As some of you noticed, including a number of major media organizations, WordPress.com had some unexpected downtime on Thursday evening. Whether you’re eating delicious BBQ, as I was, watching a marathon, or about to post your opus, downtime is an annoying interruption and we hate it.
This had nothing to do with our network providers, or data centers, or aliens, it was completely our fault. A single line, nay, a single character out-of-place, slipped by our normal review and testing and started overwriting settings when triggered. The team immediately took the site down to prevent further damage and clean up the mess that had been caused. All hands were called to deck.
First we determined that 11.2 million blogs were unaffected by the bug. So we brought those back up. For the remaining 50,000 or so, including some VIPs, we started restoring the lost settings using backups, audit trails, and logs. This was largely automated and we brought blogs back online as they were fixed, but a few final tricky ones were brought back one-by-one by hand because we wanted to make sure everything was in its right place.
For most folks (99%) your site was only unavailable for an hour, the rest came up a bit after that, and the tricky ones we worked on until Friday morning. Fortunately because of the time of day and the shorter duration, this had a smaller effect on traffic (about 3.9m) versus the last time (5.5m).
As a silver lining to this failing of the cloud, we learned a lot. We’ll be using our newfound experience to keep WP.com a safe, stable, and robust place to hang your hat and have your blog call home.
If you have any questions, notice any remaining wonkiness, or just want to say howdy, we’d be happy to hear from you.
More importantly, I think we all just appreciate the honesty.
Thank you for the timely notices and information. I didn’t actually notice a problem so perhaps I wasn’t affected.
Thanks for your excellent support. As a system programmer and former system manager I know the panic that can set in when things go bump in the night. Thanks again.
Thanks for your transparency!
Completely missed it! Good to know you guys are on top of things. Thank you!
Thanks to all at WordPress! Great support as always! We had no issues, I did read about it somewhere but by the time I checked my blog everything was back to normal… keep up the great work!
That’s life in the computerworld, isn’t it? You must have done really good work to fix it all! Thank you! 🙂
I’ve seen much less substantial sites go down much more often. The user interface (deliberately) belies the underlying complexity.
I was blogging review of Justin Cronin’s The Passage so it just seemed appropriate. Thanks for keeping us flying!
You guys have so little downtime that I feel all sorry for you when it happens. I can honestly say that WP is one of the best services I’ve used on the web for uptime … and features … and and and. You guys are awesome.
I can’t remember now whether I noticed the outage or not, but I do appreciate your being upfront.
Makes a refreshing change from “Well, sir, you’re the ONLY person to report this problem…”
How refreshing to read an explanation of anything that begins with, “It was completely our fault.”
Can’t say I noticed. I can honestly say I’m happy with the service WordPress are providing, the easiest way for me to publicize what I need to. Thank you very much.
You handled it in a manner that made it transparent to me. Thanks!
I wouldn’t have my “good stuff” anywhere but WordPress, thanks for all that you fine folks do.
You guys rock in my book so thanks for the update… 🙂 I was having dinner with friends and didn’t notice a thing!
It’s ok. Thank you.
No worries, these things happen 🙂
I was eating delicious BBQ. Creepy.
With this level of transparency and dedication to fix things up, unfortunate downtime is highly acceptable. Good job team.
You got my back. Thanks. 🙂
No wonder I couldn’t log in! It’s okay guys…dumb stuff happens all the freaking time!
The WordPress Team is just super. THANKS.
I did notice it, but Thanks WordPress for the hard work on getting it back up and for mentioning and explaining it later on to us. The honesty thing is great to see.
Truly, you guys are the best. Thanks for looking out for us.
COOL! thx for the fast work
Thank you WP 🙂 I love your site. It feels very good to just let thoughts flow into words.. I didn’t even notice the downtime.
Oh, and one more thing.. Howdy!!! 🙂 🙂
Downtime occurs everywhere.
You restored the fault in no time.
Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the great work and for letting us know what’s going on. I really appreciate it. 🙂
I have experienced down time myself and yes it is annoying but it does happen
and I am glade you are so honest this site rocks and would be lost with out it.
Thanks and keep up the good work all of you do.
Thanks for being on top of your game and keeping us in the loop. No complaints about the greatness of Word Press!
Didn’t notice the downtime on my end. Thanks for the update though. I originally thought I was coming in to find when there would be down time scheduled upcoming. Good too know it’s all over already before I noticed.
It’s okay, these things happen… 🙂
Thanks for being honest about it and taking the trouble to fix it properly. I think WordPress is highly professional, especially considering it is free to use! Thank you
Thanks for owning the entire thing and explaining to us. I feel obliged. I am with wordpress.
Thanks for your honesty now, and thanks for your help then. My blog apparently was one in the teeny minority which was slower in getting back to “normal.” I had to email twice in response to widget malfunctions, both I times received a quick response. It was fixed in about 24 hours, which is no big deal for me. I probably wouldn’t even have noticed had I not been updating a few things and playing around with a new theme. No complaints on this end!! Thanks again!!
Thanks man!
You know, I’m a very new user, but knew that you guys were pretty reputable. I was actually trying to access my blog during the downtime, without success. I was a bit perplexed! I thought it was a freak thing, and now I know that I was right!
Great, no, fantastic job guys!
Blessings in Christ to you all
Though I doubt that any of my own blogs were affected, it is always nice to see wordpress.com acknowledging problems with their servers. After all, the first step to fixing a problem is acknowledging there is one to begin with.
As always, I really love the service provided by this organization and will continue to recommend it to my friends & family.
You guys did a great job to fix it. I appreciate it very much. Thank you!
you people are doing really great job and appreciative by everyone. keep it up
I thank you so much for you letting me know. At that time, I wanted to make a new post but WordPress was down. Thank you.
At first I thought it was a virus! I tweeted about the problem and learnt others were facing it too, so there was nothing to worry about 🙂 Didn’t expect to read an entire post about it, appreciate the effort, thank you 🙂
thank you for letting us know about it, its usefull.
I hate downtimes!! thnks for notifying us and being honest 🙂
I hardly noticed the downtime. In my book, that’s efficiency. Thank you for your transparency of the process. And as John Boxall stated, considering wordpress.com is free, I’m not complaining. To echo everyone else, thank you.
There are times when the sun is no more available for some people. Things like this just happens. But there are some gods – aka adminstrators – which are here to protect us. And also some of them are honest.
Congrats on your job and how you managed to repair, to prevent further damages and MANY CONGRATS for letting us know that kind of things..
You are the best
Thank you for being this. Good job guys. Love wordpress…..
Appreciate the time to let us know about the downtime. Most websites just say they had no idea it would happen.
Thanks for the forewarning.
no stress. these things happen.
i think we all appreciate wordpresses sincerity, honesty and candidness in this matter.
let’s plow on!
Didn’t notice a thing but thanks for letting us know and sorting out! Eva
I live in WordPress most of my waking hours! You’re right downtime in annoying but in my account you have HUGE credit and a little downtime, well so what. Thanks so much for your service and product – it is wonderful and so much of it is free, I never cease to wonder! Lee
Thank you for this informative information. Now we already know what was going on with the other site of WordPress. I know that the WordPress team can survive this problem. Great job to the WordPress team.
And here I thought “Downtime” was going to be a new theme .. I agree with many others. Didn’t notice the downtime. Glad you jumped to fix the bug so conscientiously and professionally. Glad you let us know in such a transparent way. You continue to be the best.
Thank you for the information. Great to be kept in the loop.
Keep it coming.
I’m always amazed at the high level of support wordpress provides considering this is a free site! WordPress is really like no other site. thanks!
You guys are terrific! Thanks for the speedy fix…
I just wanted to say thank you as my blog was offline for most of the day which means one of you was likely working on it by hand. I appreciate it.
Thanks for the update.
I’m still trying to understand how to use WordPress much less understand downtime.
A single character? – my my, what slaves are we to technology! – lol {Applauding WP}
Hey guys,
Honestly, I wasn’t affected at all. But that only goes to show what a great job you guys do. I really appreciate the updates and the facts presented so candidly that it restores my faith if only a little bit in the online medium. There will always be some wise *** trying to bolster their egos by shutting down a network with a bug. Then again, they is always going to vigilant teams of people doing their jobs and making a difference.
Superb job wordpress …Thank you and keep it up!
Thanks, no worries mate.
It is understandable, things happen. It is a great that WP is willing to be honest with their patrons. Though as this is a free site, we have little to complain about. Needless to say, most sites would go without saying anything. Great work getting the problem fixed and thank you very much for the honesty, I really appreciate all your work.
Thank you for the good job, and keep up the good work.
Thanks for the quick response, the hard work, the good job and the honesty.
I love it when a company admits complete responsibility for an error and then proceeds to fix it. Can think of another company much in the news of late that I wish would do the same. Bravo to you!
Thank you for your hard work, and for the honesty. I’m really happy with WordPress 😀
brilliant work. Nothing affected on my end, except traffic drastically reduced. or minimally. Frankly, I appreciate everything you do!
You handled this really well. Appreciate all that you do.
amazing. all said and done, you folks do a great job.
Since this all free… I just can say, “Thank you for your hard work, I really appreciate it.”
Thanks for the honesty and quick response to the downtime.
There’s nothing as good as a Leader accepting responsibilities for mistakes. Keep it up WordPress.
These things happen. You run a fantastic site and I have no complaints at all. Keep up the good work!
I find it sadly amusing that a company that does not charge for its excellent service is SO quick, decisive, and transparent about solving its infrequent problems whereas a multi-billion dollar corporation drags it heels, finds excuses to either not act or to act poorly, and wants the people it has harmed to pay for being harmed. Thank you for not following BP’s business model!
Hi – thanks for telling us what happened and for getting it back up quickly. my Riding the Elephant blog was affected for an hour or three (not sure excactly how long – I was in London and went to sleep!)
je
I hadn’t even realised – but then I suppose I was out Thursday evening 😉 Thanks for your honesty – but more importantly for all your hard work for getting us all back up and running. I love WordPress.
Well done and thank you 😀
As far as I am concerned, WordPress is one of the very few blogs and/or forums that I ever experienced a problem with. Unlike other blogs this is the first glitch I ever experienced in three years being here with you. Thanks as always WordPress is appreciated.
WP is awesome and improving every day! Glitches happen. Thank you so much for all your efforts! BIG KUDOS!
Nice try, we all know the aliens did it.
Quite covering up for them.
This downtime is so small in the grand scheme of things that it isn’t a big deal at all. The update, however, is greatly appreciated. 🙂
All I noticed was the decline in traffic, other than that everything was all good. Thanks for the honesty, really appreciate it! Happy blogging 🙂
I actually didn’t notice the downtime. But you guys are doing a great job. Thanks!
No worries mate… you should see the site where I came from… bugs upon bugs upon bugs and with every single new bug “fix” more bugs popped out of the woodwork. They very seldom explained and they hardly ever apologised.
I find this post refreshing and it makes me 100% sure that I made the right move in changing blog sites. Good on ya…
Yeaaaah, you guys are pretty much fantastic. Love WordPress lots. ❤
Problems and mistakes happen to everyone, they are inevitable…the test is how you react and overcome them and WP has done that brilliantly.
Keep up the good work guys 🙂
OMG your not Perfect !
I’m crushed, totally disillusioned .. 🙂
i appreciate the honesty and the effort. great job – as always. thank you very much for doing all you can to make our blogging experience as sweet as possible.
Yeah, I agree with many of the comments here. I appreciate being informed in such a detailed way and so quickly too. These things happen. I think WordPress is such a great service. Such a amazing vehicle for so many voices…thanks so much for all that you guys do. Peace…
I agree with John Boxall…..can’t complain when WordPress offers such a great free service….and everyone has an ‘off day’. You’re doing a great job! :-
Obviously not a huge problem, but thank you for the explanation. Hope the BBQ was good in any event!
Thank you for letting us know. You have a great job.
I am WAY late with this, but uh, yeah, I didn’t notice anything either. Thanks for the honesty. In a world that’s gone fake, it’s refreshing to see that some people/companies maintain some degree of SINCERE integrity. Thanks again you guys are ******* awesome.
Oh and before anyone says anything negative, yes, I am aware that my blog sucks. 😛
Am really impressed by the way you people keep things going..and at the same time being honest and sincere..hats off to you WP..Kudos n Cheerz…!!!!
Yo! bro… 3 cheers for Matt & tech support @ WordPress. Your corporate/collective sincerity has overwhelmed me and it deserves the needed commendation from the floor. It’s what the world needs more of.. God bless.
(P.S. Was setting up brand new blogs last couple of days, but didn’t feel the downtime.)
This was awesome for something called free service… Love it!
I have blogged with WP for almost three years. Everything is OK. I appreciate you.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE WordPress! Thank you for keeping us informed! 🙂
