Oh my!
It’s that time of year again, when the folks over at WordPress.org start putting the finishing touches on the next version of WordPress (in this case, version 3.1), and the lucky users of WordPress.com are automatically included in the beta testing, giving you all access to new features about a month before they are officially released. This is awesome, because you get early access, and your feedback can help us make even more improvements. I’m personally pretty excited about the new features you’ll be seeing around here starting later tonight, as they are additions I’ve been wanting for a long time. Here are the new things you can expect to see the next time you’re in your dashboard:
Easier Internal Linking
Yay. Finally. Literally. Seriously. What?! I know, right? 🙂
You’re writing a post (or a page) in WordPress. You mention something you’ve written about before, and think to yourself, “I’m going to link to that last post!” What do you do? You might open a new tab and search for the older content in your dashboard’s list of posts, or you might go to your live blog and find it. Either way, you have to find that content and get the URL, so that when you click on the link button in the post editor, you’ll have it ready. Right? What’s that, 5-8 steps, depending on which way you do it? No more!

With our sexy new internal linking feature, you can now enter any URL to create a link just like you used to, OR you can search your existing posts and pages right there in the link popup. A combination of pre-loading, autocomplete, and some ajaxy goodness make the new link creation tool a joy to use (and man, that popup is so much faster!). We hope this addition spurs you to make more connections between pieces of content on your site, which will make it easier for your visitors to find more related content from you. One more time, all together now: Yay! (Right?)
Column Sorting
When you’re in your dashboard and you click to the Posts section (or Pages, Media, any screen with one of those listing tables), do you ever wish you could click a column header to change the display, like to sort things by date, alphabetically, by author, or other criteria? I know I wish for it all the time. And now we have it! This feature is a product of a successful Google Summer of Code student project, proof that the program is a great way to get involved with WordPress development. The little arrow next to the column heading (in my example screenshot, the Date column) shows you which column is determining the sort order, and if it’s ascending or descending. Just click on the column header to sort by that column, or to reverse the order.
Better Pagination
If you have a lot of content, you may have run into a mildly annoying experience at some point when paging through screens in the dashboard that list your posts, media files, etc. Clicking forward and back is easy enough, as is skipping to the first or last couple of screens, but what about the middle? Say you had 23 screens worth of post listings, you’re on screen #6, and based on the dates, you think the one you’re looking for might be around page 15 or so. You would have had to click several times to advance a few screens at a time until you reached the screen you wanted. No more! With our new pagination style, those quick forward/back and first/last links are still there, but now you can jump right to any screen by just changing the editable number shown in the pagination area (and hitting enter). Sweet!
Ajax Search Results
Reviewing search results will be faster and no longer require screen refreshes in the dashboard, thanks to the addition of ajax to the search results screen. Go Speed Racer!
Revised Blue Color Scheme
In the personal options in your profile, you have a choice between gray and blue dashboard color schemes (the default is gray). We updated the gray color scheme a while back, but didn’t update the blue one at the same time. (Remember when we moved from the dark header to the lighter header? Good times.) The new blue color scheme is lighter, cleaner, and based on the same shadings as the gray color scheme but with a blue hue so that your focus can remain firmly on your content creation, without distraction. If you’ve never tried the blue color scheme, now would be a great time to give it a whirl and see how you like it! Are there other colors you’d like to have as options? Let us know in the comments!
Improved IE9 Support
If you’ve had any trouble using drag and drop features in the dashboard or have had any problems with the Visual editor on the post creation screen when using Internet Explorer 9, sorry! Improvements have been made to make these features work smoothly in the latest Microsoft browser.
Good stuff, yeah? Things to bear in mind: these are new features, and though they’ve been worked on and tested for some time, you may find a bug we missed. If one of these features gives you any trouble, please let us know. You can leave a comment on this post within the next two weeks, talk about it in the forums, or contact support through the usual channels.
I hope you enjoy these additions as much as we enjoyed making them for you. Happy blogging!
Update: November 20, 2010 11:30am
Thanks to your reports we’ve been able to find and fix a couple of bugs that we didn’t encounter in our own advance testing.
- We fixed a conflict with the CSS plugin wordpress.com uses (the incompatibility did weird things to content in the editor), so reported problems like content being all underlined or bolded unexpectedly should no longer be happening.
- We fixed an issue with IE8 for internal linking. We are still working on issues with IE7. (But seriously, using outdated browsers is generally not a good idea. Update your browser!)
If you are still encountering issues with the new features, when you leave a comment or contact support, please state what operating system and browser you are using so we can troubleshoot faster. Examples: “I’m using Firefox 3.9 on Mac OSX 10.5.” “I’m using Google Chrome on Windows 7.”
Thanks!
just what I was waiting for!
OUTSTANDING! That will make linking to previous posts a breeze. Thanks!
I left a message a few hours ago about the linking feature not working – well, thanks to your dazzling technical team it now WORKS 🙂 Thank you very much for such a prompt response! Cheers..
Thank you so much! This will definitely help when I’m referring to previous posts in a current series as well. This is awesome and yes it will save a tremendous amount of time.
I’m impressed with WordPress yet again.
Hm, you really made me curious about the new stuff. Have to try it for myself now, just wanted to say “thanks” in advance ! Keep up the good work 🙂
OK, I’ve had a lot of troubles with Explorer 9 and this wonderful update of WordPress, but now, and I don’t know why it took so long to work, it’s just fine. I’ve tried all these functions on Firefox, and it’s really nice. Cool too that the interface is now more IE9 friendly, that browser is so fast !
There was a bug or two with IE that helpful people reported here in the comments, so we were able to fix it! As people report things, we are fixing them up asap.
At one point, I hope that Comments are added to the content for searching. In our community, the comments are often as profound as the original post/page, but are not included in the data searches. Even as an admin, a search from the dashboard on the Comments page is unwieldy and often useless. WordPress is brilliant, but the database search functions need to be FAR more robust.
Why can’t we embed the vimeo videos ? This should be the next wordpress improvement…
Flash and JavaScript embed code will continue to be restricted for security reasons, but if yo’ure looking to embed Vimeo videos on your blog, I think I am about to make your day by pointing out a feature of which you might not have been aware. About a year ago, we added support for the oEmbed format. This means that when you are writing a post, if you paste the URL for a Vimeo video on its own line, then WordPress will automagically turn that link into an embedded video. I just went and wrote up a post on my blog for you showing how to embed a video on wordpress.com using this method and listing out the content providers we support. It looks like our support documentation doesn’t have all of these listed out, so we’ll go ahead and update those pages, too, but wanted to give you something you could see in the meantime.
Dear Jane,
Just want to let you know they fixed the bug concerning linking in Explorer 8 within 24 hours of posting. I would like to suggest the ability to add widgets in a page. Thanks again to all the WordPress Team. WordPress is number One.
Thanks! Yes, when we do find a bug we try to fix it as quickly as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Amazing work as usual! 🙂
I was literally just writing a post and needed to link to a previous post and opened a new tab to find its URL.
The new internal linking feature is a another great feature that will save a lot of time.
How about red and green color schemes for the dashboard? As for the rest of this post, I love it (I really love WordPress. Oh, right. I guess that’s why I’m here. LOL).
Rock on, WordPress! And thanks.
Finally! I can have a link open up in a new tab/window without having to enter target=”_blank” manually
tampilan yang bagus, wordpress the best…….i love you
Love it. Another winner.
Thank you, thank you for making internal linking easier. I’d been wishing for that for a while.
The easier internal linking is the best new feature! Thanks WordPress!
Whew… less stress! Thanks.
Another problem I have found…
According to wordpress, Wordpree never count my own visit when I am logged in…right?? But….what I have found, After writing a blog, when i was watching the preview using “Priview Change” button, WordPress counted every visit of my site where referer was “WordPress Dashboard”…
But It was I who viewed the “Privew Change” not any other person who visited the site….. So, my question is, if wordpress never count my own visit while logging in why “Preview Change” from Dashboard counted?
Thanks Again
Om Prakash Chowdhury
Hi Om. Since your question is about stats and not the new features, I’m afraid I don’t know the answer! Could you send your question to the happiness engineers so they can investigate? Thanks.
I just used the internal linking thing. I’m IN LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t know if it’s just me but since the new link feature as been implemented, I’m unable to use to link button at all. It shows up in my tool bar but clicking it doesn’t bring up any window. So I have to go to the HTML to code my link. And the HTML switches my link closing tag when I go back to visual. So I have to return to HTML to fix it again. And then it works. Not sexy. 😉
My default browser is IE8.
I tried it on Safari and it worked fine. It is very sexy and useful.
Yes, we unfortunately encountered some IE bugs that hadn’t been apparent during our own testing. They should all be fixed now, but if you’re still having trouble, please contact support and let them know. Glad you liked it on Safari!
Very nice! The Internal Linking feature will come in really handy for my chapters!
Great Job! You keep making my posting easier… Thank you guys!!
I don’t realized that the new paging is fixed.
for me, the coolest feature is internal linking.
but for all, WP is rock !! \m/
It’s ben a while since I added a new blog and I have been looking for a ‘Contents’ link. This looks like the answer I’ve been seeking. Just can’t wait!!
Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WordPress = love! 🙂
Hi, just posted a link on my site, first couldnt believe how easy that works now, second I was very happy about it. Thank you.
features that i have been waiting to come for a long while, and they are here now. Thanks,But i have to mention that Column Sorting has some presentation problem in rtl weblogs.
Could be more specific about the problems with RTL? Thanks.
Love you guys! This is great!
This is all great to hear :D:D
IE 8 is all fixed, and IE 7 is being fixed right now. Sorry for the trouble, and it will be fixed soon. That said, you may want to update your browser to use the current version as it will have better support for current web standards. Outdated browsers are always the ones that tend not to work so well with modern web apps.
If you want blog posts to go to a specif page, you should set up category pages and mark the posts with categories to make them post there
Looking forward to the easier internal linking. Thanks! 🙂
Eh, I am still not used to this new blue scheme. Oh well, I am glad you’re trying to improve the site.
The internal linking is going to be SO useful! Thank you.
Hello, I am grateful for all the things everyone does to make it possible for each of us to share our thoughts, here in such a rich and wonderful reading format. Also for making it possible to link all things together so easily. To the creators and the workers, spending your time making our experience here beautiful I say Thank you, Namste, Adonai Tony Gray’Owl
I just love the fact that you guys are always working on improving or making something new!Keepit coming!:-D
it’s nice to know those new features! really useful!
Am I missing something? None of these new features appear to be working for me. Am I supposed to download something to get WP 3.1?
Hi Joe. You don’t have to download anything, as the features were merged into wordpress.com automagically. However, we did experience a couple of unexpected bugs when the merge first happened, so you may not have been able to access the new features right away. If you are still unable to access the new features, please contact support for assistance.
Now that I’ve used the new internal linking feature I really think it’s cool! But it does raise a question: why an absolute link rather than a relative link for internal links?
So they work in feeds and such, as one reason.
Hi,
I like the feature, but I would like it even more, if pages could be sorted in their hierarchical order, too. This would be a very helpful addition to the alphabetical ordering.
Thanks,
Jo
Now all we need are access to stats on the iOS apps. 🙂
If you know any iOS developers, send them our way! Like the WordPress web application, the iOS app is an open source project, and anyone can contribute code to improve its performance. 🙂
Late… still timely. 🙂
I wrote on Friday before that it didn’t work. Today it does work and its brilliant! Very useful, great idea and very well executed.
Love the new internal link feature. It is definitely easier to use!
i have a weblog in Persian language, and when i open edit page, the arrangment of paging buttons are not right. For example, there are two left-arrow shaped buttons that when you click on one of them it direct to next page and when you click on other one, it direct you to previous page.I mean both of these buttons have same style and icon, but do different actions.Regards
Hi there. The “arrows in opposite directions” is a standard interface convention for next/previous when it comes to paging. What you are describing sounds like what it’s meant to do, though in RTL format. If it is behaving other than you see on other websites, please contact support and send them a screenshot so they can troubleshoot. Thanks!
Love the internal linking.
Question about the Column Sorting: Will it also work for custom post types?
There are no custom post types on WordPress.com.
WORDPRESS….MARRY ME!
*goes down on one knee~*
PS: you can’t say no =D
Where’s the honeymoon?
Thanks for coming all the new features on our side dashboard,
so we can do everything on wordpress what we could do the times make difficult 🙂
The updated linking is great; But will we see options for intra-post linking (i.e. for purposes of footnotes, liking to some point later in the same post) on the horizon?
That’s not on the immediate roadmap since it’s not a feature the bulk of our users would need, but we’ll keep it in mind when discussing future improvements. Thanks for the suggestion.
Most of the info went over my head but hey…this grandma is on the move! I like Tom Baker’s tip.
Thanks!
These three new features are really very useful. For example, I missed to know easily the ranking of most commented posts, and now that wish is solved. The new linking is great too, and the tip about paging could be useful sometimes. Good!.
It would still be nice to have a feature to disable pingbacks when linking to your own posts, since I usually end up having to delete those manually.
Wow … keeping busy over there are we?! Thanks for the upgrades!!
I’ve been wishing for the pagination feature, and am sure I will try the other new features you’ve brought about, thanks, wordpress staff, you really are the best!
Very good additions! I’ll definitely put good use to the first one, excellent!
PS: Don’t forget to add more size to the import section, I’ve already 10 MB of backup and could be a problem restore with the actual limit!
Thanks and sorry for my lousy english
Thanks a lot…..It was really a nice upgrad…I do appreciate it
These are nitty-gritty USEFUL improvements. Thanks!
Hi,
Good features. Can we have a feature for bringing “via @Mentions” to the Official Tweet button as provided in the Sharing Services by WordPress. As of now it just shortens the URL and posts the title along with it. The above suggested feature would be good enough to increase one’s followers.
I would understand their might be complexities but the widget/service could prompt user to enter their “username” for that service which would be appended to via @.
Looking forward to your response.
Thanks.
You should definitely connect your blog to Twitter using Publicize (under “my blogs” feature) and we might do something like this in the future.
I love the new internal linking dialog box. Pages and Posts, great. How about adding Categories?
Thanks for all your hard work.
Nice feature..that’s very useful for me..
thanks
Great stuff! Thank you!
Internal linking is very nice, but will it still give me a pingback from my own link? Any way to turn that off?
Thanks!
It still will, and there are no plans to turn that off. You can, however, opt to not receive pingbacks or trackbacks from anyone, including yourself, in your Discussion Options.
Personally I find the self-pingbacks pretty useful to thread the conversation between different posts I have on my site.
Very nice. When doing something on a website requires less clicks, it’s all the better.
Thank you! 🙂
This is a smoothly functioning site and these upgrades are very welcomed.
Will internal linking get me more backlinks too?
From yourself, probably.
I found the internal linking feature to be the best. It has saved me lot of time. Otherwise linking to own posts was getting bit time consuming and boring. It has simplified blogging for me
Frankly it hasn’t done a thing for me except make things worse!!! Linking internally still causes a comment to appear on the linked blog. Totally weird. Even worse this feature has taken over my entire internal/external linking system.
Now when I link externally at the end of a paragraph this new linking feature wipes out the wrap function in the word processor. Instead of wrapping it writes over.
Once again I can’t thank WordPress enough for fixing what wasn’t broke and replacing it with something that doesn’t work!!!
I wonder how many wasted hours I will spend working around this goof.
Just curious, Hotmail lets me not install most of its alleged improvements. I’m still running what hotmail looked like back about 1995. Why can’t WordPress do that?
The march of progress is inexorable.
Wunderfull!!
Thank, so much ~!
Great idea and love the new features!
The new linking feature will be a GREAT addition! Thanks guys!
nice one! 🙂 that’s why i choose wordpress to start blogging!
Nice improvements!
Thank you!!! These will be incredibly useful, even for new blogs (like mine).
For these and much more, I love using WordPress.com! Thank you so much for the new features.
Love the new linking feature!!! Thank you!
Oooh…. linking! I could soooo do with that! Thank you!
A colour scheme I would like is purple. It is my favourite colour and would be nice to have a few more options than just blue nad gray.
Cheers 🙂
Easier Internal Linking! Yah! Very beautfull feature. Thanks very much.
love the linking! still waiting to see the update that would allow the use of the real Twitter widget in the “Text” widgets
I love WordPress.com. Thank you!
i want joining in New Features: Linking, Sorting, Paging thanks
Just the job, thank you
Thanks much! Your ongoing attention to these matters is greatly appreciated! 🙂
cooooool!!!! thanks!
i’ve been using those additions on my “.com” page – definitely handy.
haven’t seen it on the “.org” side yet. will start upgrading.
Thanks for adding these features! (:
I’ve never even thought about these things; I was happy with what there already was but I’ll try these new things out.
Thank you
So Great !! thanks for that
WordPress trumps every other blogging service any day! Mwah! I’m happy to be here!
That’s a really useful addition. I often gave up trying to put in a link.
love wordpress
