Each weekday, we select about ten new blog posts for the Freshly Pressed section of the WordPress.com homepage. These posts represent how WordPress can be used to entertain, enlighten, or inspire.
Getting promoted to Freshly Pressed is a major traffic win because WordPress.com receives a high volume of page views. And, we have a feed set up so people can subscribe to Freshly Pressed. Why do we do all this? It’s our way of saying we like you. We really like you.
So, by now you might be wondering how to get featured. It’s all about the content. Here are five bits o’ advice that will increase your chances of landing on the homepage:
1. Write unique content that’s free of bad stuff.
Each post that makes it to Freshly Pressed contains original content created by the WordPress user. Bad stuff includes (but isn’t limited to) plagiarism, hate speech, fear-mongering, adult/mature content, improperly used images that belong to someone else, spam or content that is primarily advertorial.
2. Include images or other visuals.
Although not every topic can be illustrated, we believe most blog posts can and should have a visual element. We like original images (meaning, your own), but if you don’t have any of your own and decide to use someone else’s, be sure you properly credit the original source. Video rocks, too. You may get a request from us to add an image before you are promoted to Freshly Pressed — the faster you can respond, the more likely we’ll put your post on the homepage.
3. Add tags.
We find new posts by surfing the tag pages. If you don’t use tags, we can’t find you and how sad would that be? Also, don’t use tags that are too obscure (“beauty tips from the ancient world”) but rather more common tags (“beauty,” “history”).
4. Aim for typo-free content.
We know, we’re human, too — errors happen. We recommend using our Proofreading feature before you hit “publish.” If you’ve got a few typos but we really like your post, we may ask you to fix them. In most cases, we’ll put your post on Freshly Pressed after you’ve made the changes.
5. Cap off your post with a compelling headline.
Your headline needs to stand out. Avoid swear words, excessive punctuation or vague statements. We love a clever headline, and that’s often the reason we click on your article in the first place.
Examples:
Good headline: I Won the Lottery and You Didn’t!
Bad headline: U Loserz, i WON!!!!!11!
Go Forth and Create
So, that’s it! Once you’ve been promoted, you’ll receive an email from us, and you also will notice your page views and comments increasing. Enjoy the ride! You deserve it!
I write in Danish, can I still get on the Freshly Pressed?
i *think* i meet the five requirements so i hope one day my blog will be featured! i’m celebrating my centenary entry by giving away a free gift! cheers everyone! (:
Thanks for the tips. My blog is inspirational, and personal development, so I will try to come up with a cleaver title that catches your attention. I always use tags, so hopefully one of the tags will get your attention as well. I think the world needs more inspiration and positive thinking and less negativity, there is more than enough of that in the world all ready.
I think there should be another section for favorite blogs intended for “mature audiences.” Just because a blog is R rated it should not be eliminated from free press contention! Expletive Yeah!
i’m making it my 2010 goal to be freshly pressed
Too bad my blog is about drug addiction and harm reduction. Otherwise I could possibly get a spot there.
I would definitely consider both those topics for Freshly Pressed. Please see tip #1 again — it does not exclude discussion of important health issues.
I will subscribe and cross my fingers… thanks for the info
You’ll miss me too because I don’t use tags. They’re not aesthetically pleasing and I’ve not found a way to put them in invisibly.
No swear words? Wtf. I won’t be freshly pressed anytime soon.
Swear words in and of themselves are OK, depending on the tone of the piece. It’s just the headline that shouldn’t have them, for this purpose. We have a broad audience reading Freshly Pressed, so we strive to keep it “family friendly.”
Great tips! Thanks! I have a food blog and I guess I need to put more time into writing than just posting the recipe. That reminds me, since I have a food blog, most recipes are not my own but I do specify that. I hope that doesn’t fall under the realm of plagiarism? Should I credit each recipe to my source (to the best of my ability, many are passed down through generations and I have no idea who made them) or does the general “I’m a recipe collector and most of these are not my own creations” cut it?
I think it’s OK to use other’s recipes but yes, crediting is a polite thing to do.
Surely these tips are just the hallmark of any really good blog – and hopefully one day I will be lucky as to be featured!
oooooh fingers crossed! And a question… if I got rid of my wordpress.com domain and bought my own through WordPress, will my blog still be considered?
No, we only featured blogs hosted on WordPress. It’s a technical issue that we can’t feature blogs using WordPress software but hosted elsewhere.
I think i meet them all ! yet i have no comments yet 😦 i have a very helpful fitness blog everyone check it out please im working on becoming a big time personal trainer thanks for all the help and thanks to wordpress!!
Cool info. I guess wordpress isn’t for me, unless I want to sell my soul for some rice.
It is cool though, I like what wordpress features (most of the time).
I’ve got one or two posts that fit that. 🙂 They’re older though. I’ll try to write more.
Bummer, I had to set a wordpress.com URL to comment here, even though my primary blog is set to saskboy.wordpress.com in my user settings. I have a unique URL that forwards to my wordpress blog right now.
I’m blogging -its hilarious!
Pick me! Pick me! No Fo Pa is funny, original, and partly generated by YOU (in the WordPress sense and in the sense that it’s user generated). I guarantee you’ll find SOMETHING to spark a conversation. There’s nothing out there in the blogosphere like it. PICK ME! Peace and thank you.
Thanks for sharing these tips! 🙂
I hope our blog is considered!
Maybe I should cut back on the swearing…
Count us in! I write about our humorous kitchen tales as newly weds. My husband (Mr.) and I (Mrs.) cook and write weekly. This year has been my first attempt at blogging, but I am having a great time. Still have lots to learn (in the kitchen and about blogging!) Thanks wordpress.
no need to be discrete about this.. but..
PICK ME PICK ME
Yes, yes. yes….please put on my blog!!! I’ve never noticed any blogs featured from avatars or secondlife is this a deliberate policy? Not a criticism I just wondered…
Thank you for laying out the important points in order to be featured on the Freshly Pressed. My blog to be featured by someone is my dream. I just started blogging a couple of months ago and those tips are very helpful for me as I am struggling to get readership. I have a lot to learn… Thanks!!
Great tips, thanks!
Well, better get writing while I’m dreaming of all the traffic that could be coming to me
Thanks for the great advice.
Wonderful tips, I do enjoy reading others I may not notice unless you feature them.
Thanks for the tips! I love seeing the new, interesting Freshly Pressed content each week I wouldn’t have normally found otherwise.
Hey Joy,
I don’t have very exciting tagging, nor do I have tons of photos, but I think my blog might be something that readers would value. I’m a 22-year-old guy in New York and I write about my experience with chemotherapy. Sometimes the posts are very funny, sometimes they are serious. But they’re all honest—and I edit them assiduously.
I wondered how this was accomplished. Honest writing is all I do 🙂
Thanks for the advice.
It would be nice to be featured. My word doesn’t generally contain “mature” content or wouldn’t be deemed mature, but some topics are quite serious: such as growing up in Soviet Union orphanages and the understandably difficult after-effects, but in some ways, I’ve observed, choices made are those which “the chooser” might find interesting or “worthy” but not what many readers would themselves select.
I think they should be more diverse in their choices. Many of those shown on “freshly pressed” I have little or no interest in them. The ones which might catch my eye are those from what seems to be primarily “American” english writers who travel to other parts of the world. Conversely, I would prefer to see those like myself, who are not American, or native english speakers writing about our observations and travels to America or western society. Rather an “outsider” view looking in, and we see many things too often taken for granted.
Have had a blog for 4 years….always use photos, original content, add tags, avoid swear words and never write about “bad” things….yet still have never been featured…
pick a winner! let it be me!
Tag instructions are not very user-friendly. Dashboard could be fine-tuned to make tag insertions easier. But maybe I’m just a slow learner…
I’m running a Survivor-style creative writing game on my blog…so to some extent, the appropriateness of the site for consideration is up to the players. Interesting bind that puts me in…
Given past games I’ve run, there would be some R-rated content, but this is a tamer group of players, so we’ll see.
At any rate, thanks for the post, and even more so for having a feature likely Freshly Pressed in the first place.
We’re a private school using Word Press… we do lots of incredible things such as fundraising to build a school in a needy part of India. Hope we can some day be chosen to be featured!
Every bit helps in creating awareness for our blog! Thank you for taking the time to help us out. Now let’s see if you find our stuff compelling. 🙂
Awesome tips. This is really helpful. Thanks for this information…..^_^
Wow. I was featured today and had no idea why. This has shed some light. Thanks so much for the recognition!
I still don’t understand what the selection process involves. Does someone honestly read every new post each day on WordPress.com? Is it possible, given the sheer volume of new posts to choose from, that only the best are selected from each day’s crop? Is it possible that no one more deserving gets passed by or else maybe never noticed?
I like the Freshly Pressed feature because I find good posts on it now and then, but I can also recall what, for me, were duds (that is, not within my interests) – like the time a guy writing about his favorite football team made it, and some make-up/fashion blogs got on there.
I understand lots of people have those interests, and I understand what winds up on Freshly Pressed is hardly limited to those interests…but sometimes I wonder why general appeal/content quality isn’t, overall, pushed a bit higher. Sometimes I wonder if a lot is decided by cross-referencing posts that are already getting a little more notice than usual against the most popular tags on WordPress, and the decisions are then made from there… Sometimes I just wonder… 🙂
But overall, WP team, great work. 🙂
We (mostly I) scan the headlines on most of the major tag pages, several times a day. No, we can’t read every post. A good headline is the first way to get our attention.
STARBOARDPORT would love to be freshly pressed (if you know what we mean)!
We’ve completed all steps, including a major tag overhaul to organize all travel stories by country and city. So we’ll just sit back, sip our juleps and wait our turn…
I’ll do my best to keep posting relevant and informative posts about Technology, Gadgets and related fields. Here’s hoping I can make the cut! Good luck all!!
what if my wordpress is image based? (all images are created by myself though!)
i’m relatively new to wordpress and am trying to get more people to read my stuff as well! 😀
Umm . . . yeah . . . so, I’ve been doing the Five Steps outlined above for 263 days now, i.e., 261 posts (one per day, only two days without a post) and I’ve never been featured on Freshly Pressed. Makes me wonder; maybe only those blogs WordPress staff tend to like pressing get featured? Not that I care to be featured—increased traffic typically means an onslaught of negative commenters. But since you took the time to prep a “To Do” list—I thought I’d take the time to reply. Not really five “ways” to get featured. More like five “prereqs” to getting featured.
Just sayin’ . . . .
Hi, I said: “Here are five bits o’ advice that will increase your chances of landing on the homepage.”
My blog is almost two weeks old, but I’m hoping you’ll give me a try.
Thanks for the great insight into how to both deliver great user content and get WP recognition at the same time.
As a new blogger I hope that as my writing style and content focus mature I’ll be able to deliver on both fronts.
SO how do we submit? I love seeing God in places that no one else does.
I make the requirments too! Check out my Beauty Blog!
Thanks for the tips and I love that you have given us a feed. Looking forward to seeing my blog Freshly Pressed one of these days!
What a pity. Apparently even my comment isn’t good enough to be printed here. Oh well, I guess it was just hate speech.
Let’s try again:
I thought in order to be considered for “Freshly Pressed” all one needed to do was write a good post as determined by the number of views received. I did this last month. Check out: “The Shallowest Generation” at CultureCrusader (approx. 3,000 views in 1 day). But I guess there are other subjective criteria, like whether the post is politically correct enough for the folks at WordPress. So much for a free exchange of creative ideas.
Let’s see if you can summon up the Herculean courage to let this comment be read, Mr./Ms. WordPress.
Hi culturecrusader, sometimes it takes awhile to moderate the many comments coming in, so I’m sorry if we weren’t fast enough to get your comment in. I went ahead and deleted your first comment since you repeated the same comment here.
I do not look at the page views and I do not believe that’s important. Every talented blogger, regardless of the size of their audience, deserves a chance at Freshly Pressed.
And I’d say political correctness doesn’t matter to me either, though I do consider how respectful a post is to differing opinions/cultures/ways of life. You might call that political correctness, I just call that being a nice humanoid.
oohh..Thanks for the tips.
My aim is to one day be on the freshly pressed section 😀
Thanks for the info. I just joined this year and I’ve been wanting to be featured in freshly pressed to generate a LOT of readers and comments. =D
Good to know! 🙂
Thanks that’s interesting stuff.
I’ve had plenty of witty titles that apparently have flown under the radar 😦
Do you ever feature a blogger on Freshly Pressed more than just one time?
Yes, I have, though I’ll probably be doing that less than I have been. Not sure yet.
The five tips are useful… though I’ve been doing most of them most of the time already. Of course, it would be fantastic to be on freshly pressed. Good luck to you and good luck to me.
I will never qualify~ ^_^
Flood of external images.
I can only hope and pray that the wise men and women of the WordPress Politburo deign to consider my poor blog worthy of front page news. Thank you my kind and brave comrades.
If someone (read me) has a memoir blog that is mostly shared with around 60 people..is there any chance of you stumbling upon it? Thanks
Let’s see If i can get featured this time, been writing some good content for a while. Will stick to your five point rule and hope for the best.
thanks for sharing
Those are good tips..much better site than blogger.
In response to one conversation between Joy and a responder–One of the reasons I started a weekly blog was to counter what I feel is a cheapening of public discourse in all forums, including the halls of congress, the general press (print and otherwise) and, especially, the Internet where some people essentially spew their id like children. This is what I say my blog is “about”–
“This Blog: I prefer mutually considerate discussions on ideas, historical events and sometimes on current events. I find ideas in books & periodicals, in music and in travel, among all the sources available to a curious fellow.”
I have published weekly for two years, now changed to bi-weekly. I have achieved a Google pagerank of three and, in the month of April 2010, have averaged over 200 views per day. My best day was over 400, recently.
I have not used unpleasant words, but have not shied away from topics some might consider controversial.
What I have learned in these two years (actually three, because I started with Blogger and changed to WordPress after a year), in addition to what Joy says, is that patience and persistence is required. It takes real work to have a presentable and interesting blog.
Best wishes,
Ron Pavellas

I’m thrilled at the expectation and possibility of being chosen in…Freshly Pressed…..Great motivation !
once i tried this, my hit stats had reached more than 120 000 until now. for me, i think its so impressive. the sad thing is, i dunno how to add ads to my blog.
its awesome if my blog gets noticed, but either way is fine with me (the publicity or no-publicity). i just love blogging on WP is all!
Thanks for the tips! I really appreciate you sharing some pointers on getting to the “front page” and drawing more eyeballs to my fledgling blog. Guess I better create some better headlines. Been told the content is inspiring already.
Thanks again!
it sure will be awesome to be featured….that will be soo cool!
I`d also suggest `regularly update your blog,` the more frequenlty you post, the better chances you have of getting noticed. AND, comment on other people`s blogs. That also makes a difference.
What are the chances a freelance writer with a blog could be highlighted, in the limelight, umm I mean Fresh Pressed, and have her 15 minutes of possible fame?
Very nice tips and interesting to read about. Somebody already mentioned it and I agree, that bloggers should be following some of those tips no matter what. At least so far as livening things up with different media such as pictures and video and podcasts and such.
I’m trying to get there, who knows some day, never lose hope 😉
What about people who just want to get their story out there , maybe they dont have great error free typing , and no headlines or tags. I thought blogging was started for people to use as a journal , to share their life stories and hope to reach others maybe show others they aren’t so alone out there . It seems these days the only way to get attention is to have a blog about random nothingness , beauty supplies .. I mean really is that what people in the world care about now? .. Anyway just my thought lol
Dear Ms. Victory,
Sorry if I was a bit hasty in jumping to the conclusion that my comment had been summarily deleted, when it was only being moderated. And thank you for responding.
However, I am curious as to why page views are not thought of as important to you in determining whether a particular post is worthy of prominence.
Perhaps it is just me, but I would think an otherwise apparently egalitarian organization, such as WordPress, would be more interested in fostering a meritiocracy, rather than a one-woman autocracy, no matter how nice a humanoid that woman happens to be. 🙂

Hi there,
Thanks for these tips! Looking forward to checking out the Freshly Pressed feed and finding some of the awesome blogs out there!
Cheers!
Sounds fair enough,…setting the Standard for the environment. Simple logic applies, just as with SEO guides to get noticed. I think it would be a honor to get “Freshly pressed”, being in such distinguished and multi-national presences online! – hope to get Pressed one day! Namaste!
Crikey, Joy. That must be a LOT of blogs you read! Bless you 🙂
I am probably too nice (or at least my writing is) to get featured on Freshly Pressed 😦
What do you mean, too nice?
Thanks for the tips, I’d hope to think mine makes the cut.
🙂
” U Loserz, i WON!!!!!11!”
You quote it as a bad title, but it might be useful to read a full length post written like that to finally learn that language. After all, WordPress also uses “Howdy” and even “Watcha”……
Thanks for these 5 tips — and for having Freshly Pressed to tell us about fun, inspiring, and interesting posts that are out there. Now, I’ve got to write unique, typo-free, compelling stuff to make the feature!
a fresh eye is always welcome
Thanks Joy!
This is a great aspect of WordPress that we all aspire to be featured on.
Is the location of the author a factor that you look at? In other words, does it matter if an author is not from the US or UK?
Hi Joy, this ia a great feature!
I think we all want to be seen on Freshly Pressed.
Does it matter if an author is not resident in the UK or US?
I have several posts that meet that criteria. But I migrated from blogger to here. So do you have a bot the searches such posts also?
Thanks for the tips on freshly pressed.
No, no bots. Though I do like to think of myself as the JoyBot.
Aside from the lack of pictures (will be changing that soon) my sweet site matches the criteria!!!
thank you for the advice. i hope my blog takes over the world, kthx
What a shame I am only reading about this now after I have completed a Year of Denim, where I wore denim : a top, bottom and accessory every day for the past year.
Maybe my next Year of … will get featured….
what is considered ‘adult/mature’ content?
I do a photoblog where i swear at stuff using my middle finger – but it’s largely harmless and just a bit of fun:
http://www.flipstuffoff.wordpress.com/
So would it never be allowed to be featured on freshly pressed?
Outlook not so good on that one, but maybe the Photography tag page one day? We do feature content on that tag page.
I think I’ve seen some of my stuff on Freshly Pressed, but I’ve never been notified about it…..
We try to notify everyone but some may have fallen through the cracks. One quick way to know is just to check Freshly Pressed! (And if you sign up for the feed, you’ll always know what’s been posted.)
Thanks for the useful tips!
It would indeed be gr8 to be featured on wordpress 🙂
What a great way to expand the readership of interesting blogs! I’m checking out tags and how they work as we speak…
Hi, I got into freshly pressed the second day after moving my blog from typepad to wordpress. At first I had no idea what freshly pressed was, but it was pretty amazing to receive the recognition so early on and have many views that the children I write about deserve. Thank you so much for that!
Sounds like I may have a chance with my latest post. I’m having fun while learning how to use the tools. The sharing of tips in the wordpress community is wonderful.
Thanks
Ok, here’s a question for you.
On my site, I vary from family oriented stuff to political commentary, some NSFW stuff from time to time (not very often as my boss reads it as well as neices and nephews) as well as tech stuff, reviews, etc. Just basically a look into my life as I see things.
I also do a few one line introductions or a few line introductions to forward people to other blogs that I find things.
Because of the NSFW stuff and political commentary stuff, is my site going to be excluded? I know it’s all based on a ‘per article’ basis, but you also stated that you review the site as well.
By the way, I’ve currently got two interesting posts on wings and wing sauce up. 🙂 hint hint hint…
🙂
And do you accept suggestions?
It won’t necessarily be excluded, it just depends on how easy it is to spot the NSFW stuff.
No, no suggestions needed, but thanks. 🙂
And how do I know when I get featured on freshly pressed?
I am asking, because previously one of my posts got significant number of readers all of a sudden. I guess I was just lucky with the tagging and headline, but still it felt good. 🙂
Thanks. These tips have made my goals of self-promotion, acquiring large quantities of cash and eventual world domination seem that much closer to realization..
I guess it won’t hurt to try! : )
