Starting today you’ll notice a new feature at the bottom of all WordPress.com blog posts. We’ve enabled a “Like” button, which, when clicked, shows a Gravatar image for all the bloggers who like a post.
When you “like” a post two core things happen. First, the blog post’s author sees your “like” and can click-through to your Gravatar profile. Second, clicking “like” saves the post in your homepage dashboard (in the “Posts I Like” section), so you can share it with others, or just keep it around for future reference. If you’re interested in keeping track of how many likes your own blog posts are receiving, there’s a new “like count” column on the “Posts > Edit Post” screen. This will show you the total like count on each of your posts, right next to the total comment count.
We’re hoping this will be an awesome new way to discover other interesting bloggers, and start new conversations with people who — literally! — like you. If you haven’t updated your Gravatar profile yet, now would be a great time to upload a picture, a link to your blog, and any other details. Editing your profile is easy, just remember that all of your profile information is public.
If you’d prefer not to display likes on any of your blog posts we’ve provided an option to turn them off under “Appearance > Extras.” You can still enable or disable likes selectively on individual posts through the “Show likes on this post” checkbox when editing or writing a new post.
To help you get fully up to speed, check out the new support document on the likes system.
Update:
To turn off the Like button you will now need to go into Settings > Sharing. You can read more about this move here.

Love your blog and the theme you chose. i would like to make my private blog like yours 🙂
Nice job guys! And I can’t wait to see more new features!!!
I love that idea…sometimes people just want the click of a button! Thanks for sharing.
I Love Your WordPress T-Shirt… I Want One, Its Awesome!
Thanks! It’s actually a hoody, you can get one at http://shop.wordpress.net/ once the new site is finished.
nice!
Doesn’t appear on my blog!
I’ve just checked your blog and I see the button above the comments section of your blog posts.
I really like this like it 🙂 😀
Figata..
I’m sorry but I don’t really understand it. It’s good, that there’s a way to save the posts I like. But for me it’s also very interesting, how many people liked my posts. And … by the way … I’m not visiting the wordpress.com-site very often. Therefore it would be great to get the Likes into the WP-Admin-Window. Like “Articles”, “Links” or “Sites”, there should be “Likes”. A place, very I can see, what I’ve liked, and what other people liked at my blog.
But the idea itself, the Like-Button, is great. I’m looking forward to the time, wenn non-bloggers are able to like it too. 🙂
You can see all the posts you have liked in the “Posts I Like” tab on the WordPress.com homepage. To see how many likes all of your blog posts have then go to the edit posts screen in your blog, the like counts are next to the comment counts.
I like the feature (although I wish there were a different word for “like”–thanks to FB overkill). Convenient to be able to have a list of posts I enjoyed without having to try to remember what they were or lose them forever.
It’s good to have this. But one suggestion. It’ll be more useful if ‘like’ button is placed right next to the heading of the post. Because, When posts are split with ‘more’ feature, visitor cannot see the button. Those who know about the wordpress’ like button will only click ‘read the rest of the entry’ link to press the button. But some, who really likes the post by reading up to what they see on page, may not have enough patience to click ‘more’ link so as to press the button. Think about it.
…with thanks.
Yes, a friend is desperately trying to find the “star” right now. It would be really nice if non-Wordpressers people could be allowed to at least see the star. She says the star must be invisible, but she sees people’s faces and want hers there, too! I LOVE the idea that the star is there. Kind of nice to see which blogs have received the most feedback, and I like the placement. I just wish it wasn’t only open to people on WordPress, as many of my subscribers of from Blogger or just plain independents who find me through Facebook.
this sounds like a geat idea, thanks alot!
Thanks.
Cool! I ‘like’ this post! 😀
Like 🙂
I love this idea! Thanks.
Me likey!
Personally I’m not thrilled about the continual dumbing down of online discourse to “like” and “unlike” buttons … before you know it, there will be a whole array of buttons for a variety of programmed responses, and no one will be saying anything of any real value.
Get beyond “liking” something and let the blogger know how you really feel.
Nice article, Thanx
i like this! nice one.
Thank you for having fixed the position of the button in the Tarski theme.
Concerning this feature I am not sure how often I will use it.
Hum…happy to see this feature…will prove helpful in discovering new and interesting stuff people post…but would have been great if WP were to innovate some thing themselves instead of simply following FB concept…
Good Idea.
a truly nifty idea, thanks blokes
It took me a while to figure it out. Now, I have to go and “like” some posts. 🙂
You guys really need to make a Facebook like button.
Nice feature – but – the only way to reveal the “like” button is to open the comments. The button should be available whether comments are open or not. Just my opinion… – Jeff
The like button should always be visible and it’s most likely the theme you are using that is hiding the button. Could you test another theme and see if that fixes it? Thanks.
Is there option to choose for its placement? ie. “in front of page/post” instead of “above comment” this way people don’t have to click the post to see the gravatar.
Not at the moment no.
Nice! I’ve been waiting for something like this.
I may or may not use this because, like the ratings option, it gets depressing when few people reply, and it shows other readers how relatively unpopular you are. 😦
I have several years’ worth of posts. Is there any way to see a list of just those posts that have been “liked,” rather than scrolling through ALL your posts looking for those with numbers in the “Likes” column (since the column headers don’t sort)? In other words, is there a “Likes” report function for the blog administrator?
There isn’t right now, but that’s something we’ll look into adding.
Great 🙂 Thanks!!
this is a great idea!!!!!!!!1
Nice feature! Thanks.
cool, when will we have “follow this blog” button like blogspot.com has?
We’re looking into options like this.
Sweet 🙂
I like that very much !
Liked that 8)
Very Cool, and what about FB ?
Hi. Nice one! thanks! 🙂
Thanks, but… Can you possibly tinker this so we could have the CHOICE of using the like facility to show only the number of likes? I would rather not have the visual junk of all those gravatars (yes, I’m being wildly optimistic I’ll get some of these things).
WOOT WOOT!!!! Wonderful idea!!!!
WordPress is getting better and better!
This is a good feature. Thank you.
VERY cool!
i really like the like button, and love the re-blog feature attached to it. But i’ve been having problems lately with the like button not working. I will click it. nothing happens. i will close the tabe, and then open it again in a new tabe, and the like sticks.
Could you contact support and explain the problem in detail please?
JOY. This sounds like a cool feature 😀
I like it and I have it.
Thank you.
two thumbs up!
This Is Freaking Awesome!
Good Job!
postingan yang bagus,,,
syukron..!!!
Theres no “Edit Post screen”!!!
In your blog dashboard click on the top level “Posts” menu. You should see a list of your posts and the number of likes in the second to last column.
love it
Love that idea…. 😀
Wow this is great! Like it :p
I love word press… very thoughtful…
how this use? thanks
Sounds great!!!
http://legalrobbery.wordpress.com/
can we have the Like button in blue colour instead of yellow colour with a star? example : http://www.blogtap.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/facebook-like.jpg
and i would like to request for a RETWEET button too..hope it can be considered. thanks!
nice …. 🙂 🙂
Wonderful …yery cool
Liking the like button.. In fact I am loving it.
Yay! Like this! ^__^
Cool new feature.
But the like button should also appear in the blog under each post, not just single posts! Because some are so short that don’t need the user to open them in a separate post page!
This is very ‘like’able as sometimes we only want to say “I like”, although there’s nothing which could totally replace a valued comment.
So cute! Just like facebook! 🙂
I like the “LIKE” 😀
Do I miss something or is it has to be right that ? I just see the “Like” button while I’m log-in into my account. When I’m logging out, I can’t find the button anywhere
The like button is for logged in WordPress.com users only.
The “Like” button is for sharing posts among WordPress.com users. It will be visible only when you’re logged in 🙂
super idea!!!
I like it. I’m new at this and appreciate any help I can get. My blog, http://www.ypalmcoastnow.wordpress.com, is about personal experience in and aroound Palm Coast, Florida.
hugs
I just added it to my site. I am liking wordpress.com more and more each day!
My excitement waned when I saw it was only available when people are reading individual posts, not at the main site address and that they have to be logged into WordPress. It’s a step in the right direction, but I’m hoping these things can be addressed.
We’ll continue to tweak and improve it as time goes on.
Great feature. I often don’t have enough of a sentiment to make a meaningful comment. (I didn’t even know about the thumbs up thing others are referring to.) I just wish this was offered on the homepage, not only if you open a specific post.
Either way, it’s a LIKE for me!
How about “Liking” Pages? Hey, don’t short shift Pages! I put a lot of good stuff in my pages and they shouldn’t be overlooked – they need quick comments, too. Just sayin’
Thank God, I’m able to turn the “like” function off.
Nice addition. Thank you 🙂
unfortunately only for logged in users only
great idea thanks a ton 🙂
Love it, Like it, Thank you!
Wow! I like the “LIKE” button…keep it up….
thumbs up
cool!
Good one! You people are innovative like Google. I LIKE this!!
Good, very good. keep it on.
that`s really Kool!!
