Writers are as different as the stories they produce, and their ideal writing environments vary no less. One thing most writers agree on, though, is that one of the toughest challenges is overcoming distraction. At WordPress we’ve always believed that when you’re using the application, the focus should be on what’s most important — your content. In the spirit of making things faster and simpler, today we are introducing a couple of changes to your dashboard that will make it easier for you to just write.
A Fresher, Faster Dashboard
The most noticeable change is that the dashboard looks a little different. Nothing drastic, just a little facelift intended to make managing your content easier. Moving the left menu up means more room if you tend to keep a couple of sections open at the same time. Fiddling with the font sizes in the header also created more vertical space, so you can make your writing window/post box bigger on the editing screens (you can drag the lower right corner if you use the Visual editor, and/or change the default height of the writing window in Settings → Writing). We’ve also replaced the icons in the Visual Editor toolbar with new ones designed by Ben Dunkle, the same person who designed the navigation icons for the dashboard, that we think are less distracting and fit better. You’ll also be saying goodbye to the “New Post” button that used to live in the header. We’ve added an “Add New” menu to the admin bar instead, for faster, easier content creation. Oh, I almost forgot — we’ve made a number of performance improvements to make everything in the Dashboard run just a little bit faster. Yay!
Goodbye, IE6
With this update, WordPress has discontinued support for Internet Explorer 6. It has required increasingly complex code trickery to make the WordPress dashboard work in the IE6 browser, which was introduced 10 years ago and does not support current web standards. Even Microsoft is counting down to IE6’s extinction! If you try to log in to your Dashboard using IE6, it will be pretty broken — but don’t worry, you’ll see a red alert box that provides a link you can use to upgrade. What do we mean by broken? This is how the new dashboard looks in modern browsers:

…and this is what it looks like in IE6:

So please, if you’re still using IE6, upgrade!
While we were at it, we started looking at other older browsers, and it makes us cringe a little when we see people using them, because the web could be so much better for them (not to mention more secure) if they would update to their favorite browser’s current version. Starting with this update, if you log in to your WordPress site using an outdated browser, an orange alert will appear on your Dashboard screen letting you know, and will provide links to the browser updates and to Browse Happy, where you can learn a little more about your options.
Approve and Reply
This is a small improvement, but it feels huge. If you’re like me, sometimes you might not want to approve a comment unless you have written a reply. It used to be that if you clicked to reply to a pending comment in your Dashboard, your reply would be published but not the original comment. I know, I know, it’s not like it is difficult to click on Approve. But! We’ve made it better anyway. 🙂 Now when you reply to a pending comment, the submit button will say “Approve and Reply,” and will perform both actions at the same time. After using this for less than a minute I was completely hooked.
Introducing Distraction-free Writing
The other big change — one that we love — is a major upgrade to the full-screen writing experience. The normal posting screen is great: you can set it up the way you want it, and you can add and edit every piece of metadata related to your post in addition to writing it. Sometimes you just want to focus on writing, though, without all the extras, right? If that’s how you feel, you may have used the full-screen writing mode in the Visual Editor before, accessible by clicking a blue screen-shaped icon in the top row of the toolbar. That full-screen mode took up the full browser screen, which was cool, but then your lines of text went all the way across, making it harder to read and edit your creations. The Visual Editor toolbar stayed up top, which was handy if you wanted to add a picture or a link, but was a little bit distracting because of the colors. And if you zoomed or resized your browser, that was not good.
Everything about this feature revamp is designed to relax you, and allow you to find your groove without distraction. There’s a lot to point out — because hey, we’re proud of it — and the new look is quiet and deceptively simple.
- It’s available for all users, whether you use the Visual Editor or HTML. Visual Editor users will notice a more laid-back icon to enter distraction-free mode, and HTML users will see a new [fullscreen] button. Click one and you’re on your way.
- Distraction-free writing mode still takes over the browser window, but the writing area is optimized for a comfortable line length and easy reading and editing. Editor styles set by themes are also supported.
- The formatting header is shown when you first arrive on the screen, to orient you, then fades away so you can focus on your writing. Move your mouse to indicate that you want access to these items and it will magically reappear.
- Only the most-used formatting and embedding icons are shown, reducing visual noise, along with a Save button in the upper right (you’ll need to go back to the regular editor to publish), and the word count in the lower left.

- Keyboard shortcuts are supported.
- You can switch beween Visual and HTML modes while in distraction-free writing mode.
- Have I mentioned how restful this screen feels when you’re writing? Well, I have now. 🙂
I never used to like full-screen mode for writing, but I love distraction-free mode. Try it, and I bet you will, too!
Tip: make your browser go full screen if you really want to be distraction-free. Press F11 on Windows, or Command+Shift+F on a Mac. To disable full screen, use the same keyboard shortcut, or move your mouse to the top of the screen to reveal the menu.
Get Featured on Freshly Pressed
We hope you’ll enjoy these updates as much as we do. As always, let us know what you think, but this time, let’s mix it up:
- If you encounter a bug, something looks weird/broken, or you need help with the new distraction-free writing feature, please let us know in the special distraction-free writing support forum instead of leaving a comment about the problem on this post. Note that we’ll be continuing to touch things up as needed based on your feedback for the next couple of weeks.
- There’s also a new distraction-free writing support page for reference.
- Leave your feedback on the design update in a comment on this post.
- To comment on the new distraction-free writing feature, go try it first! Write a post and see how it feels. Give it a “just write” tag. Then come back and tell us what you thought about the experience and give us your feedback in a comment on this post. Include a link to the first post you wrote in dfw mode so we can check you out.
I will personally read every first “just write”-tagged post that is linked in the comments within 48 hours. I will (completely subjectively) choose my five favorites posts and feature them on Freshly Pressed, and will also send the authors a WordPress swag pack (buttons, stickers, maybe a surprise or two) as a prize. Note: I am easily swayed by correct spelling and grammar, so be sure to make use of the built-in spelling and grammar checker!
Update 5/31/2011: I chose my winners! With hundreds of posts to read I couldn’t narrow it to 5, so I filled up Freshly Pressed today with my picks. Here are the winners in no particular order:
Vieques Dream House Diary — The International Language of Gardening
communicating.across.boundaries — Dull Women Have Immaculate Coffee Tables
Notes from Africa — Arts and crafts in Mozambique
Stupid Ugly Foreigner — English: Loving the Frankenstein Language
Kadampa Life — Kung Fu Panda and the Secret Ingredient
Teenage Enthusiasm — Willy Loman Inspired This
MBAdventure — Let’s Talk About…Machetes
Learn More Everyday — The Grandeur of Yosemite
Running Barefoot — Alaska to Vermont: Eloping with Edge!
I can’t really feel a difference in the way my screen options look and how distracted I am. My disctactions come from external forces– students coming in to bug me while I’m writing, the list of things I have to do during the day, etc., so while it’s nice to have updates, I think writers need to just write and not make excuses as to why they can’t or why something will work “better” for them. I blogged that idea here http://mprokop.wordpress.com/2011/05/25/just-write-okay/
I just used the dfw update, and really enjoyed it. I’ll definitely be taking advantage of it with future posts! My latest post (using dfw, as requested) can be found here: http://ninilovespie.wordpress.com/2011/05/25/the-big-o/
Thanks, Jane!
I’ve seen several comments here and on the forum asking if we could have the kitchen sink of editing / formatting tools in Distraction Free mode, but I haven’t seen any response to those requests. I always wrote in fullscreen mode, and like the look and feel of Distraction Free mode, but without the kitchen sink tools (or at least the option of showing the kitchen sink) it is not as useful.
Yep, very nice! That’s the biggest problem with actually producing content, getting distracted by all the bells and whistles everywhere on the screen. I’ve been using Word to write and then copying/pasting, but i prefer it this new way.
As requested, here is a link to the blog post (Kung Fu Panda and the Secret Ingredient): http://kadampalife.org/2011/05/24/kung-fu-panda-and-the-secret-ingredient/
Thank you. I’ve also gotten nine other people started on WordPress blogging ‘cos I have found it so do-able myself.
I am writing, and i just made a really cool post. It would’ve been cooler if wordpress didn’t disconnect me halfway and i had to do it all over again.
But i still pick wordpress over blogspot any day 🙂

Long time no there, maybe I should have a try of its new function
Loving it more and more. However, when I upload pics they don’t seem to load completely but then when I exit to the regular view they are there just fine. I’ll keep trying.
Are you going to announce who the lucky 5 are to be Freshly Pressed? Or are the new blogs on FP this week the one’s you chose?
Never mind my question about the lucky winners. I just read your answer in a previous post.
Thanks!
Lets hope this frees me from blowing up my own blog
Maybe it’s just me but the ‘most-used formatting and embedding icons’ are not the ones I use most – would it be possible to add more to the top of full-screen mode? Other than that full-screen is a great improvement. Well done!
this update is really awesome, makes wordpress even stronger and more flexible, i really like wordpress because it is getting better and better every time, while making very easy to make posts.
It’s very nice to know and thanks for your writing. I‘am new here. But i also got a warning when i used Chrome.
I have to admit that I’m a WordPress groupie now – can’t stop showing people how I update teamgloria.com via bbry, iTouch, MacAir et al.
Lovely job.
And I like your writing style very much, Jane, spare yet elegant, informative and also genial. Lovely combination.
hurrah.
have a beautiful day _teamgloria. x
Great move to drop support for IE6. Hopefully more big names will follow suit!
I’m a bit late, but here’s my latest post:

Okay- I am still a newbie to Blogging & still confused on adding links w/ an image…However, I am having fun while learning this whole new adventure of blogging. I am glad I chose WordPress…seems like you are the best!
I just started blogging about two days ago and wordpress is so easy to use that i feel like i have become a pro at it.
Hats off, WP. I was forced to join this community from Windows Live Spaces. Blogging has been an ever-exciting adventure ever since. Thank you so much for all the great work you guys are doing!
Fantastic! I wrote a post with just write and it felt good not to have any distractions. I focused on my thoughts – loved it!
http://mybusinessaddiction.com/2011/05/26/preikestolen-norway-i-have-gone-and-climbed-a-mountain/
Really nice, thanks for all the info. I didn’t know it was so far already.. I thought i would be hard to do this, Althought the Layout and the functions are very nice now..
Keep up the great work..
Regards,
Don
Any improvement is very welcome. I am new to the cyberspace world and have to grope my way through all of it. Setting up and managing my blog has been an extreme challenge so I am in favor of anything that will make it easier. However, like one other responder, I prefer to compose my posts off line with Word Perfect software and then paste it to the blog.
Ok, so I ran into trouble. I have the program where the mouse sometimes triggers a link or command just by moving it over an area (hate it, now that it did this to me)
My problem is that the left sidebar panel is minimized and I cannot see any of the commands.
How can I disable this with a quick fix?
I do remember seeing the option to minimize when playing with the dashboard, but I can’t for the life of me remember where.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Hi folks, I am technologically impaired and have incredible problems introducing and moving pictures into my blog, When i am trying to position photos in the text none of the keyboard commands work –they perform actions that are everything except what is wanted. What am I missing? I am already struggling with steam dial up and this is truly frustrating. Since I dont see anyone else commenting on this it must be my own ineptitude, Please educate me! Also I just cant make any sense whatever of the little write up intended as an education to a reader of my history or whatever— strange names , items is this machine created??? Thanks folks.Laurie payne
I love the new dashboard, looks excellent, and its much easier and better to use.
Excellent Stuff, keep it up. 🙂
GeniusITM
SUPER!
Thankfully some people have the .org verison of the source code so they don’t have to fall victims of, simple, minimal or “less distracting” (read dumbed down) of a UI. I don’t like constant changes that will go for the worst when less is not always more. Less is not more for me, at least one WordPress member.
this cool I like it 🙂 (literally I liked it.)
non *nix people intentionally use IE6?
I hate it. Need the kitchen sink toolbar in the full screen mode. It takes three or more tries to upload pics. Bad bad bad idea.
I like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Hey, this is fabulous, thank you! I sought out this post to say thank you. I especially love the full screen writing mode–and how we can save from that screen!!! That is so great. Now all you need to do to send me to total-happy-land is give us a preview button from the full screen writing mode as well. Thanks so much for your hard work!
I’m enjoying the new dashboard. It’s a much cleaner and simpler layout…. snazzy! =)
The new dashboard has been very appealing. The new Full Screen writing feature is great as I often get pulled from one thing to the next. This allows me to really get my “sh*t” done. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
Thank you Jane!
Tried this out for the first time on my latest post and I have to say it’s brilliant. There is no doubt it helped me write more effectively and fluidly.
Dashboard wasn’t “broken” didn’t need ‘fixing.”
I was working on several drafts, all open, when the Dashboard was changed –WITHOUT Notice. I stopped writing.
I do not appreciate mommy/daddy blog Host: slapping a box on the DASHBOARD telling me to “up-grade” a browser.
Do you really REALLY think anyone Doesn’t KNOW –unless WP Says –with a big box –really???
As for the changes: “different isn’t necessarily better” –I don’t like any part of the “improved” Dashboard
–from stripped design to sans serif fonts.
One part of the Dashboard stopped working, in ALL browsers, so I’ll search forum to see if it’s
out for others.
~Varendil
You’re welcome: putting messages TO each/entire community on Dashboard/top strip was my idea, after
total system melt-down several years ago, though no one in WP has ever acknowledged.
And no, since this isn’t flattery do not expect you will publish, but will delete,
for whatever ’cause.’
I’m so disappointed that I won’t be able to use that wondrous IE6 anymore. 🙂
Change is hard.
Lets see how it works 😉
I’m really pleased to see WordPress has dropped support for IE6. I wish more companies would drop support for legacy browsers so we can move forward more easily with HTML W3C standards.
I am new to blogging so I do not have much experience with the old set up. It took me a while to figure out where the “blue screen shaped icon’ was until I accidentally hovered over it. I found this new advancement very intuitive and easy to use and easy to switch back and forth as needed. I like the lack of clutter. Clutter is one of the reasons I dislike using many traditional word processors. Good Job.

The tiny font is a major problem.
Effortless writing is, first of all, clear reading.
Mundabor
I like most of the upgrade, but I miss the “new post” button which I use the most. Now it’s tugged away within the broad range of stuff within the menu.
Thanks a lot… It turned out to be really helpful. Hope this drives me to finish my drafts and get regular into blogosphere…
Fighting distractions, indeed. Look what you’ve inspired: http://stepno.wordpress.com/2011/05/27/step-away-from-the-mouse/
🙂
like this..
awesome jane..!
Nice work, keep it up guys
Very amazing, but I miss the “new post” button in the dashboard I get used to… but I can easily use the wordpress bar.
Really nice
Tried this and it was great, next up is trying it on TV =)
LOVING the distraction-free writing area! THANK YOU !!!
Tina Fey?!?
What about Tina Fey?
I have to tell you that I am constantly impressed by the level of dedication of the WP team to providing new innovations for the community. I don’t use all of them and there have been some that I have not liked all that much; but most are terrific and, what is more important, it is clear that the WP team takes its job seriously and cares about its bloggers.
Many thanks for all the hard work.
John
It looks like in visual posting mode, the ability to change heading types (i.e. heading 1, heading 2, heading 3 – that rockin’ lil dropdown menu) has disappeared.. why is that? is that part of the new upgrade?
Cheers!
The distraction-free writing mode is beautiful, especially with my browser in full-screen mode. Here’s my first distraction-free post:
http://geocachechronicle.wordpress.com/2011/05/28/ground-zero-takes-wing/
this is really nice! 😀 the dashboard is gonna take time getting used to but the motivation to write still stands… and yes, its means alot to have replies on a post. adds to the motivation you know 😀
COOL AND BEYOND
Looks great in my Mac’s Safari. Let me try it then.
Hi Jane! Thank you for great article! WordPress has proven its awesome usability and friendship. As a blogger, I value all the upgrades it’s got, whether they are functional or just fashionable. Inspiration counts. At the moment I trying to find the best solution my psd’s to get published to WordPress. Any suggestions how to convert PSD to WordPress?
wonderfu !!
I started using WP only last week, so I never experienced the “old” environment. I was using another platform, but was immediately blown away by the ease with which I’m able to put a new post online or change the layout of the pages.
I can only say that I wish I discovered WP earlier… well, never to late to learn, right?
Congratulations and keep up the good work.
Raf
BTW… Where can I find the spellcheck feature? (It’s probably going to be somewhere right there biting me in the nose, but I keep missing it :o)
This was such an inspiring post. Thanks for it!
Thank you for this update, i will apply it as soon as possible.
I love you WordPress, glad I came back to you!
As a professional blogger I have used many different platforms and I just keep being reminded that you guys do it best for usability and plain common sense. Nice one!
Quick question,
When does this competition finish?
KTjazz – new blogger!
because of WordPress dashboard issues I had toggled the broken-page icon (compatibility mode) on IE9 addressbar and now the dashboard said I had old IE – should have note about this so that users don’t get puzzled – just turn off the compatibility mode by clicking again on the broken page icon
Agh. The new dashboard looks terrible in Mac OS 10.6.7 running Chrome 11.0.696.71. Getting lots of ‘ghost’ toolbars as I scroll the post edit window, and going into distraction free mode is similarly buggy. Tips of lines disappearing under the dotted frame, which itself is inexplicably only 1/4 width of my window (bearing no relation the width of the column in the blog).
Is there any way to switch back to the only interface until the early bugs are smoothed out?
Have you cleared your cache? I’m on the same os/browser combo and things work fine. A cached stylesheet may be the culprit.
Wow, great ideas! I’m definitely going to try the full screen writing. Sometimes I forget the number one rule of writing – just write. I definitely need to bear that in mind as I move forward. I forget that the distractions are just that – distractions. It’s difficult to remember that the more technology and instant communication becomes more plentiful. Thanks!
The Approve and Reply thing is really great. That’s the kind of improvement we’d like to see more at WordPress. We like the small improvements too (for instance, the new icons that make it easier to work with the editor), but the Approve and Reply is a leap forward. Good job 😉
I’m surprised that it really makes a big difference for me in writing with ease. I wasn’t expecting it to be a big deal, but I really appreciate the change. Here’s the post I made this morning. http://featheraniweda.wordpress.com/2011/05/30/self-mastery-and-transformation-in-spurts/
Thank you. I’ve already put your advice to good use, as should be obvious on my blog.
I am glad I read about this new feature. As someone who is new to WP, and blogging in general, I found the dashboard to be a little confusing at first. I never really thought of it as distracting until I tried DFW and then I realized how much better blogging can be! Thanks.
I love the new dashboard. It seems so much easier to use and easier on the eyes than the previous version. Thank you for the upgrade. The only thing I would say about the spell check feature is that when I did it, nothing popped up to tell me it was done, and if I had not scrolled through to see what was going on, I would never have realized that a couple of words were underlined in red. I guess I am just used to Office, where the program automatically scrolls to the first word underlined, and then to each of the others as needed.
As you requested, here is my blog post, written with the new dashboard: http://mysterycat75.wordpress.com/2011/05/30/a-day-of-rememberance/
Thanks for all the improvements. I especially like the distraction-free writing idea. I wrote my first post with it and now I’m a convert. After writing the text, I had to minimize the screen to insert photos. I’m wondering if you could hide the add images button behind a tab. That way I wouldn’t have to toggle back and forth to check my work. Here’s the link if you’re interested http://kimkircher.com/2011/05/30/why-adversity-is-good-for-you/.
don’t know much about the upgrade as I am just a beginner here… Blog number three I think over the years but I love your first paragraph and agree whole heartedly! you go girl
WordPress is my favorite! Thanks for the sweet change up action. I’m gonna go do some distraction free writing and maybe Rock the Casbah when I’m done.
great..mmuuuahhhhh!
This is good. Hope they implement an easier way to adjust font size & type in the future.
Looks good in Firefox 4! And the Dashboard is a lot faster. Thanks WordPress! 🙂
I used Windows 7 it’s so fast with IE9, nice.
Very clean! Blogging is no longer a chore 🙂
The improvement is massive and particularly fell in love with the distraction-free writing option. Good job WordPress!
LOVE the new dash!! I was zooming around at top speed before I stopped to wonder WHY. Thanks 🙂 its Perfection!
This innovation is a refreshing change from the “visual distractions” that constantly regale my eyeballs online. THANK YOU!
I tried DFW on my latest post (http://alittlelunch.com/2011/06/01/a-mixture-of-incongruous-elements/) and liked being able to concentrate on writing, as well as not having to read all the way across my monitor, as you mentioned. The only difficulty I encountered was when I began to insert images. They showed up on the Just Write screen in random places (not true-to-form), but I can live with that — I bounced back and forth between the “regular” screen and DFW and managed just fine. (Now if you’d just share this gem of an idea with the folks who muck up my e-mail screen… I want to JUST WRITE.)
Thanks again!
I’m totally stoked for all of this! I can’t wait to try everything out 🙂
Being a newcomer, I’ll take some time to get used to.
