Starting today there is a new way for your readers to share the posts on your blog with friends. This feature allows you to add sharing functionality from a range of services to the bottom of your blog posts.
![]()
Here’s a quick video introduction:
To begin with we have the following services for you to choose from. If there is a service missing from the list, don’t worry! You can add your own custom services as well.
- Press This
- Digg
- StumbleUpon
- Email to a friend
You can control these new options in your dashboard by going to Settings > Sharing.
You can choose which of these services you want to display and in a range of different formats. If you have the custom CSS upgrade you can go even further and choose your own icons and layout. We have also added stats for all activity around this feature so you will be able to see what content people are sharing and on what services. Check out the sharing support article for more information on getting setup. Note: We will also be releasing this as a WordPress.org plugin next week.
Update: This is now available as a WordPress.org Plugin called Sharedaddy.
thannnnkkkkk yooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
I’ve been waiting for this for so long
you guys are just brilliant
I cannot begin to tell you how awesome you folks at WordPress are. I just mentioned this when you rolled out the Tweet button. Peace.
Thank you so much; this is fabulous!
Ohh, I waited such a long time for this. Thank you
You folks just ROCK, do you know that? Thank you so much!! :o)
Thank you !!!! We’ve been wanting this for a long time. I’m excited to find the time to sit down and do it. Happy to see the announcement though!
YES YES YES YES YES! Finally. Thank You!
Seriously maybe WP should take it easy for a while…all this cool innovation-wordpress could easily become a religion.
Just yesterday, when attempting to configure the “new” Digg into my blog, I thought I’d failed.
Today — prior to reading this notice — I assumed I did better than anticipated when seeing all those new icons at the bottom of my posts. Ha!
Simply the BEST!!!
Thanks so much, this is what I needed! 🙂
This is truly awesome. Thanks a million
I gave my praises earlier and I’m wondering: Why is my WP “Like Button” still hidden???
Thanks guys! Awesome…
The like button is showing on your blog for me. If you have any problems you should contact support.
AWESOME! This is a VERY welcome feature. XD
Awesome. You are THE MAN (or WOMAN)! xD
Gosh! Awesome!
Many Thanks.
great news, thank you.
hello there,
i was using getsocial for this. now it will be better but share options are only visible when someone clicks on the blog post.
is it possible to have them visible on the main blog page?
Yes, you need to change your settings: https://wordpress.com/support/sharing/
Great!
Thank you !!!! We’ve been wanting this for a long time. I’m excited to find the time to sit down and do it. Happy to see the announcement!
YES! YES! YES!!!
Love this! Been waiting a long time, but it’s been worth the wait 😀
Yahoo! Nice job – I was waiting for this. I’ve always been a big wordpress fan, but this time you really outdid yourselves!
Oh – passed 500, 000 page views this week. Thanks wordpress!
Wow! I have to check this out!
This is very helpful
Having added this to my blog I am struck by how this excellent feature could be even more visible. I see others have asked for it to be added to the top of a post. This is indeed better than the bottom IMHO, but was wondering if it could also be made as a widget that could be added to a theme. OK I know. I’m greedy 🙂
Great work! Thanks for continuing to roll out new features.
Finally an easy way to let readers share my posts. I love it. Good Show.
Good news! wordpress is upgrading features soo fast!
I like the feature very much, but I have one small problem : When I select : Show sharing buttons on > Posts only , it also shows the sharing buttons on my other pages. And I don’t want that. What can I do?
P.S. : Keep up the good work 😀
You can disable it using the checkbox at the bottom of the post edit page
Awesome new feature. Thanks!
Great improvement. It would be nice to have the opportunity to switch it off on special sites. I would like to have it on the index and post sites, but I don’t want it on pages like the contact page.
Cheers!
You can use the disable like and sharing checkbox at the bottom of the post edit page to disable it.
Thanks for this hugely helpful info! Used it to make changes to our blogs. Really appreciate it.
Fantastic! I’m blown over by the constant stream of WordPress.com improvements – and WordPress.com was already hot!
OMG! finally! the easiest way to add Facebook share! thanks a lot! good job. good job.
Very Nice, as a new WP user I was struggling trying to make sense of my SM tabs and making them mesh. This helps
Uh, is it already chrismas or somethin?
Thank you wordpress. This is a great feature much needed
This is great for the less software savvy folks like me! Thanks so much!
Excellent! Things are really heating up here in the promotional tools department.
Much appreciated! Cheers
Pretty soon we will type something from our bedroom and it will be resounding around the world in every social media network possible!
You made my life easy. I was trying so long to add these buttons manualy, but with no success. Thanks a lot.
Thank you! I’ve been trying to figure out how to allow people to Print direclty from my Blog.
Great stuff WP !! you folks keep rolling out the good stuff. glad to be hosted by you crew. big love and respect from the global south -d
Another great added feature. WordPress, thank you so much for making this site better and better!
This is fabulous! Now I can recommend wordpress.com to everyone. This was the missing link. Thank you.
At the risk of saying what others have been saying: YES, YES!!!!! HAHAHAHA!!
I noticed it by accident today!
Awesome! Thank you WordPress team.
Cheers!
Another lovely and fantastic feature from wordpress. As USUAL. 🙂
I think this is great, but I’d appreciate it if you added Google Buzz as well, as I use that a lot.
This is exactly what I was hoping for. I’m really excited about this new feature.
I really am delighted by this. Many thanks.
3 negatives
1. I will have to go through all my old posts and get rid of GETSOCIAL icons 🙂 oh well a price worth paying!!!
&
2. You’ve finally got included one of those must have features that really had to be there. The only one missing now is auto feeding a facebook fan page rather than a personal page. ALMOST THERE. Can’t wait … I know you are waiting on it of course (dates? year?)
&
3. Stylistically the icons seem a little big. As a way around I guess you could recreate a new service with a new icon OR is there any way of simplifying the look and feel by adding a single icon & its associated functionality like with sharethis or addthis ?
and as a PS my CSS modded connections theme seems to work well with the new feature.
thank you again
delighted of london
You can disable smart buttons and just show an icon if you think they are too big.
Wow, you guys are AMAZING! It’s mind blowing how talented (and uber-tech-savvy) you all are! I love this feature.
Question: Who is the guy with the great British accent who records the tutorial videos for Webpress? He’s great!
Do you have a name? His site address?
Thanks so much in advance!
That would be Michael Pick, who can be found on the Automattic about page.
Wow another great feature from my favorite people! ^_^
Outstanding! Have wanted something like this for a long time. Thx guys!
Guys, the print option is great and it is something I been waiting for. But the print option provided (without additional options) is not print option that I was looking for. The current print option not only prints the blog post but also prints the sidebar! And this waste page and space. I can do the same using the browser print option – so what’s the big different with the print option from WordPress?
So what I am looking for from WordPress is something else. I prefer the option to print the post (or page) in a “printable format” which excludes the side bar, comments, possibly related posts field. Just focus on the content itself and option to add tags and categories. That would be better. Thanks alot
The result varies from theme to theme, and we will look into better ways of ensuring a consistent output.
Am I stupid? I dont have a “share” in my settings menu. I am running wP 3.0.1
It is only available on WordPress.COM – a plugin for WordPress.ORG has not been released yet.
I love this feature but I’m a bit confused. I went to Settings and Sharing, did exactly as the video said. I can see the icons on post previews but they don’t appear once the draft has been posted. What am I doing wrong?
You have them set to appear on your posts only, which they do. If you want them on index pages also then you’ll need to change the settings: https://wordpress.com/support/sharing/
Hmm, I’ve enabled the buttons but they aren’t showing on my blog unless I go to the comments page. Readers who want to share but not comment will not see them.
A comment above suggests that my Firefox Adblock may be hiding them, but even when I log out of WP at check the blog with IE, I’m not see them on the front page.
They seem to be showing fine for me on your blog. Please contact support if you still have a problem.
This was the thing which originally made me go self-hosted years ago… been missing it since I came back. Really, really amazing, well done!
I think it’d make sense to integrate the wordpress ‘like’ system into this, so it can go with the others.
as an online paid freelance writer, this will make my life a lot simpler! THANKS.
This is what we were waiting for….excellent stuff! But, could you add in more services like Buzz, option to have both Facebook like and share etc. It still looks a bit cumbersome to add new services for an average user.
Wowwww… !!!! its very.. veryyy.. nice and the besttt !!!! i’m super like it !!! 😉
Great! but stil no del.ico.us button.. perhaps next you could add it..
thanks.. good job, team!.. 🙂
You can add your own service if the one you want is not there – https://wordpress.com/support/sharing/
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
One word….wait, two words: THANK YOU! 😉
Thanks, I’ve been waiting for this.
This is really amazing!! Great job!!
gosh finally what i’ve been waiting for!!!
Question: Any chance we can get a little greedy and have BOTH the Facebook SHARE button AND the Facebook LIKE button at the same time? Please? I’m beggin’…
We’ll look into this for the future
Totally cool… You Guys absolutely ROCK!!!! Thank you 🙂
Awesome! Just one REQUEST: Add a Facebook LIKE button! Thank you!
There’s already one these – check out the support doc!
FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY!
I was getting really sick of adding the Share This buttons to each and every post manually! Thank you so much! This is awesome!
Is there a way to analyze what our readers used to share one of our posts? facebook, twitter, etc… how many times have users clicked on Facebook? etc…
Yes, see your blog stats. Unfortunately we currently can not record smart buttons.
Absolutely loved it, great feature thanks a lot for sharing it.
Aniket
Great! I can’t remember how often I’ve tried to add a “StumbleUpon” and a “Digg” badge to my page, trying different scripts and HTML-versions of each hoping to circumvent the WordPress script blocker… all in vain. And now its finally here as a feature and only takes 5 clicks to add. Thanks!
I like this new Display ! 😉
thanks alot ! how I can add more Share Site ?
Awesome. Badly Needed. Until now, I was doing it so so mechanically by first editing the HTML and copy-pasting some links. Now that we have it automatically added as a feature, I am so so relaxed. Blogging is becoming easier, happier on wordpress. Best.
I love this new feature! My posts are spreading faster already. Not even 12 hours have passed and I already see results.
Awesome. This is Great. Thanks.
Excellent! Thank you!
this service does not synchronize with the old existing stats in the blog. Like the digg counts does not match which were done with the digg button shortcode, the tweetmeme button tweet count does not match the existing post. So this is a problem. Probably something can be done
Can you contact support with details of where you are seeing this? We’ll look into it for you.
Just excellent !!! Thank you so much !!! 🙂
Great step! Thanks!
Awesome! Just what I needed right now to spread the word
Thanks a lots now i can be able to share my views to others…once again, thank you so much….
Long awaited….Thanks a lot…
Yes ,we need this. Thanks !
Thank you. This is just what I had been waiting for.
No Myspace? 😦 It’s in the top 20+ in the world according to Alexa and every musician has a page to sell their music.
Unbelievable! Finally for this one! Yey!
In my wp admin there is no sharing link in the settings drop down or anywhere else. Seems it’s appearing for everyone else. Im using the latest version. Any ideas? Should I be installing something? Help please.
This feature is for WordPress.COM only, a WordPress.ORG plugin will be released shortly.
Finally! This saves so much time and trouble. Now I don’t have to use Get Social and copy paste a whole string of code after each post.
I do have to go edit all my older posts though to take the old social media links out.
First: THANK YOU! This is awesome.
Second: As long as we’re troubleshooting, it’s a minor detail, but in the “+ share” flyout menu, my columns are a bit too narrow. Some fairly short words are being pushed to two lines. (I use the Vigilance Theme, if that matters.) That’s my only complaint.
Third: Thank you, again.
We’ll look into that theme issue.
Finally! Thanks for this one!
This is one of the best features to be added since I started here on WordPress.com a couple of years ago. Thank you!
