Each weekday, we select about ten new blog posts for the Freshly Pressed section of the WordPress.com homepage. These posts represent how WordPress can be used to entertain, enlighten, or inspire.
Getting promoted to Freshly Pressed is a major traffic win because WordPress.com receives a high volume of page views. And, we have a feed set up so people can subscribe to Freshly Pressed. Why do we do all this? It’s our way of saying we like you. We really like you.
So, by now you might be wondering how to get featured. It’s all about the content. Here are five bits o’ advice that will increase your chances of landing on the homepage:
1. Write unique content that’s free of bad stuff.
Each post that makes it to Freshly Pressed contains original content created by the WordPress user. Bad stuff includes (but isn’t limited to) plagiarism, hate speech, fear-mongering, adult/mature content, improperly used images that belong to someone else, spam or content that is primarily advertorial.
2. Include images or other visuals.
Although not every topic can be illustrated, we believe most blog posts can and should have a visual element. We like original images (meaning, your own), but if you don’t have any of your own and decide to use someone else’s, be sure you properly credit the original source. Video rocks, too. You may get a request from us to add an image before you are promoted to Freshly Pressed — the faster you can respond, the more likely we’ll put your post on the homepage.
3. Add tags.
We find new posts by surfing the tag pages. If you don’t use tags, we can’t find you and how sad would that be? Also, don’t use tags that are too obscure (“beauty tips from the ancient world”) but rather more common tags (“beauty,” “history”).
4. Aim for typo-free content.
We know, we’re human, too — errors happen. We recommend using our Proofreading feature before you hit “publish.” If you’ve got a few typos but we really like your post, we may ask you to fix them. In most cases, we’ll put your post on Freshly Pressed after you’ve made the changes.
5. Cap off your post with a compelling headline.
Your headline needs to stand out. Avoid swear words, excessive punctuation or vague statements. We love a clever headline, and that’s often the reason we click on your article in the first place.
Examples:
Good headline: I Won the Lottery and You Didn’t!
Bad headline: U Loserz, i WON!!!!!11!
Go Forth and Create
So, that’s it! Once you’ve been promoted, you’ll receive an email from us, and you also will notice your page views and comments increasing. Enjoy the ride! You deserve it!
Great info, thanks! Less cursing, more images, done.
Thanks for the great tips! We hope to see our site on the front page some day, that would be amazing!
“Bad stuff includes (but isn’t limited to) plagiarism, hate speech, fear-mongering, adult/mature content, improperly used images that belong to someone else, spam or content that is primarily advertorial.”
Ok, now that you’ve eliminated 99% of what people would want to read, how is this going to attract someone to my blog?
“Hate Speech” is an awfully relative term that, these days, covers anything some bedwetter doesn’t like, as does the term “fear-mongering.”
And no, I’m pretty sure no one out there is going to have a buring desire to read my thoughts on Hikus concerning small dogs (which is all anyone will be left with after the conditionals placed on content).
I doubt that a poetry blog will make the cut (:0]
I have a wonderful blog with all the above elements, and I never got noticed… Luck of the dice I guess
I always find interesting content on Freshly Pressed. Good lookin’ out!
What about “pages”? They aren’t post. Do they get considered as well?
Great tips! Thanks for the support. WordPress rocks!
Not sure if I would qualify, my personal struggles might not be that interesting haha. question: my titles are always “week 6, day3” etc as it goes along with the whole reason i created a blog (found out i’m pregnant!), probably not the most catchy huh? maybe i’ll start adding a little line after like “week 10, day 6: say hello to the unemployed” (yes that is basically my last post haha). just thinking out loud now.
I am quite impress with this sites especially for me as a beginner..hopefully, I could be able to post something which is unique..thank you for that information.
Sounds like Freshly ‘Pressed’ Orange juice…hello wordpress, am a freshie here
Dearest Joy, Blogmistress Extraordinaire– I dare you to visit my blog…however, do typo-free zones qualify as adult-only? Thanks for making this ever more usable…
Uhhhh… good spelling, be readable, no obscenity, use multimedia, avoid controversy. Except for multimedia, these are the same principles for publishing supermarket giveaways.
Can you spell “insipid?”
Why must featured blogs be at a reading level for Cub Scouts?
Thanks for the information. What about photography blogs? I usually add content to give context or try to inform/create debate (or amuse) with photo posts, so I wonder if that will catch your eye. Or, should the photos not be the central focus?
Thanks for the information, hopefully one day I will be able to be selected…
ok, well – seems doable – need to sort my pics out then methinks and check off all five points nice a neatly. Cos I like it that way.
Thanks for the tips!
Why not have multiple categories of “Freshly Pressed” so that more blogs could be promoted concurrently? How about “Freshly Pressed Lifestyle Blogs”, “Freshly Pressed Cooking Blogs”, etc.??
This past Monday I checked the stats for my blog here on WordPress. They had spiked a bit higher than normal. I did a bit of research. It turned out my blog had been selected for a spot in “Today’s Featured Posts” on the Photography tag page. Very cool. The viewing numbers continued to climb throughout the day. I then discovered that my blog had also made it onto the “Freshly Pressed” page. Wow! Yes, it does increase your traffic and yes, it does make your day. I had just read these tips the week before but I suspect it was the photos I had taken on a perfect spring day that caught the attention of the editor. I’m looking forward to being featured again. 😀
On my blog , I have to asess whether or not what I have posted has been posted honourably , or dishonourably. There is no questioning of whether or not the headline itself is good or bad – the point lies with the content. For example – being national socialist makes me very rarely post comments where my own views on national socialism are expressed. I also advise other persons to refrain from repeating any of my mistakes. The web pages I visit that belong to wordpress.com , usually never discuss whether the material was posted in good or bad ´manners´. We try to be as honest , open – hearted (vs open – minded) , and clear – minded as possible. Of course , there are occasions when we fail in meeting with those endeavours. My journals are all hand – written and are now nearly 7 in number – two of them are set to be a western in two parts because they deal with the Icelandic highlands. I think that all bloggers must decide on their own terms whether what they posted had been posted honourably and dishonourably. Because I am more inclined towards considering such things as personal honour and trying to strieve to understand what that means , rather than keeping my writing style in good or bad format based on what other people may think of it , I guess I will not qualify to appear on Freshly Pressed. And for what reason?
What about controversial political blogs? Does that fall into adult/mature? There is no foul language, or if so, quite the minimum. Just curious. Never really thought about a post being featured on the Freshly Pressed, but this did make me question where my blog falls… Thank you.
How come you don’t feature an Education blog?
Hi world! I just recently joined WordPress and that is great advice. Please go to my blog at emily1209.wordpress.com I write storys and would love to be discovered although I am quite young. Thank you if you do and some people have told me that my stories are really funny. I hope you think so too.
Oh Joy!
I’m a week or so late, but what a joy (pun intended). Your so-very-helpful article spawned such a delightful set of responses I hope the whole lot features on Freshly Pressed! And so nice to have your gentle, helpful replies along the way.
Well done guys.
Oh, by the way. Ignore the lot. Pick me instead!!
Ian
So, I’ve always wondered, how do blogs even get popular? I’ve been writing this thing for a month, I put more, better, original content in them than all the blogs that are “top five biggest/fastest growing” and yet I’m only getting like four views a day. What’s it take?
Darnit. I’m doing as best as I can with the tags, but if I messed with the titles of my posts, that would only be unorganized for my site. (sigh) I can only hope to be on freshly pressed one day.
I’ll be sure to start adding some illustration to my blogs, being featured in the Freshly Pressed might be a way for me to get my word in front of a hungry audience. Or even a bored audience. It would be nice to have someone see things from my slightly altered perspective…thanks for the tips.
Hey, great idea to help people get more traffic to their blogs. I hope WordPress picks the right blog. Really I think everyone should get a chance. Anybody think so, just leave more comments.
I think I fit the criteria you describe.
So as some other bloggers here I am waiting for Freshly Pressed to be available in other languages. “Some point” is a little bit vague, any chances for more precise time scale? Thank you
Joy, I always wondered how different blogs made it to WordPress’s homepage and now I know. Thanks! Being fairly new to WordPress, I don’t recall seeing a feature that allowed new blogs to share their wordpress.com domain name, content type and their blogs purpose. For example:(Stickyfanatic.wordpress.com,Stationery, Business.) I assume it takes a new user around 10 days to perfect their blog, I think this would be a fair number of days for new blogs to remain on the “NewToWordpress List” (made up List title: lol). Maybe this could be a smooth introduction and a great way for new blogs to attract some traffic to their blogs. Also this way people would not alway have to use the search engine inside of WordPress they could just browse the “NewToWordpress List” browse the list and click on the link/blog title that sparks their attention wheather its the title or content type.
It would be wonderful to be featured. I like to put pictures on my blog. I will subscribe and keep reading this.
An anonymous sperm donor baby all grown up and graduating from Art School… who wouldn’t want to learn all about this experience? Visit me
Thank you for this article. I am really grateful for WordPress. I have never blogged before and set it up just a couple of days ago and then published my first major post yesterday. Today I shared my post “From Being Homeless to Being Here” on Facebook and Twitter and already I have 166 people who have viewed my post.
I am excited about my new blog and sharing it with others.
Thanks for the information. One question: In what language do blogs need to be/should be in order to get featured?
When will my turn come. O God.
My blogs just too boring to make it lol
If you don’t make the Freshly Pressed group, though, it is unlikely that you will get much traffic. I miss the old tag cloud.
It seems like Freshly Pressed does make WordPress.com seem like a news feed, but Freshly Pressed hampers anonymous traffic to the rest of the blogs.
My blog was featured on the Freshly Pressed page, as well as the Featured Page Posts for the photography tag, last Monday. Thanks for selecting my post! It was fun interacting with fellow bloggers and readers who posted comments and shared their thoughts.
Stella wants a shout out!!!!!!!
Been going for a couple of months now and checked my list against yours, seems to fit the profile…Is freshly pressed only for new blogs?
Having noted some comments to the contrary, I would like to state that I am grateful that adult content falls into the “bad” category.
Oooh… I would love to be a Freshly Pressed featured blog! All already do all five of these so fingers crossed, maybe one day…
I like looking at Freshly Pressed, you realize that a lot of people have got something interesting to say, or see.
So in addition to writing the graduation speech every new adult should hear, I have to take a picture of myself in a cap and gown? Okay, I’ll get on it right away!! 🙂
If a check is not acceptable perhaps a 6 pack of beer or my first born child will get me featured. Really, I have read your advice and tips and have tried to use it in all of my new columns. Thanks Brian
Well, technically it’s more like “Five steps” than “Five ways”. You need to do most of these things to get there, it’s not that any one of them is sufficient.
Great tips! Especially about the tags. Mine do indeed sometimes tend to be a little obscure/random.
Merci WordPress! Keep up the good words! I hope that someday I am fortunate enough to be included on Freshly Pressed!
And what about a bilingual blog ? I guess it is too complicated for now…
Great Idea and I think everyone looking for traffic needs to adhere to these tips – I fail on almost every point but then I think that makes mine more interesting!
The “tags vs. categories” support page, https://wordpress.com/support/posts/categories-vs-tags/, needs to be updated. It says:
Is there any advantage to using tags or categories, or both?
No. There is no advantage within WordPress.com and external search engines using one or the other.
However, there is now: if you don’t use tags, you won’t ever show up on Freshly Pressed!
Which leads to a suggestion: why not scan categories as well?
Personally I find most of the freshly pressed selected blogs to be fairly banal and boring. (whoops a negative comment! there goes my chances!) I don’t think a ‘nice blogs only please’ policy adequately represents the wide variety of postings available. Trying not to offend anyone just reduces creativity to a lowest common denominator
I don’t believe it would do wordpress or readers a disservice if you included some ‘edgier’ or more controversial blogs on Freshly Pressed.
I feel like a kid on the playground, hoping to get picked for the kickball game, but knowing that there are too many kids. Woe is me.
Our goal is to be on Freshly pressed … A new breed of wildlife conservation….
Maybe one day.
Cool tips thanks
I will have them in mind while posting my next blog
Thanks Joy
This is good way to know how we can increase knowledge 🙂 I will be so lucky if i will be chosen as a “freshly pressed one” ! It may be so hard for me to be chosen though I will keep my blog going on 🙂
Thanks a lot Joy
Cheers also everyone to be chosen and enjoy your blogging !
I’ve posted all my posts without any pictures and still getting a lot of visits because of the content 🙂
Totally agreed with the fact, that you can capture audience with a catchy and memorable headline 🙂
Thanks, very helpful post! I think I’ve been using tags that are too specific. So, my blog is about vegetable gardening and growing veg on our allotment here in the UK. But I’ve been using tags like ‘courgette’ or ‘seedlings’ to describe exactly what the post is about. Should I be using tags like ‘gardening’ and ‘vegetables’ instead to make sure my posts show up on the ‘major tags’ page?
I’m assuming the blog I wrote about Miley Cyrus being a bad role model for girls is considered hate speech. Of course, anything going against Hollywood or the extreme left political view is probably hate speech. -eye roll-
I want to be featured! All my own writing, pictures, spelling, and tags 🙂 crossing my fingers! I love wordpress!
I’m subscribed to this blog, but I never received a notification of this post in my email. The last 4 email notifications I received were “Twenty Ten”, “Structure”, “Vostok” and “Bueno”.
I’d like to see a little more emphasis on content. it seems to me that the blogosphere is becoming more and more dominated by provocative opinion pieces on subjects the writers know little about. There is nothing wrong with random opinion per se, but there should always be room for blogs which are less provocative and more informative. I don’t think I have ever seem any of my favourite science blogs featured on your list, which I think is a loss to your community
I’m digging Freshly Pressed and being picked would be an Epic Win!
Whoohoo! I meet the criteria. So the saying, and blog title, “When Pigs Fly!” doesn’t apply to me when it comes to being freshly pressed.
This is good day-in-day-out advice, regardless of whether or not one gets a Mr. Linky from Freshly Pressed. Love this idea & love the title ~ you are wearing your best “smarty-pants” again! 🙂
Your tips have been very helpful, and make perfect sense. I will try this out and see if I get results. Thank you…
I would love for our blog to be Freshly Pressed. Thanks for sharing this!
I’ve never actually read a Freshly Pressed blog, but after reading this little news blurb I thought I would. I just assumed that “bad stuff” would include the F-bomb. I guess I was wrong. Bummer – no more Freshly Pressed for me!
This a great opportunity and hopefully I can be chosen. I represent and want to see a reduction in our landfills due to “cat litter”. The green initiative is huge but, no one talks about the cat litter that sits around for years!
Thanks for the info- hope my “How to Feed Your Therapists Freezer” catches your eyes.
Wow! It would be way awesome to be featured.
well looks like I can stop lookin’ for my lil spot. sometimes I REALLY speak my mind and it aint always nice…
Thanks Joy! Just joined WordPress and am loving how easy it is to use. Recommended by my Mom of all people! Looking forward to exploring freshly pressed. Sincerely, Shannon and The Print Yards
Darn. Just wasted an hour of my life writing about fear-mongering beauty tips from the ancient world. 😦
Thanks for Freshly Pressing me!
Is there an archive of these, by chance?
Thanks so much for the great tips. I think my blog has all of those things! 🙂 Hopefully I get the opportunity to be featured some day!
Ahh I don’t need it. Thanks.
I feel like my high school written blog would never be able to make this. Oh well, I write for myself and not really for an audience haha. too bad , i guess everyone always thinks their own life is interesting
I think I will do this. I need the press or should I say wordpress
Ode to an Obsequious Blogger
If brevity were the soul of wit,
Then sadly your shy blog is not it.
Whilst you bend to the whims of that Wordy Press
With your own daft words you deign but to impress,
And what are your true thoughts is anyone’s guess.
One ought rather speak only from the heart
Even though one’s words might impart
A thought or two that might give a start.
But I wish you luck with your blogging plight.
And hope one day you will see the light.
Good post. Something I’ve been wondering about for a while.
Fingers crossed
Fingers and toes crossed!
Joy, you have told us everything about Ways to Get Featured on Freshly Pressed except How to Get Featured on Freshly Pressed.
My new blog is up and running and primped and preened ready for inspection – see if you like it.
Are you looking only for very active blogs? For those of us that post how-to articles only a couple of times a month, would we qualify?
I’d actually kinda like more information than this.. It’s good, yes, but is very basic. Is there a more extended version by any chance?
Thanks for the tips. Love the idea of Freshly Pressed…save my time to search..hehe.
Perfect! Thanks for sharing the tips. I’ve just started blogging our family’s experience living without screen media, and I’d love to be featured on Freshly Pressed some time in the future!
Thanks for the headsup to us new bloggers on WordPress!
Great idea. I don’t know if I stand a chance, and I’ve seen great blogs thanks to the comments posted, thanks.
Cool, I do all of that… now I am waiting…
LOL
Thanks for the info, though.
i would like to be featured. my site is legit
Freshly Pressed is great opportunity to share quality content. If I’m selected, I’ll consider it a great accomplishment. Thanks for the tip!
So I will climb the rock—
thanks for your kind info
Dear Joy Victory,
Good Day and May God Keep you Blessed Always 🙂
Honestly at loss of words to thank you for such detailed and nice article on the right way to creating new blog, cautious approach on posting pictures that not belong to the author of to be newly created blog, yet possibility of posting permission granted pictures after obtaining approval from WP. Further on possibility of posting necessitated video link that could well rock with the content of the blog that need further visual explanation.
Let me summarize it by stating that my learning as beginner on the right and best way to create a healthy blog, begins here. So have book marked your wonderful blogging article to keep referring when feel unsure about any thing being entered into any fresh appropriately headed blog.
Your helpful tips are simple to understand and unique – not to be found so simple and clear anywhere else. Keep updating when you get time.
Yay, the “secret” is out!!! Thanks for this very encouraging insight!
Good tips! I must try to add some pictures to mine 🙂
i like this information.
What if I leave a pathetic appeal reply to this post? Will that increase my chances of landing on Freshly Pressed? Comment #462 is the charm!
