Each weekday, we select about ten new blog posts for the Freshly Pressed section of the WordPress.com homepage. These posts represent how WordPress can be used to entertain, enlighten, or inspire.
Getting promoted to Freshly Pressed is a major traffic win because WordPress.com receives a high volume of page views. And, we have a feed set up so people can subscribe to Freshly Pressed. Why do we do all this? It’s our way of saying we like you. We really like you.
So, by now you might be wondering how to get featured. It’s all about the content. Here are five bits o’ advice that will increase your chances of landing on the homepage:
1. Write unique content that’s free of bad stuff.
Each post that makes it to Freshly Pressed contains original content created by the WordPress user. Bad stuff includes (but isn’t limited to) plagiarism, hate speech, fear-mongering, adult/mature content, improperly used images that belong to someone else, spam or content that is primarily advertorial.
2. Include images or other visuals.
Although not every topic can be illustrated, we believe most blog posts can and should have a visual element. We like original images (meaning, your own), but if you don’t have any of your own and decide to use someone else’s, be sure you properly credit the original source. Video rocks, too. You may get a request from us to add an image before you are promoted to Freshly Pressed — the faster you can respond, the more likely we’ll put your post on the homepage.
3. Add tags.
We find new posts by surfing the tag pages. If you don’t use tags, we can’t find you and how sad would that be? Also, don’t use tags that are too obscure (“beauty tips from the ancient world”) but rather more common tags (“beauty,” “history”).
4. Aim for typo-free content.
We know, we’re human, too — errors happen. We recommend using our Proofreading feature before you hit “publish.” If you’ve got a few typos but we really like your post, we may ask you to fix them. In most cases, we’ll put your post on Freshly Pressed after you’ve made the changes.
5. Cap off your post with a compelling headline.
Your headline needs to stand out. Avoid swear words, excessive punctuation or vague statements. We love a clever headline, and that’s often the reason we click on your article in the first place.
Examples:
Good headline: I Won the Lottery and You Didn’t!
Bad headline: U Loserz, i WON!!!!!11!
Go Forth and Create
So, that’s it! Once you’ve been promoted, you’ll receive an email from us, and you also will notice your page views and comments increasing. Enjoy the ride! You deserve it!
Joy, I do a blog about innovation in business and education, but the coolest posts are ones by guest bloggers I have on like congressmen, teachers, and entrepreneurs. Because its a post not written by me, would I still be in the running?
Well I was going to ask for your phone number Joy, but I see that you’re married. 😦 (Will flattery help me get Freshly Pressed?)
What if you use Categories instead of Tags??
Hi, Joy, What a cute pic of you — and the blue necklace is a great match with your hair. Thanks for these instructions. I’ll keep them in mind as I continue my fun journey at WordPress!
Must be nice to get featured on freshly pressed. I’ll try my best.
Pick Me! Pick Me! 😉
Can’t wait to be Featured! We represent a unique lifestyle as baby boomers – living the dream!
Sounds like a conformity-inducing incentive.
Now I know it is up to you to decide what is featured but I would like to make a small request.
In light of Mental Illness Awareness Week, I would like to promote this post: blackvictoria.wordpress.com/2010/05/04/mental-illness-awareness-week/
As someone who suffers from depression and anxiety, I’ve found that even that one post has managed to help several of my friends and hope that it will reach a wider audience.
However, it is your choice. 🙂
Victoria Black.
Is there an ‘age’-limit? We just celebrated our 1-year anniversary on WordPress.
I post my funny postings to Craigslist on my WordPress blog. Is there any way for us to submit postings to WordPress for consideration, ours and others?
This is great, Joy. Thanks for the work, you and your colleagues put into this. How much do I love WordPress right now?
I think I’ve put most of the tips you suggested into action, so it looks like I’m going in the right direction. I’ve always had the thought that one day, when the time and the post is right, I’ll feature on the freshly pressed page. I’ll keep writing in the meantime, in anticipation of winning the bloggers equivalent of Willie Wonka’s golden ticket.
do you only look at new posts? Or if I go back and put a fresh face on older ones and update, could they be selected too?
Thanks for the info…didn’t know you had something like this.
Forget freshly pressed, can I get WordPress to recognize my youtube embeds again?
Hi, pls check out my new blog. I’m a cinematographer with a few documentaries and articles posted. Thanks!
waaa laaa something to strive for – thank you, and for the helpful advice… Give me two months!!!
whistlerheather / whistlerbuzz
Great article, thanks for the tips!
“Freshly Pressed” is great! I’ve found lots of new blogs I probably would have never seen because of it!
Can you do an article on how to get any hits at all? I’ve gotten zero hits since I’ve started. Feels like highschool all over again!
It’s really wonderful you actually have standards and look for quality work. Kind regards, Therese Waddell
My blogs been going for a month & already getting a good following. Havnt used images yet so might well give that a go thankyou. Its original, enthralling stuff, check it out as would love to be featured. cheers Pete
Great. Now I’m just writing her so someone notices me and clicks on my nick and go to my blog.
@Joy Victory
I suggest you, at some point, post an article about how to correctly attribute images. Also quotes, maybe…
I blog about designers and artists. What am I free to do with “Press Downloads” off the artist’s site?
And, thanks for this post. I think the 5 are general guidelines for writing, wether you want to be featured or not. 🙂
We’re supposed to write decent headlines and yet you write:
“Write unique content that’s free of bad stuff.”
Hmmm.
well, am just starting out, i seek to connect with other people since we are all so unique, So watch this space….( i like the tips as well)
Great! I just used these tips with my latest post. It makes sense to properly credit photo sources.
I’m so silly- just realised the answer to my question is on the front page! There are 279,565 blogs on WP and 11 spots for the freshly pressed feature… So despite a blogger doing all five useful tips, the likelihood of being featured is quite small no doubt.
Regardless, adopting the 5 points is always good. I go out of my mind when I see blogs written poorly!

Five Reasons You Should Freshly Press Me
1) Last year, at age 33, I bought a second-hand Winnebago and took my wife and 8 week old baby on a lap around Australia for five months. Just to prove we didn’t die in the outback, I did a blog so my family and friends could see that little Erik was okay. I thought it was a pretty original thing to do (the blog, let alone taking a baby into the outback), but when we were in Alice Springs (middle of Australia) every second camper was on a laptop!
2) I took awesome original photos the whole trip and posted several every day. How do you make photos awesome, crop them to 900×300 pixels and they are now panorama! (ooooh).
3) I’ve learnt my lesson and will now use tags so that I can get freshly pressed.
4) I’ve never made a typo in my lief!
5) My titles were factual (boring) so instead of ‘http://eriksfjord.wordpress.com/2009/10/30/076-explore-west-kimberley-wa-370km-12987km/’ I’m also going to use titles like ‘crazy aussie dad takes baby into underwater crocodile infested cave’ because that’s what I actually did! Then I’ll retitle ‘http://eriksfjord.wordpress.com/2009/11/12/089-explore-ningaloo-reef-29km-15559km/’ in ‘crazy aussie dad and mum swim baby into open shark infested coral reef’ because we actually did that too!
Don’t think we were put off travelling just coz we came back after 5 months, we’re expecting another baby and this time will take two years and head off with our 4 week old baby and 18 month old.
Hi Joy
You mentioned that only English blogs have a chance. What about bilingual blogs. I blog in English as the Main blog but translate within the same blog post in German for my European friends to read it without them figuring it out how to translate all.
I find the comments and feedback on this site very helpful and perhaps one day I will be honoured to be the “Freshly Pressed” blog too.
Happy blogging to all
Jacqueline
Hi, check out my blog about the Greenpeace Arctic Meltdown Expedition from when I had joined the Arctic Sunrise on a 3 month tour documenting the impacts of climate change in the high latitudes. A number of video blogs featured in the article! Thanks!
Thanks for the info! Are photo blogs included?
I switched to wordpress due to it’s look and versatility about content, I blog about our travels in the USA and anything else that suits my fancy, I would like to be featured, If I send you a check, how much and to whom should the check be made out to? Thanks Brian
please consider choosing a post about the flooding here in nashville, tn.
we are having a hard time getting the long lived attention we’ll need to fully recover.
thanks so much!
It doesn’t give any clear instructions after all. So there’s no secret? Well, I have to cross my fingers then.
Thanks for the tips. I will keep typing away with the secret desire to be Freshly Pressed someday.
Okay! I’m excited lets see what I can come up with!
Me, me! Pick meeeeeee!! *jumps up and down with hand in the air, almost dislocates shoulder in the effort to put hand up higher than the rest of the class*
I really enjoy reading the Freshly Pressed posts each day – it’s fascinating to see who’s out there and what’s preoccupying them all. I try to comment often as well. Come on, you all know what a boost it is to see that someone (a stranger! someone who doesn’t even have to!) has read what you’ve written.
Wow-wah-wee-wah….So lets say my you guys over there in wonderland choose my blog(like thats ever gonna happen 🙂 ), do i maybe win a prize? like a teddy bear(hahaha) or a case of beer.
I mean you gotta let a person know what the rewards are for such a huge amount of effort.
just saying
Lykhuis out
I was wondering what I did to get ‘pressed’. Good to know…. Don’t think I can top that amount of traffic again, it was ceraaaazy! Thanks guys!
I want in on “Freshly Pressed”!
I appreciate these tips, though I’m a little disappointed by how general they are. I think most serious bloggers do all of the things you mentioned and they never get featured on Freshly Pressed. I’ve read some fabulous stuff there, and I’ve read some pretty mediocre stuff there–stuff that lures you in with an “attention grabbing headline” that has nothing to do with the actual post, stuff that isn’t too unique, etc. I really love WordPress, the community, the tech support, the updates, the writing, etc. But I actually do all of the things on this list of tips in my blog, and don’t rate my chances of getting featured on “Freshly Pressed” too highly because of them. Thanks for the info, though.
Is teen pregnancy considered adult content? I know it is a bit of a touchy subject so I’m not sure where that would fit in. I noticed it isn’t included in the tags so chances are slim that I would be featured, but I’m still curious.
O_O Holy crap! You Pressed me?! I was SO not expecting that. Thank you!
Fantastic Idea! I am looking forward to trying and making it on the Freshly Pressed.
Thousands of bloggers are doing that. It didn’t get us any closer how to increase our chances.
Since my blog is relatively new, are you looking for a large archive of content behind the blogs you select? Thanks!
I think my blog meets the requirements…..hint, hint, wink, wink. =)
Thanks for the information Joy, I didn’t know about “Freshly Pressed” and will be sure to check it out.
Lisa
I will try as hard as I can to get featured! Thanks for the tips! 🙂
great, useful post! does the number of outgoing links make a difference?
Dear Joy,
I was wondering if there is a suggested post-length that you find most accessible and readable? Thanks for your advice.
So I write a creative-writing post every night of what it means to be a first year dad. I meet every criteria above but one: I don’t use tags. Tags are clutter. I use categories as tags instead… but that means I cannot be Freshly Pressed and many people miss out on what America often decries: a dad intimately and creatively involved in the life of his son. 😉
Very informative 🙂
What a wonderful idea!!….but I think I am not ready for it….I have too many things to do on my hands right now…but I look forward for a chance to participate!! Bella
Thanks for the tips!
Durn, “fear-mongering” is my forte.
Hi Joy: Thanks for the tips. I too have a blog that is mostly pictures as that is the idea behind the blog. I also suppose that i am tagging incorrectly as I see that the tagging is so that others with similar needs can find my blog without actually knowing it exists in the first place.
Is there a tutorial that will tell me how I can maximize my WP blog?
Thanks.
I would have preferred being selected based on my content….and not my “fancy features”. Fancy features are distractions from issues, and politicians employ those techniques to get “popularly” elected. Okay, so I won’t be popular enough for listing in that area….but many will hear what I have to say nonetheless….so it really doesn’t matter….I’m not that vain! 🙂
In your example of a good headline vs a bad headline, both are bad headlines, but the one listed as bad is at least one that could make people curious.
I Didn’t Really Get It Will You Explain It A little More Clearly To Me?
OK…So remove the fear-mongering hate talking garbage and replace it with rocking videos. Tag like I’ve never tagged before, learn how to speel and top it all off by winning the lottery?!
No problem Joy 🙂 Cheers for the advice!
wow! it is for real then! thought I was the only one reading my own blog. LOL
Joy-thanks for the great advice! It seems to me that an inspiring blog about a father, his son, and the hilarity that ensues as they journey together would be great for freshly pressed-hmm, I think Brew City Dad does just that:)
In all seriousness, thank you (Brew City Dad) for the tips.
Great opportunities to be featured! Thanks for the information.
Thanks WordPress.com. Thanks Joy! This is a wonderful guideline to refreshing future writings or press publishing opportunities. Freshly Pressed is a great way to support writers of all genres. I’m sure future journalists and writers will be more eager to freshly press their new ideas- with anticipation of being featured and promoted on Freshly Pressed section on Word Press.com- and press with better tags and personal images. Always, site your source… And remember to always think new and fresh. Ideas are brighter when things are fresh! And, great advice on adding more tags. Tags can be a great eye catchers and a great way to link onto more information. Thanks again for the advice …Pleasant M.W./girlpure 05/05/10
I dream of one day being freshly pressed!
This seems pretty cool, i still have a lot to learn/discover about wordpress! 🙂
Cheers for the info!
I want to be featured! My blog is about being a celibate and free spirited African American female. A couple of posts are mildly graphic but not to the point of “OMG”. I’ll guess I’ll put being featured on my bucket list. A girl can dream. 🙂
Thanks for the info! I was wondering if those were random or what……….
Of course, it would be nice to be featured on Freshly Pressed, but video does not fit within the scope of my blog. The tags I have in abundance, and I daresay I have some of the best titles. (They make me laugh, anyway.) I write compellingly, my themes are universal, and the content is entirely original. I’d love to have more readers, but I can’t compromise my standards for what amounts to eye candy. I’d like to see a more democratic (i.e., random) selection of freshly pressed blog submissions. I believe that would widen the scope of what people read and help the more obscure but just as deserving writers get discovered.
I guess I gotta clean my post up? I am still posting early content though. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks! Really appreciate the advice! 🙂
Common sense advise… so commonly overlooked.
CBF
Hmm, I think I’ll never be Freshly Pressed because I only put images in my posts, I rarely have anything to say…
Thanks so much for the information! I write a fashion blog so you may come across mine soon as it gets more popular!
Hopefully I don’t sound stupid in saying this, but does one have to submit a post to be considered?
I’m ready for my Freshly Pressed blog now…Ok…hmm…where is it?
wow… thanks for the tips 😀
hmm… so i must add english articles in my blog.. or maybe add new blog in wordpress
A post from the pop culture blog – I Fry Mine in Butter – was a Fresh Pressed selection. Great fun. My mothership blog, however, probably won’t. I’m naughty and frankly, not particularly interested in being anything else. Dumbing/blanding down my content isn’t my thing. There are better ways to generate site traffic, though I love the idea of Fresh Pressed for those who meet its standards.
What happened to the Top 100 blogs of the day? I was able to discover new blogs that way.
then i am already in!! no, really.
These are some great tips, not only to get featured on Freshly Pressed, but also just to increase traffic to your blog in general. I used to have a Blogger account and switched to Word Press – for many reasons – one of which was the Freshly Pressed feature, and their willingness and ability to help fellow bloggers get a piece of the lime light.
Thank you Word Press Team, you rock 🙂
How do we get your attention to take a look at a blog that is primarily visual?
With comments embedded in the photos! to create a minimalist look
Do we just wait and hope you will pop in?
“Write unique content that’s free of bad stuff.”
200 photos on one big building in cape town = specific!
As it is only a few months old hits low, google not picking it up yet!
Catch 22?
Hi Joy,
Thanks for the very useful tips. I would love to be featured, and I think I follow most of your tips already, so just have to keep working on it!
The other useful thing I found is to read some of those featured posts, so you know your benchmark in terms of quality of writing, style, images, grammar and syntax, originality of content etc.
I hope I would be considered someday 🙂
Cheers!
Vasu
what about mulit-lingual blogs? like english and another language? and what about if we use free clip art but keep the credit on the pic????
I wrote about my experience as a wannabe cowgirl for a day, “A city girl learns a thing or two about wild horses”. Even if it doesn’t get selected, I welcome other bloggers to visit and say howdy. Thanks!
Thanks, I wondered how you chose the ones that were up there! I hope mine gets chosen someday! I would really like to wake up to that! Happy Blogging everyone.
hi Joy,
thanks for the nice tips!
freshly pressed features only english-written blogs?
sofia
Thanks for the tips! I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
I love your article, it’s inspired me. Thanks 🙂
my blog once made it to Freshly Pressed – it was a great experience. Hope I could make it there more often…
As a new blogger, this is very helpful to know. Thank you. Getting the word out about useful information is what it’s all about!
I want to be freshly pressed!
Great info! But it looks like I will never be on this “freshly pressed” thing, I’m just a tad bit raw….*shrugs shoulders*. Maybe one day I will clean it up a lil bit…maybe 😉
Well, 115 posts and most the past few months should meet your criteria. I’ll get there some day. That’s OK, I’m patient.
Sounds like a great idea and the guidelines seem fair and easy to understand.
Is artisitic body paint considered “bad stuff”?
Hi Joy, I have a few questions please… (I apologise in advance if they are silly questions, I’m just alarmingly non-technical)
I posted a comment here on May 02 at 7.51 am , and I see that it’s still marked ” waiting moderation” …??? Does that mean I did something wrong in my comment please?
Secondly… you posted a comment (quoted below)

We (mostly I) scan the headlines on most of the major tag pages, several times a day. No, we can’t read every post. A good headline is the first way to get our attention.
———————–
May I ask what is a “major tag page” please ?
Also, I post at 1.00 am, and set all my posts to post at this time, (even though I’m normally well and truly tucked up in bed by then It suits my schedule) … So my third silly question of the day: if hundreds of thousands of posts are being posted each day, and mine posts when most of North America is sleeping, how is it possible you will ever see my posts?
Thanks for being so patient to answer all of my ( and everyone else’s questions)
regards.. kiwidutch 🙂
It expressed the obvious really.
Wow! Very helpful tips! Thank you 😛
