Each weekday, we select about ten new blog posts for the Freshly Pressed section of the WordPress.com homepage. These posts represent how WordPress can be used to entertain, enlighten, or inspire.
Getting promoted to Freshly Pressed is a major traffic win because WordPress.com receives a high volume of page views. And, we have a feed set up so people can subscribe to Freshly Pressed. Why do we do all this? It’s our way of saying we like you. We really like you.
So, by now you might be wondering how to get featured. It’s all about the content. Here are five bits o’ advice that will increase your chances of landing on the homepage:
1. Write unique content that’s free of bad stuff.
Each post that makes it to Freshly Pressed contains original content created by the WordPress user. Bad stuff includes (but isn’t limited to) plagiarism, hate speech, fear-mongering, adult/mature content, improperly used images that belong to someone else, spam or content that is primarily advertorial.
2. Include images or other visuals.
Although not every topic can be illustrated, we believe most blog posts can and should have a visual element. We like original images (meaning, your own), but if you don’t have any of your own and decide to use someone else’s, be sure you properly credit the original source. Video rocks, too. You may get a request from us to add an image before you are promoted to Freshly Pressed — the faster you can respond, the more likely we’ll put your post on the homepage.
3. Add tags.
We find new posts by surfing the tag pages. If you don’t use tags, we can’t find you and how sad would that be? Also, don’t use tags that are too obscure (“beauty tips from the ancient world”) but rather more common tags (“beauty,” “history”).
4. Aim for typo-free content.
We know, we’re human, too — errors happen. We recommend using our Proofreading feature before you hit “publish.” If you’ve got a few typos but we really like your post, we may ask you to fix them. In most cases, we’ll put your post on Freshly Pressed after you’ve made the changes.
5. Cap off your post with a compelling headline.
Your headline needs to stand out. Avoid swear words, excessive punctuation or vague statements. We love a clever headline, and that’s often the reason we click on your article in the first place.
Examples:
Good headline: I Won the Lottery and You Didn’t!
Bad headline: U Loserz, i WON!!!!!11!
Go Forth and Create
So, that’s it! Once you’ve been promoted, you’ll receive an email from us, and you also will notice your page views and comments increasing. Enjoy the ride! You deserve it!
I guess satire belongs under “hate speech” if its good and critical, so freshly pressed is nothin for me 😦
Oh please….who cares. The “Freshly Pressed” posts tend to be incredibly superficial and idiotic. So why even bother sucking up to the WordPress staff? I won’t, that’s for sure…..
Hope to make your featured list soon! I hope “bad stuff” doesn’t include necessary push-back at the nonsense in today’s world.
I regret to see that “advertorial” content is “bad stuff,” but scatalogical words and references are not.
Sounds good. I’m more about my love of things than being a hater.
Does the size of your blog matter? i’ve only had my blog for about a month, does this mean my blog can’t be on freshly pressed until i have a lot of posts?
I fell off my chair in amazement one beautiful August morning in 2009 after creating a post about a talented Morgan horse that paints abstract watercolors. What a thrill to watch your numbers SOAR! I had only been seriously blogging for a few months, in fact, I was such a newbie at the time that I didn’t know about the front page. Of course now I visit it often and love exploring what moves others to write. Thanks ever so much for the honor of being featured on Freshly Pressed! WORDPRESS IS THE BEST!
Thanks for the tips. I hope to be featured someday!
At least now i’ve got something to aspire to 😀
i write a number of blogs, one which contains material you would probably consider ‘bad’ in this context (sex). Do my other clean blogs get disqualified because the pages have links to the ‘bad’ blog?
Thanks so much for the tips. Here’s hoping you’ll notice me–I’m celebrating 30,000 hits ! and am having a photo contest on my blog right
now and would love even more traffic.
Heather 😉
Rules followed, still never get there lol. MEH!
Thanks for the advice! I’m new to the blogging world and can use all the advice I can get.
Pictures? Interesting. I have always tried to have my mini essays paint the visuals for me, but maybe I should rethink the format. …However, in my case, I’m afraid it would rarely enhance the experience. I’ll give that some thought though. Thanks! I, too, would love to be featured some day!
Where’s that old rabbit foot and lucky penny? Maybe mine will be next.
How does it works in languages other than English? My blog is in Portuguese, how do I get “freshly pressed”?
thanks!

sounds interesting – but as my blog is currently photo’s only – I assume I am at a disadvantage to being pressed freshly 🙂 ?
That’s my new goal in life, to get on Freshly Pressed (I wish you could update it on weekends, too). As a former professional news writer and editor, I believe your five tips are right on. They are basically the criteria any good newspaper uses (used to use) to decide what goes on the front page. Except for tags. (But old-timers remember when every story was identified by a one-word “slug,” and reporters or editors knew they could bid for good play on a story by “slugging it to life,” that is, giving it the right slug!)
Personally, I know I’ve been using way too many tags. Writing unique content is no problem for me, but of course too many of my posts are mediocre. Obviously, there’s a lot of competition for that Freshly Pressed page.
Freshly Pressed, here I come!
Is it completely randomly selected or do you have to submit your post/posts some how???? I’m a little confused because wouldn’t it being random mean you’re sifting, some how, through thousands of blogs???
‘Bad’ stuff? Talk about a prejudiced pejorative! While I realize that ‘Adult content’ has been relegated to its own section, referring to it as ‘bad’ implies a bias that speaks as loudly to the narrow view of ‘The Powers’ as it does about the supposed ‘BAAD’ content itself.
Terribly disappointing, even if it’s hardly surprising.
Thanks for the tips! I’ll keep them in mind as I get my travel blog up and running, and hope for the best!
Interesting..I must say i’ve never seen freshly pressed but will have a gander now. I would like to think my blog falls into the realms of the points mentioned, it makes a lot of sense. I’m curious how many blogs there are hosted on wordpress.com vs the amount that have been featured to date, I would imagine a very small number..? Any ideas??
I’ve been a member of Word Press for almost three years and I update my blog every two or three days. I try to provide content that is readable, well-written, spell-checked and tackling subjects a bit more substantial than what kind of hairballs the cat hacked up. Many of the posts I’ve had published on news sites began on my blog. The result? I’ve NEVER been chosen for the Fully Pressed front page.
I have no clue what the person(s) who choose the content for Fully Pressed page are looking for. Apparently, nothing I’ve ever writen.
Hi Joy,
Thanks for taking the time to publish your criteria. I’m new to WordPress and have found it very rewarding.
As with many of my fellow bloggers who have taken the time to write to you, I hope that you have the chance to assess my work. My initial posts have been focused on only one country, however next week I will move on to Barcelona, Chianti, Seattle and Shanghai — wherever my camera and business travels take me next.
Regards,
Liz
What if you are doing all of that and still no dice? Is there someone I can buy a few tunes for their iPod to get consideration? 🙂
I’m starting to feel edgy…my comment is days old and showing “awaiting moderation”, while you’re chatting up everybody after me!?!?! Are the M.I.B. ‘s checking me out, or the CIA for my renegade ideas??? I like making waves, but I promise they’re not tsunamis……really! ….I’m new here, ok
I also do think these 5 advices are a great model on how to blog. Thank you, Joy!
Well I am doing all those things so let’s see what happens
I can testify to all the above! It was such a huge honour to be Freshly Pressed for the first post on my most recent blog; An African’s Queen. I’ve been using WordPress for many years so this came as an overwhelming surprise and brought me a ton of great feedback and comments!
Thanks Joy & the team at WordPress!!!
hmm.. makes me want to review the pictures I’ve put in my blog. need to put them credits. thanks wp. you rock! 😉
I agree with all your suggestions and have applied these as a matter of common sense, it needs to flow and should be compelling. Sometimes life hands you gems and other times rocks, it takes skill to make those rocks interesting enough for others to read. Love wordpress and looking foward to see some of my stuff on Freshly Pressed.:)
someday.. my post will be out there for all to read and take something good from! inshaAllah!!
I don’t use tags, and never will. 😦
What about motherhood blogs? 🙂 Do you only feature blogs that already get a lot of hits or is it purely an interest driven thing? I’m starting to think I’m not using tags too wisely…
Yes, I feature mom blogs all the time. It is not based on traffic, it’s based on how well-written and unique the blog post is.
I write a cooking blog, but can food blogs be shown on freshly pressed?
‘Bad stuff’ is such a general term… does complaining about idiocy fall under ‘bad stuff’? If it does, I guess I’m mostly screwed.
I’m not very good with using images either, but now that you’ve pointed it out, I’ll make an effort to add a picture or two to my posts…
Another thing, how do decide how good (or bad) a headline is? I often think it’s the headline that lets down my posts but I’m not sure.
Thanks for sharing. I love this blogging thing – I finally have a place to share my writings, photo’s and interests.
Joy, Naturally, I’d like to be featured on Freshly Pressed because I write about Kazakhstan, not much is known about this country. I’ve been using WordPress since I started in Kyiv, Ukraine in the spring of 2006 where I had been teaching for 7-8 years. Every day since 2006 makes for a lot of material especially about this little known country of Kazakshtan. Hopefully I’ll get “pressed” one of these days. Thanks for your great work on this blog site!!! Cheers! Kazakhnomad
Thank you for the tips! I just subscribed to Freshly Pressed.
Great tips, Joy! Thank you for sharing them! I’ve always wondered what increases your chances of being featured in Freshly Pressed. I don’t normally use photos but other than that I think I have a strong blog and am hopeful it will continue to grow! Have a great day!
My blog is in English but my titles are in French (because I am posting about that particular French phrase, commenting on it, providing a translation and an audio file). I cover everything from idioms to tonguetwisters to poetry. Do I stand a chance at Freshly Pressed? If not, can you tell me what I need to do to catch your eye? I think I am within your tips and guidelines, except for the French titles. Thank you!
I would LOVE to be featured on Freshly Pressed! It would be an honor. Peace & painlessness to all.
Joy, thank you. I think I get it. Anyway, I’ve tried.
Wrinkled San Francisco Novelist Freshly Pressed
How is that for a headline? LOL
A girl can dream…thanks for the guidance!
Scribbling Dame
I guess I better get lucky soon!
Thanks so much! I always wondered how blogs were featured there. Hopefully, I’ll be on the homepage one day.

… But hey, it’s just that there are such great pictures available all over the place, and I’m not making money off them, so why would people mind?”
As an artist and photographer, I am glad wordpress is encouraging bloggers to quit using other people’s work without permission–even if it is not done to make a profit. They are MY images I worked hard to create them and own the right to say how they are used. each and every post states that all images and text are my intellectual property and not to copy etc; yet, I am frequently having to deal with people copying an re-posting my work in it’s entirety without either permission or credit given. This often looks like either they are the artist/photographer, or that i endorse their blog–neither of which are true. It is hard enough to make one’s way in the world as an artist and photographer, without people stealing my work. it IS stealing, and it IS against the law. And YES WE MIND.
Thank you wordpress for encouraging those who use more ethical blogging practices. I also appreciate as a parent that you do NOT promote adult/mature material to the Freshly Pressed where it might be viewed by minors.
I’d like to get featured. I blog about engineering and life.
Ok. I tagged it, gave it a punchy title, and used only original pictures. I have posted tons of times in the last two years, and still have not made the cut.
thank you so much for posting this. I have been a regular at Freshly Pressed. Recently opened a blog roll for myself and going through the initial motions on maintaining a consistency in the posts.
Great writing, original photos, living the dream in Whistler…check it out people! (Just in case you don’t pick me for Freshly Pressed)
Cheers!
Hi
I hope one day I make it to Freshly Pressed, too! Until then, my blog has a fan page on Facebook and people have enjoyed spreading the word about The World According To Max that way as well. Also a great way to let fans know about blog updates! Keep up the great work, Joy!
I agree with what some people have said. Why is mature content “bad stuff?” Life is full of swearing, sex, and serious issues. These are not “bad things.” They’re reality. Check out my blog if you’re interested in the environment–more specifically, the reality of the eco-catastrophe that is industrial civilization, and ways we might go about saving the planet and ourselves from it.
I did not mean that mature content is bad in general. I meant it’s “bad” for the broad audience that comes to the WordPress.com homepage, such as minors and people of deep religious faith, etc. We have to keep it pretty PG on the homepage.
Pick me! Pick me!
Or don’t.
Whatever, really. I’m just here for the free prozac.
It is a dream for every writer to get published . . .
A dream for every blogger to get featured
And I understand why.
This is way too cool!
I wish you well.
~ Jeques
I guess I won’t get on “Fully Pressed” either as no such page exists, so please excuse the malaprop. Otherwise, the crux of my comment remains the same. Freshly Pressed is a no-fly zone for me. I use tags. I don’t use too many bad words. I run the spell-check and I try to mix it up. But after almost three years, I got nothing. .
Thanks for the info. My blog certainly meets the criteria and has very timely information right now. Hope to see it there.
Thanks for the information! The advice is logical….hope you will like to read my blog one day. There are some really great blogs here on WordPress.
i started my blog a year ago , but it’s only this past 3 month’s that i have started to build it with the expert’s help and i love doing it as i’m now retired. but it’s a blog i do not think you would put into Freshly Pressed 😦 . all the best , harry
If brevity were the soul of wit,
Then sadly your shy poem is not it.
Whilst you bend to the whims of that Wordy Press
With your own daft words you deign but to impress,
And what are your true thoughts is anyone’s guess.
One ought rather to speak only from the heart
Even though one’s words might impart
A thought or two that might give a start.
But I wish you luck with your blogging plight.
And remember never to give up the fight!
Thanks for the heads up … I didn’t know adding tags got you more traffic … have to try that out.
Sorry, the tipps are very poor. Every school child learns those basics in third class shortly after the writing lessons…
I’m sorry you feel that way.
Joy Victory ,
This is a very well written guide to getting “Featured on Freshly Pressed”
I will do my best to follow your instructions and I will get some more views to my blog soon!
Thank you,
-M.Parker
I am a Survivor of The Serpents Sting. Pick Me! I need to get my story out for all to see there is hope, there is Sobriety at the end of a Long Long Journey to Sobriety. These entry hide nothing, it is the bare facts of one womans struggles to conquer a killer disease called Addiction. Drugs started the battle, but I Won the War!!!!
Hmm. How to promote my blog. Well, I’ve been live for less than 2 weeks and got 800+ hits on my article about crime in South Africa in the last 6 hours, which is very relevant considering World Cup is coming soon. All photos are my own too! yay! Hope you check it out!
Yep, because you are on Freshly Pressed today. Nice post, btw.
Well, I follow pretty much all these rules (besides the pictures due to the nature of my writing) but after a full year of blogging have never been featured. Is it because I write about religious stuff and the majority of your readers are left leaning non-religious people? Just curious.
I see you are still “moderating” my previous comment (copy below). Or did you just forget about me?
Dear Ms. Victory,
Sorry if I was a bit hasty in jumping to the conclusion that my comment had been summarily deleted, when it was only being moderated. And thank you for responding.
However, I am curious as to why page views are not thought of as important to you in determining whether a particular post is worthy of prominence.
Perhaps it is just me, but I would think an otherwise apparently egalitarian organization, such as WordPress, would be more interested in fostering a meritiocracy, rather than a one-woman autocracy, no matter how nice a humanoid that woman happens to be.

Thanks for the information. Just recently started blogging; it’s so helpful to have some tips. (-:
How about a story on Cerebral Palsy; It’s a black and white photo essay project he’s been working on for the past 7 weeks. Cameronleehutton.com
I know shameless plug; but I feel this story that should be told, and I think he did well.
ooooooh the pressure! Thanks WP!
Does it matter how long a blog has been around? Mine is new. Does that matter? Thank you for your post.
How will i know if i ave been Freshly Pressed? I had a really high traffic day out of nowhere a couple of weeks ago. Thank you again.
Thanks for the tips, it looks like I’m heading in the right direction with over 200 original hdr pics on my blog. I figure since I’m in it for the long haul, I’ll eventually get noticed by Freshly Pressed!
Hi Joy, great advice, thank you. Was glad to hear, as you mentioned above – that the chosen ones are not necessarily based on traffic – more on quality content – and that there is hope for the newbie blogger!
Hi Joy
I trust, my latest blog entry “What is your favorite quote? And Why” will qualify for the freshmint.
It is a truly collaborative effort, where in I created an ebook of quotes and perspectives contributed by over 500 fellow networkers and have kept it for free download.
I request you to visit the same and do the needful in getting this inspiring initiative its due recognition by featuring it on the “freshly minted” platform
Best Personal Regards

Scatterbrained Scribblings
Hmm, most factual news blogs and many financial and health blogs could be considered “fear mongering”… Do we have to avoid talking about reality to fit your criteria ?
Good to know the Automattic bots that create the tag pages are not responsible for the featured posts.
I think you are doing an excellent job selecting featured posts.
I’m new to the game, so this was very helpful. Hopefully with TAGS, I’ll go from ZERO hits to at least ONE hit. hahah
Great idea and what a wonderful way to promote us. Looking forward to getting featured on Freshly Pressed… Danke!
I would love to be featured on fresh pressed. but sadly, my blog often features content that is disturbing politically.
and how sad that a political voice should be muted or silenced because such a great place as wordpress seeks to be “pc”.
very sad.
maybe you should try a feature called Mad Pressed? for angry, volatile arguing and name calling.
wait.
sorry. that is my blog.
great guidance, thanks, i am doing everything you have suggested, so just need to add “freshly pressed” tag and bingo! a featuring will follow!
Thank you for the wonderful advice. My blog is called “Up!” and is all about improving our lives as a species and reaching for the stars. I would love to be featured on freshly pressed as I have a good batch of articles coming up. Good advice about the tags btw, it never occurred to me before:)
Alas… I don’t think my Fictional Blog is likely to be all that freshly pressed worthy. These tips are interesting, but I’m not sure that structured fiction is what these guys are all about, which isn’t a criticism, just and observation.
In all seriousness, there’s so few good fictional blogs out there, that I’m finding it hard to find inspiration myself on how to do it well.
One day I will featured….. One day…..
Thanks for the tips. My goal is to be freshly pressed! I’m already a grammer nerd, so that should help. I blog about health and wellness most of the time, and do a witty (I hope) satire on Fridays. Check out Satire Friday: Two Tired, for example.
Wish me luck!
That sounds fantastic. But i believe I have qualified for those for most of my posts. Still given the amount of blogs out there, i’d still look at this as something of a raffle draw. :p
Sounds like an awesome promotional and great press for everyone. I sure could use the trafficbecause sometimes I wonder if anyone knows my blog exists. The “hits” can be few and far between. =]
Would love to be featured someday – thanks for the tips!
Joy this was very helpful, aspiring to make Freshly Pressed one day soon. Thanks!
Thanks for the tips. I am new to blogging and am excited to learn all I can about it.
So we can’t self-nominate. You have to find us. Search high & low!
thanx for sharing this iformation… 🙂
in some global tags[like technology, music etc.] there are thousands of recent posts…..so do you’ll see many of the posts or some of them and choose 1 or 2..???
i have a technology blog…so i think it’s very difficult to even be seen by wordpress for featuring between so many posts……am i right??
will niche blogs be able to qualify??
Oooh! Thank you for the advice! I feel like I need to brush up on my tagging skills! 🙂
I hope that doesn’t exclude controversial topics!
yeah, i’m pretty sure i’ll never be featured. i hardly upload images (the content doesn’t really lend to it) and my topics are, well, too heavy for the average reader regardless of how light i try to keep things.
all in all freshly pressed is a great idea. keep up the great work!
