that and report on that, all of which will be original content of course.
So, how does one submit ones content or articles for the possible inclusion into Freshly Pressed. Which by the way, I think is an excellent idea.
On a second note, I’m always plugging WordPress.com. The amount of support you guys have given me over the last 3.5 yrs is nothing short of brilliant11/10. Be it an issue on the site, something to help me with, and the sheer amouynt of extras you guys keep putting up there for us is amazing.
Thanks again for the huge effort all your team puts in – world wide.
Yes, those images seem acceptable they way you’ve explained them. Regarding your question about submission, as of right now, there is no submission process.
I’ve often wondered how bloggers get to be on the “freshly pressed” list. Unique content no bad stuff – check. Photos – check. Tags – check. Typo-free – it should be, check. Compelling headlines – hopefully sometimes, check. Now where did I put my WordPress ju-ju charms? 😛
Ouch. The “adult” stipulation blows my chances right out of the water. It’s a bit like meeting the girl or boy of your dreams, only to be told they can’t date anyone with “e” in their name. Ah well, rules is rules, no?
What if you don’t get many hits? Do you still have chance to get selected?
Yep, I don’t pay attention to hits when I make selections.
So, Joy, would my blog be considered “bad stuff” … just wondering. Thanks.
It comes down to the individual post — is it respectful of others’ opinions and beliefs? And is the post appropriate for a very broad audience? I see that your blog does a nice job of handling a tough subject matter quite rationally. I suggest working on your headlines a bit more. For example, if I’m scanning the “faith” tag pages, and I see “Listening to Jen” as the headline — well, that’s too vague for me. I need to see “My Two Cents on Christian Artist Coming Out of Closet” (or something like that just — just a quickly made up example!)….Do you see how the second version is more eye catching to a person scrolling through many headlines? (If you want more advice, feel free to email me at editor at wordpress.com)
Does not having enough content yet disqualify you? I have a good poem about the coming UK Election, I wanna get it out there, but (apart from the pre-requisite Hello World first post) is the only post.
The more you’re posting, the more likely you’ll get noticed, simply because there’s more to notice! (If that makes sense…). In general, I find new content by looking at our tag pages and I look for posts published the same day I plan to feature them.
I can’t find the Freshly Pressed section anywhere. Where do I find it? And I think I’m following the rules pretty well… maybe I’ll be featured one day =]
Hmm, thats a very good to know thing. Would definitely want my post there.. soon
Thanks for the tips. I always wondered how you went about picking people. I sometimes use “bad words” but not a lot so I guess I’m out. 😦
Great tips – I was lucky enough to get featured last week, and didn’t see it until I got back from my holidays yesterday! Thanks WordPress!
Off-topic, but you know what feature I would like to see? a Print View button. My posts tend to be long, carefully written essays. I have a small readership, but they really like my stuff. If there were a Print View button, then it would be easy for my readers to print out a post of mine that they really liked, without all the sidebars and stuff that also appear on the page. I have wanted to print my own posts from time to time, and this would really be a handy feature.
hm, i do pride myself on my headline-making abilities.
people seem to like my post called ‘peachy’.
it pretty much defines what i do, would love it if you/anyone checked it out.
i will go add the tag now!!
I’ve been doing this several times a week on several blogs, so I’ll just keep waiting until one of them hits the big time!
Good to know this Joy. I think I have passed all the requirements needed to be published on freshly pressed but never got published. I naturally adhere to those rules even before you posted this.
I agree with the positivity / lack-of-hate-speech thing. Around 50% of articles I see in gamer-blogs takes jabs at my favourite of the console companies, Nintendo. They’ll needlessly jeer at Nintendo, its success, its audience, or its business practices in order to get attention from the gaming puclic. It’s like you need to say, “Nintendo sucks” at least 20 times in your page in order to get recognized. I’ve stopped reading and started writing because I’m going to prove otherwise.
I just got started, hopefully I can get featured on Freshly pressed 🙂
WordPress is the best blog hosting service!
As much as I’d love to have my blog featured as “Freshly Pressed”, even without having ever made it yet my blog still gets an average of over 1,500 hits per day.
Why do people always think that images are a good idea? They take a long time to load, eat RAM and often don’t help understanding at all? Seriously, for some areas, they can be good, but IMNSCO the general reliance of pictures in our culture indicates that we movce away from reading and understanding to mindless staring.
I disagree, and consider visual imagery to be just as powerful as words.
I always wondered how Freshly Pressed blog posts were picked — mystery solved! Thank you … and now I am happy to know my blog meets all criteria and with every new post — so fingers crossed!
The blog I help with is for a great cause – an orphanage in Bali – Indonesia, but my ignorance of blogging is our greatest hurdle/ weakness. Help or suggestions from anyone in the WordPress family would be greatly appreciated. A happy weekend to each of you reading this…. -charlie =)
My blog has met these criteria for two years with weekly article numbering, now, 104. Consider this an application, please. PS, I don’t have advertisements in my pages–clutter-free.
Joy ~
Thanks so much for these tips, and for Freshly Pressed, and for making WordPress the perfect home for my blog!
It’s been incredibly exciting to have all the extra traffic visiting Spirit Lights The Way this week!
You rock!
Great post! Thank you for the tips!! Now it’s time to amp up creativity!
Thank you for the tips. I am new to WordPress, but would love to get more clicks at my blog.
Sorry for such a basic question: are tags and categories the same thing? If not, are tags html codes? I can’t find detailed instructions on how to insert tags.
Thank you.
Here you go https://wordpress.com/support/posts/categories-vs-tags/
Thanks for the tips. Makes all that extra ranting I’ve been doing a tiny bit more worth it. I always try to tag, but I sometimes feel like I’m over-tagging. Is there an opinion about this issue? How many are too many? If they’re all relevant, is there still a number that’s considered too many?
Ach sure I’ve been doing those things for 18months now and have only been featured once with a post that was just a video of Pink at the MTV Awards *sob*
Thanks for the info. I may try for it. I’m new to blogging and I’m enjoying it so far.
Based on this, we don’t submit our blog to be selected right? I’d like to get on the list, but I don’t know how you guys would discover my blog. Do I post it in the comments or something?
Thank you for the helpful tips.
