As soon as a blogger publishes their first post, their first question is: Where’s all my traffic? Everyone assumes they’re the only one seeking attention, when in truth nearly everyone is. It takes time to build an audience and no one gets much traffic without putting in the effort.
Here at WordPress.com we want you to get more traffic, and we build features and services to help. It’s been awhile since we’ve told you about them, so here are our top recommendations:
- Update your About Page. One of the first things visitors to your site will want to know is something about who you are. If you don’t update your About page to include a short bio, and they find a generic page instead, they’ll be disappointed. But if you briefly explain (two paragraphs is plenty) what the blog is about, and who you are, they’ll be more likely to come back.
- Turn on Publicize. You can easily set up your WordPress.com blog to automatically share new posts out to your Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo or LinkedIn accounts. This increases your reach every time you publish a post.
- Turn on Sharing. With a few clicks, you can make it so any visitor can share a link to your post out to their social networks, their blog, or through email.
- Let readers subscribe by email. Email is often forgotten as a source of traffic. If you turn on the Subscriptions widget, people can choose to get notified of new posts on your blog, automatically, via email. It’s a great way to keep them connected to your blog without any extra work for you, or for them.
- Post regularly. Pick a schedule that works for you – once a day, once a week, once every two weeks, and stick to it. Mention that frequency in your About page, and put reminders on your personal calendar. It’s only when people can expect regular posts that they’ll be compelled to come back to see what you’ve written next. If you need ideas for posts, read and subscribe to DailyPost, where we give topic ideas and blogging advice every day. You can also use PressThis to quickly generate new posts while you are browsing the web.
- Write Well. It’s often unsaid, but better posts get more traffic. There’s no sense in posting every day, if every post is boring or poorly written. It takes time to develop interesting ideas, and to edit posts to be concise and typo free. If people find a careless writer at work, they won’t be back. What good is more traffic if the content they see isn’t good enough for them to choose to return?
- Pick good titles. Blog post titles are like newspaper headlines. They need to be short and interesting to get people to want to see what’s inside. It takes some thinking to get a title down to a short sentence, but it’s time well spent. On Facebook and Twitter, all people will often see is the title and your link.
- Link to bloggers like you. When you link to another blog, they’ll typically get notified (via a pingback) that someone has mentioned them. This will encourage them to visit your blog and, if they like what they find, link to you as well in their posts. But do it sparingly; too many links and we call it SPAM. If you find a post you like, excerpt a paragraph and link to the rest. Also check out Freshly Pressed and our Global Tags to find blogs with similar interests, and subscribe to their blog. You can use tags in your own posts so your work will surface there as well.
- Comment on other blogs like yours. Every comment is an opportunity to show how well you write and think. When people read a great comment, they’ll see your name, and the link to your blog, encouraging them to see what else you have to say. Identify good blogs on topics similar to your own, read and contribute sincerely.
- Respond to every comment you get. When people comment on your blog, they’ve invested a lot of their time. Reward them by answering questions and taking their feedback, and they’ll come back again. Also see how to get more comments.
- Take requests. Write a post requesting your readers (or your friends) to suggest topics to write about. Reach out to Facebook, twitter, or friends, for suggestions. Then let them know you’ve written about what they asked for. It’s a great way to make sure everything you write will have at least one reader.
- Pay for traffic. Web applications like StumbleUpon can bring visitors to your posts with rates starting at $.05 per visit. If you’ve just published a great post and you really want some feedback from visitors, this can be a good way to get started. Companies looking for broader distribution, including getting content seen by journalists, should try services like PR Newswire.
Often you’ll hear about get traffic fast schemes, but we don’t believe in those sorts of things. There’s not much magic or secrets necessary. The advice above, used thoughtfully, is more than sufficient to increase visitors to your blog.
Update: see what our latest research says about getting more pageviews.

This post is much needed especially at this crucial moment of my blog life.
So a Big ups to a blog saving post.
Cheers!! 🙂
Excellent post.
I recommend blogging primarily for *your own personal enjoyment* in topics that interest and excite your interests. Have you ever noticed the people that produce the very best in any endeavour – especially in the areas of writing, music, or art – are generally the ones that are most passionate about what they do?
The love, interest, and passion writing about the topics that interest you will shine through to your readers, and they will want to come back and read more, and be motivated to share with others.
So write for yourself, and you will find that you are really writing for others having the same intense and keen interests.
Kindest regards,
Stephen
the tips are worth noting ,right !
Thank you so much for these helpful tips. I agree with Eric that the key is to be patient. I’ve seen my numbers grow slowly, but surely, too.
The effort in writing quality posts and connecting with other bloggers by commenting on their blog truly pays off. I’d also suggest writing an email to a blogger you want to follow, it makes it so much more personal. The important thing for me is not so much the stats (although that would be nice!), but the relationships I’ve come to cherish.
I am a new blogger, so this post is very helpful. Thank you Scott!
Thanks for the reminders Scott… and I must add that bloggers are generally supportive and would read a great post even with typos (to err is human). Persistence is key; supporting others with likes and comments works and it does take bloody hard work to get more traffic! 🙂

When you would write about how to add and use google plus?
Google+ is available as an optional button for the Sharing Feature. Go to your dashboard->Settings->Sharing and you’ll find it there.
I love all of these reminders. Some of these things have been on my to-do list forever and this was just what I needed to finally cross them off. I’ve also added a few new things to that list too. Thank you.
This post is so very helpful.
Thanx a lot for this one.
I am new to blogging this year and have been working to learn all these tips–they really do help. One thing that I have noticed recently is that the time of day that I post seems to matter. At first, I was always aiming for fairly early in the morning, until I saw that I seemed to get more views when I posted later. Moving my aim to mid-day has really helped. Of course, I am sure each blogger needs to experiment to find their own “best” time. (Give it a week or so to see if it seems to make a difference for the better.)
Another hint is to be sure that when you are writing, you actually use words that define your subject–don’t just hint about it. This is how the search engines will be able to find your relevant post!
Thanks again for the tips, Scott! 🙂
Thank you for the updates : )
Thanks for these tips.
Good informative post. I agree with Scott, a simple post which connects with readers can get a lot of traffic. Happy blogging…. 🙂
It was really very informative
Hei Scott/// thanx, u make wordpress seems easier for me to use
Great post!
Thank you for the advice! 😀 I’ll keep it in my memory! (>w<)b
Thanks Scott
Thanks Scott for the valuable inputs on how to increase traffic !!! hope that these points are a good source to get rich traffic on my blog !!!
thanks for the tips. for me, all is true.
Thanks For Nice Information thanks again
All great bits of advice… especially email subscriptions (I have about 170 now!) and the Twitter / Facebook cross-posting! It makes it easy to be in many places at once. And don’t give up! You never know when something you blog about will get picked up by a PR site or hit the Freshly Pressedd page (I’m still waiting for THAT one!) and then *boom*…you’ve got readers! Consistency and dedication is key.
thank you for this great tip. Actually, i’m posting on my blog and treats it like my online journal. And since i also post educational topics, that’s where i get more traffic from. Thank you for this one. And feel free to visit my blog, too. 🙂
Good article, thanks, i’ve got something new. 🙂
Scott,
Thanks for sharing this valuable information , I’ve implemented some of this suggestions and I really seen my visitors are increasing thanks once again!
This is really helpful!! though posting regularly is sure a challenge!!
thanks for sharing
You guys are FABULOUS! This post was so helpful. Thanks for breaking all this down for us.
Our blog has been running 8 months now and still only getting about 2 veiws a day! Help meeee! LOL. This article helped me alot thanks
Dear Scott,
Thank you. This list is great and somehow (I guess not really planning it) I have been following some of your points- and they do work – reallly good! Got up to 100 on of the days 🙂 for my blog – that was great news 🙂 – I am not really interested in high numbers – I prefer people who are interested and concerned by what I have to say.
I come from a small country – Latvia (2.2million inhabitants), but I do write in English (for I was a diplomat and have many international friends and also my husband does not speak Latvian ;)) – so my biggest issue is: how to make my blog readable for my own people back in Latvia who don’t really understand English?
I would have time to translate most relevant posts, however – where do I post the translated version? Any tips would be highly appreciated. (My concerns are – if I would do it right after ENG version – the post becomes too long, If I creat a new post – it will be kind of confusing, I guess). With greetings Latvia’s first and only ex-Science Attache (Brussels 2004-2010) now from Tunis, Mrs Signe Martisune-Schwagrowski-Buyse
Why don’t you just post the translations on the same blog?
Thanks for sharing Scott.
Thank you very much. so clear
Timely ! Very useful.
Great post Scott! Thank you!
Thanks Scott for this practical post. Very helpful!
thanks 4 u share..
Thanks for this. I’m a new blogger and your advice is really useful
I want to know more friends, add me as friend and let us share.
Thanks for these useful tips and reminders! Good to get a nudge in the right direction every so often 🙂
Very useful for me as a new blogger 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing this! It’s really helpful! :D:D
Though some of these i know before, but still thank you for remembering these again.
Thank you, maybe i should add “about” to my blog… ^-^’
Good post. After writing about page. it definitely increased my traffic. People started to trust and support.
Excelente! Gracias!
Good suggestions:-) Number 5 is harder for me with my schedule because I like to write detailed posts and have pictures or video along with them which often takes me a lot of time to do. Because of this, I sometimes go for over a month or more without a new post. I would like to post more regularly, though. It’s just a timing thing for me.
wow thank u so much for this post! helped a lot 🙂
useful….thanks….happy sharing! 🙂
I am too am new to blogging. I found your ideas to be well thought out. I will certainly be putting some of them into practice. I have already started to use facebook to publicise my content to great effect.
Thank you Scott for such a great post. U really helped me with a lot of stuff in blogging. I wish u good luck!
Regards, Samira from Azerbaijan.
Nice helpful post !
pay for traffic? It’s stupid … I mean, I don’t want people reading me if they are not interested … other things are interesting, thanks. I’m actually thinking to start my blog after long time spent to improve my knowledge. I’ll follow your suggestions!
Thank your for your advice. Very useful… 🙂
Well thought and said, am looking forward to boast traffic to my blog. I think with this insight, when i apply them it will improve my site traffic. Thanks that was helpful
Thanks for the tips! How can I find my own blog using Google?
Thank you for the info..
Nice post!!! Thanks. Will need to get back to writing and more often…
thank you .ednik
Thank you for the tips. This has been a big help!
Scott, I do not see ‘Sharing’ Under Settings” Is this a plugin or patch to WP 3.2
Some of the features listed are only available on WordPress.com, including Publicize and Sharing. However you can get most of the same sharing features by downloading the jetpack plugin.
Great imput Thanks Chuck Howi
How nice to receive a piece in my junk file that is actually cogent, useful and surprisingly straight forward. I will save this!
Shouldn’t the Log In button precede the comment panel?
Probably the only situation where anyone would like to be neck deep in traffic.
I think it would be nice if the stats could provide some more data. For example the time ppl spend on my site and in which dayspan. Because I blog in German I think it is a bit harder to attract readers. Or it is just my imagination. 😀
Maybe I’m just naive, but I had NO idea you could pay for traffic. Crazy…
I’m stuck in a predicament between 2 of your recommendations, though: I have great traffic and lots of comments, and I do believe in responding to every one; however, this prevents me from posting as often as I’d like, because I spend a lot of time in the dialogue portion of the comments…
Any recommendations? Is it more important to create a dialogue (and engage readers) or post regularly (and gain consistency)?
Mikalee: its a good problem to have. There is no easy answer – you need to do both.
Thanks for the great insights Scott! Sound basics and common sense once again. What Masterclass?
Cheers, I’ll try out some of these things.
14. Let friends read your blog. It’s how I started once, back a wihle, it made me feel more relaxed about my writing to have people read it, that already liked me.
Wow, guess I gotta get to work!
or if i leave a reply here, maybe i’ll have a short-lived, but awesome spike in traffic. or maybe…just maybe, you’ll fall in love with ‘la vida loca’ and subscribe. either way, i will be content. 🙂
Great and usefull info Mr Berkun. i shall post this on my blog site and link to yours! have a good day.
Informative article… I do many things that you just mentioned! And they have helped me in good google ranking….
http://www.gplusdiscussion.com
Thanks for this great post! I already use all the features you mentioned. One little suggestion: it would be great if StumbleUpon was included in the “Publicize” feature!
Great tips to Get More Traffic besides it helps to get a better postiton in searches. Thanks
Thankyou for the very interesting item on ‘getting more traffic’ for blogs, etc – most of your points were very practical and obvious, but also too easily overlooked. I found it useful to have such a concise summary of ‘suggested guidelines’ that I can keep in one place.
My only concern about ‘sharing’ blogs with the wider medium, is that because I am generally a daily writer, the receipt of a message in other’s emails every day, to say that Bill has a new blog, I would feel would eventually become more of a nuisance value to the recipients. Hence at present, I simply depend on the occasional reader coming across my writings – and not to many of those have dropped by yet!! Nevertheless, I shall certainly take note of various aspects of the article.
thanks for sharing
All truth! I’m always amazed at the jump in hits after I’ve tweeted an old post that I’ve linked to in a new article. It helps to have “green” articles.
Great post and precious information and surely I’m gonna give it a shot; Thanks Scott!
Good tips, all of them, in a great post! Definitely things that needed to be said – thanks!
Great post, I really love the sharing feature, but I would say that my best traffic comes from email subscribers!
Halie
Hola! Thanks a bundle for the info, it’s much appreciated! 😉
I have not updated my about page for more than one year and still my traffic has increased 😀
Writing well is important
Making your readers get involved in your site works like magic as far as traffic is concerned. And if you have a niche site on a non populist subject, then I am not sure how useful the publicise feature will be.
A great reminder of all the things we can do. Well, not quite ALL!
I actually found this post useful. I was in limbo how i could share my stuff in all of my other accounts until i read this. Thank you!
thanks for your sharing, but keep on writing good articles is not easy.
Great pointers! I have incorporated them too!
nice share mate…
hope it works for me…
🙂
Great advice there, could not agree with you further. Lots of work ahead for most of us. Linking with other bloggers would do some trick. Better, ask other bloggers to exchange links. Question is how many will follow your request.
Thanks for your elaborate post, Happy bloggin’ .
Thanks for this post! Very informative and useful:-)
Have a nice weekend.
This is quite informative post which will help people to create and maintain a good online presence. Among all the steps mentioned I think it is essential to connect with the bloggers, this will make it easier to share and spread the information. I also agree with the point – respond to every comment; this will make the blog more interactive and people will voice their opinions freely. I think in addition to all the points mentioned above it is also essential to create an impressive presence on the social networking websites as that is also a great way of maintaining online presence.
Got these! So helpful! 😀
Indeed, I have only been blogging for one month and I am seeing the effort paying off; however, although I have attempted to comment on blogs wit similar interests or tags as my own, it is my experience that the bloggers do not respond to the comments.
Nonetheless, I am seeing a steady increase in my site traffic– even early in the morning when I awake and on the rare days when i do not post an entry. I have even been contacted by entities that have offered me opportunities to expand my reading audience.
Thanks for the tips!
“more that sufficient”
*than
Anyway, thank you. I’ll make sure my settings allow subscriptions and things! 🙂
Thanks! I’m new at this whole blogging thing, so this is really helpfull to me! I had no idea of how I was gonna get trafic, but i do now!
– Btw. Sorry for my spelling, I’m from Denmark, heh.
