Over the years one of the most frequent requests on WordPress.com has been to allow bloggers to earn money from their blog through ads. We’ve resisted advertising so far because most of it we had seen wasn’t terribly tasteful, and it seemed like Google’s AdSense was the state-of-the-art, which was sad. You pour a lot of time and effort into your blog and you deserve better.
Well we think we’ve cracked it, and we’re calling it WordAds.
Blogs are unique and they shouldn’t be treated like every other page on the internet. There are more than 50,000 WordPress-powered blogs coming online every day, and every time I explore them randomly I’m always surprised and delighted by how people are using the platform to express themselves.
As a WordPress user you’re breathing rarefied air on the internet: the Creators, the Independents. Creative minds aren’t satisfied being digital sharecroppers on someone else’s domain, and you want to carve out your own piece of the internet and have a space that you’re proud of because it’s so… you.
If you’re going to have advertising on your site, it darn well better be good, and beginning with our partnership with Federated Media we’re ready to start rolling out WordAds here on WordPress.com.

My partner and I run a World Cinema website http://www.subtitledonline.com/ and we currently have about 50,000 visitors /month with the intention for a lot more once we bring out the latest site upgrade and launch a new marketing campaign.

This is a great idea. I have been blogging with you guys for almost three years now. I was wondering when something like this was going to come around. I was considering self-hosting but this has won me back.
I do wonder how it will compare to Google’s Adsense though.
Jon, from test runs, what would you say is a ballpark figure in ad clicks/blog views to break even versus the cost of the custom domain? Or is it too early for that kind of data?
Will those who opted in for the program be getting any updates soon, or will we have to wait till sometime in Q1 next year?
My only beef is that there is very little information about the program. I don’t doubt it will be beneficial for blog users, but I feel like I have nothing to go on at the moment.
It looks like Foodbuzz is part of Federated Media group–I already have a Foodbuzz ad on my blog–would this affect my existing Foodbuzz contract?

I would like to click “I Like it” but there is a problem in the page: “http://en.wordpress.com/apply-for-wordads/” because “Pick topics for this blog” link doesn’t pop up anything (javascript produces no results) and consequently “Submit” button doesn’t work. Moreover, page “https://wordpress.com/support/advertising/” is blank. Can you help me?

Hi can new blogs access this too? I have had a personal blog with wordpress for a few years but am setting up a new blog which I would need to advertise on. If I could use wordads this would be perfect as I love the setup of wordpress and would hate to have to go back to blogger!
How many views a day do you think one should expect before considering the WordAds option?
