We’ve written before about our efforts at WordPress.com to help you get more attention for your work. And we’re here again with a new feature: follow.
After weeks of experimentation with different designs, locations and names, we’ve determined the addition of a small, cute, little button at the bottom of your blog will dramatically help pageviews and retention.
Starting today, on all blogs, whenever someone who is not logged into WordPress.com visits, they’ll see this small little button in the bottom right corner. The button is mostly out of the way, but just noticeable enough before people leave.

And when a visitor clicks on the button, it smoothly slides open, revealing a simple way to follow the blog without having the burden of checking back on their own to see if there’s anything new. They can put their email address in, and will be notified whenever your blog has a new post.

Questions we expect to be frequently asked:
1. Why is it called Follow and not Subscribe? Good question, as many designers here at WordPress.com debated this, including me. Although the functionality is similiar to the Email subscription widget, after testing various prototypes, we learned more people clicked on the button and signed up if it were called Follow rather than Subscribe. We also know subscribe suggests to some its something you pay for, whereas follow has no such connotation.
2. I don’t like it. How can I turn it off on my blog? Easy. Go to your Dashboard. Click on Settings, then Reading, then Email. Sorry you don’t like it – but we understand. If you change your mind, this is also the place to go to customize the message new followers (subscribers) will see.
3. Will other subscription features also have their name changed? We are carefully studying the impact of different names on existing features. We only change names when we have evidence it helps our bloggers and the benefits outweigh the annoyance of the change. We don’t change feature names to be fashionable or to emulate other services that might rhyme with “critter” or “shmacebook”.
4. Why don’t I see the button? The follow button only appears for users not logged in to WordPress.com. If you want to follow a WordPress.com blog, and are already logged in, simply use the follow button that already appears in your admin bar at the top of the screen. If you want to see the new hotness, log out of WordPress.com and go to any blog, including your own, to see it. To log out, go to your admin bar at top of the screen. Click on “Me”, then click on “Log Out”.
5. Why did you put something on my blog that changes how it looks? We know you want complete control over your blog’s appearance, and that’s why we’ve built so many themes, widgets and customizations for you to use. But here the data was strong enough for the positive effect of this small little button to turn it on. We’re making sure you know about it and know how to turn it off if you don’t want to use it. In the future we expect to add more ways for visitors to follow your blog, which will give visitors and bloggers more of what they want.
Is there any chance of adding it as a plugin for self hosted blogs? 🙂
Okay,I checked out the FOLLOW button. As I said already I think this is a good idea.
What happened to ‘Think Big’? It is too small and too tucked away. I know I am busy and read blogs quickly and move on and may not notice the button.
Fair enough, most readers will get to know about the Follow button. Busy people need good and clear aid-memoirs.
Thanks
Robert Denton
you must be reading our minds! thank you
wonderful and neat…. i would love this on my .org blog too
Bonjour
it’s come a pitty because a description too short (as usual)
W’d you please clearly add with the new option ‘follow button’ the benefit compared to those basics featured under a post -which are:
(sorry in french:)
x M’aviser par courriel de nouveaux commentaires.
x Avertissez-moi par courriel des nouveaux articles
OR, (as a future tool beside):
By the end, please suggest a language translation, of yours news.(!).
Kindly
Jean-Marc
This is why I prefer WordPress.com 🙂
interesting
Thank you.
Good addition and excellent explanation, thank you.
Great idea !
I don’t see any Follow button too, however :
http://www.astrasuite.com/astrablog/
No option for Email as well under Settings->Reading
Do I need to update WordPress or something ?
Thanks
wow looks a cool feature! thanks so much 🙂
Thanks. You makes us feel like being a family in wordpress.com.
Thanks again for the smart add to our blogs.
p.s. I also agree that the no. of followers have the option to be hidden, businesses with new blogs like ours won’t find it flattering to have few followers. We will turn the number on when we have a good number of followers.
I’ve just recently wanted to know how to get more traffic to my blog – and this is a great way. I have also been learning about following OTHER blogs. How fun it’s been to read other peoples’ stories and posts and follow them!
Thanks!
please i want a customize blog address and e-mail but i don’t how to go about to make payment here. It’s complex to understand, please show me the steps to follow to create my customize blog/e-mail
thanks
THANKS!
So can I remove Email Widget from my sidebar? I mean, wouldn’t that be redundant?
Very cool. Any chance of making it a plug-in so those of us self-hosting can have it?
Hi! thank you so much! a good idea but…I don’t know if my new followers would scroll down ’till the end of my blog for following me….I have my own “follow” widget and my new followers can see it better
Thanks for this great feature. I agree that ‘subscribe’ has off-putting conotations. Thanks, too, for the excellent way you communicate changes.
Clarifying my last comment: I meant being able to edit the text of the popup – not the Follow button itself. (I’m not particularly a fan of broadcasting number of followers/subscriptions/etc. for instance, but there’s no way to remove that from the popup’s text.)
What would be really cool is to have this feature on my other site too http://anationbeguiled,com parked on wordpress.org
Love this feature. Cute and clean. Thanks WordPress!
Like the idea – but would also like the functionality to modify/customize the copy/message in the pop-up.
I like the idea of a “Follow” button. However, when I checked my WP blogs (yes I logged out first) it wasn’t there. I also can’t find the Email option in the “Reading” settings of my dashboard.
Wassup?
I’ll add my vote for allowing customized text. I’m okay with the word “follow”, but I’d prefer the word “readers” to “followers”. My “About the blog” page makes it pretty clear that I’m not trying to gather “followers”.
As for the word “subscribe”, a change to the widget heading took care of that on my blog – customizable text in action… 😉
Aside from that nitpick though, it’s a nice feature…
A very cool feature.
It is fantastic, I love it!!!! My only problem is that I am self-hosting my blog 😦 yikes, how do I get this stylish function or something similar on my self hosted site? I really really want it!
I love the addition of a “Follow” button! Unfortunately since I am using Typekit on my blog, the tag for that is currently covering up the follow button my my blog!
Are you all going to be resolving this conflict??
Great add! Non-intrusive is the key.
I like it. And “subscribe” does have negative connotations.
I love “follow” but cannot get it using my WP email http://darasattic.com“. Is it because I am not logged in, or, is this for other email addresses I use such as gmail? Also, what else is available for better marketing aside from facebook and google that also post my posts from my WP site? PS I don’t use mobile or twitter. Good work and look forward for solution to join. Dara the Collector
I would use support for comments but email was suggested to comment. Don’t see forums on this page and switched per instruction to Facebook. Dara the Collector aka dara Goldstein on Facebook (I think) ordarag54@gmail.com.
ever since that follow button showed up on my blog – people have been following me on my way to work – in the supermarket and I just heard a knock on the door. Still – I think it’s a good addition and I love wordpress
Hello Scott, im highly impressed that you have been answering all the questions!!!
Not sure if you have answered this one, but i use wordpress as my web site platform and would love to add follow button to my own Site
I tried to find a PlugIn for it and not sure which one to download
Can you please send me a link to the plug in if it is available to add to my own www
http://www.investmentproperty-melbourne.com.au
thanking you
Stephen
Thanks for making it easier for others. It also makes it easier for me. Since I am barely literate about the blogging requirements, anything you do to make it even simpler is very much appreciated.
this is a very nice add because the visitor doesnt have to be a wordpress.com user but just a simple visitor for the namimbia desert that has seen your blog through his tablet, does he has to be a wordpress user? the follow button just rocks, and unlocks wordpress for higher performance levels:D
I understand why it’s called ‘follow’. But, if you see in my blog both the twitter and the subscribe thing says follow. Too many follows! 🙂
Looks great! Do you think it will be available on “Jetpack” (already plugged in) for us users that are self-hosting our wordpress.org blogs?
Thank you!
Great job!
Next, please make some access to use widget with java script..
Would love to see the ability to style this (don’t know yet if I can thru CSS) mainly to change the color.
I would use that, if I could change all text in this widget to my own – my readers are Polish and they don’t want to read anything in English. Also, there’s a text “Powered by WordPress”, which disturbing me.
This follow button is not showing up on my blog. What do I need to do? http://personalrecipe.com
excellent … making life so much more simpler… 🙂
You know on some websites, they have a “Feedback” button on the left side of the page that it out of the way but sometimes is the first thing you see? That’s where the “Follow” button should be.
now i just need people to actually follw me. hahaha 🙂
This is nice! Thanks!
great feature. When it will be apply to self-hosted WordPress installs.
I like the idea of anything that will, hopefully, improve visitors ability to be read my blog. Any other tips on improving traffic?
That is a great achievement, and I do suggest there should be a “number count” on the blog for the owner and the visitors to know how many visitors
have already visited the blog.
tammyhines
reblogged this on tammyhines.
People are certainly not intimidated by leaving comments here. How in H*** do I stop getting comments. I don’t love WordPress so much that i want my inbox filled with less than profound comments. Get me out of here!
I like it… Follow me @ customair.wordpress.com
Cool idea. “Follow” definitely soothes one’s psyche more than the somewhat serious “subscribe.”
está bueno…
Awesome thanks! It can be a hassle for people to have to check back at my Zim blog every five seconds to see if I’ve posted, now they’ll know!!!! 😀
Love it!
Sounds like a plan to me! Anything to help out my non-existant visitor count! 😀 I have no complaints.
Chad,
ImFinallyFree.wordpress.com
Good idea, just what a young new blog like mine needs. Thank you.
Yes it’s a good idea and does make it easier, BUT when people are just starting to build up followers, it’s not helpful to have the number of followers showing, people tend to want to assoicate themselves with a blog with a larger number of followers, so is there any way the number of followers can be removed until perhaps it reaches 100 ? Also if you’re marketing your blog to advertisers etc it may be more helpful to slightly inflate your number of followers at least while you’re getting going, having the number following you so transparent is not always helpful, can the author decide whether to have the number following or not ? Hope you can help, Monica
I wouldn’t recommend inflating numbers. Every blog starts somewhere right? 🙂 Perhaps try the tips here.
interesting, hope it works and bring loads of traffic.
THERE WAS A FOLLOW BUTTON?!?!?!?!?
YES. THERE IS NOW!!!!!
Do we have the option to not show the number of followers we currently have? Thanks 🙂
The number of followers is built in. There is an option to turn the entire button for logged out users on or off from the Settings → Reading page.
Thanks….I think the follow button is a great idea! I appreciate all that you do to make wordpress better. It’s a great site.
I also turned it off–from my pov there is no reason to say how many people are already subscribing. This is not Facebook. In any case the number is inaccurate because it does not include the greater number of people who are “following” via feedburner, Google reader etc
Thank you for this! I am SO NOT techinical….just like to write, and thanking you for being techinical so I can write and share.
Ooops- and spell!
This looks useful
Is there a way to track the number of followers?
Its a nice cute little button…I opened my blog in another browser just to have a look at it…again and again
Thank you, I like this idea!
I don’t see it on my blog. Is it a widget that I have to add?
Make sure you’re checking while logged out. The new Follow button will show for logged out viewers while logged in users can see it in the dashboard at the top of the page.
Only had my blog running for less than a week and love the simplicity of the social networking integration. Great work!
I was gonna ask why it was only available for people who aren’t signed-in to WP but then you already answered that!
Brilliant. Nice little new feature.
This is a pretty great idea and better one. Thanks for the good work.
I am truly thankful for your suggestions……:)
Hi…Scott
Thanks for this feature. but I hope the text on “the pop up” can be costumized or automatically be adlusted with the each type of language that used on blog 🙂
good job (again)!
cool feature
Yes WordPress always the best
Yay! This is fantastic!!!!!!
nice feature ad. just learning about traffic as i realize people are reading my blog. thanks
http://www.foundobjectbeachart.wordpress.com
This is great! Is there a way to add the new Follow button to WordPress.org websites via JetPack??
