Trying out new themes is fun, isn’t it? I think so! The thing about changing my blog’s theme that has traditionally bugged me, though, is the 10-15 minutes right after you click “Activate” when you have to rush through uploading a new custom header, maybe resetting the background, fiddling with a new sidebar configuration, and other transition adjustments so that people won’t see your site in a half-switched state. Maybe I’m overly sensitive to that — I don’t like to leave things half-painted either — but luckily for me we’ve just finished a new feature to improve this very thing. It is my great pleasure to introduce you to our new theme customization tool* and say good-bye to half-painted websites.
The customizer provides a live preview as you play with Appearance settings, and can be used to customize a live preview of a new theme before you activate it, or to make changes to your existing theme. It allows you to edit the site title and tagline, custom headers and backgrounds, navigation placement, front page selection, and other options that vary by theme. It works with both free themes and premium themes. Shall we take a test drive?
Imagine you want to change themes. As you are browsing on the Themes screen, notice the new “Live Preview” link and click it.

You’re taken to the customizer. As you make changes, the preview in the right-hand part of the screen updates live so you can get things just right.

When things look the way you want them, click the Save & Activate button in the lower left (or Save & Purchase if it is a premium theme) and boom, your new theme and custom settings are live!
You can also use the live preview feature to customize your existing theme. On the themes screen in your dashboard, you’ll now see a “Customize” button that launches the previewer.

And don’t worry, you still have access to the regular screens for adjusting these and other features. Just use the navigation for the Appearance section like you always have.

So, please try it out, and let us know what you think in the comments! I hope you like it as much as we do. If you hit any snags, let us know in the forums so that we can help.
But wait, there’s more!
Yes, more! Here are a couple of smaller additions also aimed at making it easier to customize your site and make it look just the way you want it.
- When choosing a custom header image, you can now choose from your Media Library. I looove this, because I have uploaded the same header image at least a dozen times to re-use it when I changed themes.
- For themes that support it, custom headers now have a recommended size rather than a fixed required size, so you can be flexible with the height and width of your header images. I love this too, because sometimes I really like a theme but the header image I want to use is taller or shorter than the theme design allows. Now, the power is in your hands to decide! The goal is for as many themes as possible on WordPress.com to support this feature, but you can see if we’ve added it to yours yet by checking the list of supported themes.
And one last thing…
If you know HTML, you can now add links and a little bit of formatting to your image captions. This is great for people who want to link a photo credit to the photographer’s blog or to a Creative Commons license, or want to make some text bold or italicized. At some point in the future we may add a WYSIWYG option, but for now you’ll just need to learn some basic HTML tags if you want to use this one. Just type the HTML right into the caption field in the image uploader, and your links will appear like magic. So this:

becomes this:

Make a new friend and save a life today!

I’ve been wanting this feature for four years now, so I’m really excited.
Have fun with these new features!
*Fun Fact: While this feature was in development, it was originally conceived as a wizard, or guided walkthrough. We codenamed it Gandalf. 🙂
This new addition is a strong, adorable kitten. 😀 I think I shall adopt it! 😉
I love all the changes. My page doesn’t even resemble the original (Shaan~by Specky Geek ) theme I have it tweaked so much 🙂
Nice post. I think I should change my themes more regularly to keep things fresh.
It’s about time! This has been one of the features that has most annoyed me about WordPress. I never understood why we weren’t allowed to play with our customization before it went alive. I knew you guys could fix that. Now…if you would just get over your restrictions on the type of code we can embed in the widgets I’d be a super happy WordPress user. Until then I’m just a happy user.
Restrictions on things like JavaScript and Flash aren’t intended to annoy, but to keep your site safe. Since WordPress.com is one big multisite WordPress installation, we need to make sure no one’s site could be adversely affected by choices other users made. We hate to see anyone leave, but since these restrictions are not likely to change any time soon, if you feel your site needs this functionality, it might be time to consider self-hosting, where you could use any kind of code you want. If you’re interested in that, we have a guided transfer service to do the work for you.
Thank you for the reply Jane. I doubt I will be leaving anytime soon. I have hosted my blog on other sites and eventually settled on WordPress because despite the restrictions on JavaScript and Flash the other functionality has kept me loyal. I may consider self-hosting in the future but at this time it’s not a step I am looking to take.
Of course it sounds wonderful. Where is it? It would really help if the link were obvious.
Go to Appearance → Themes in the left hand navigation. It is on the regular theme browsing screen, in the location shown in the screenshot above.
It’s on the theme browsing screen, as shown in the screenshot. To get there, use the navigation on the left-hand side of your dashboard, and go to Appearance → Themes.
now this is a great update!!
i’ll second the request for an option to save layouts/theme settings so one could quickly switch between them without much fuss.
I can’t understand how to use this improvement 😦 Where and when exactly am I going to see ” Live preview”? I can’t find it 😦
Go to Appearance → Themes from your dashboard navigation. The Live Preview Link will be under each theme listing, where the old link for Preview was, just as it’s shown in the screenshot above.
Oh yes! This is something I was waiting for a long time! Now, I can change themes with no worries. Thanks! Gracias! Cheers!
This is fantastic, a feature that I’m looking forward to using! Great development.
yay, this is exactly the feature I need when changing themes. love you, WP!
This finally gave me the confidence to change my photography website so thanks for the updates. Keep them coming!!!!
Thank you for this wonderful new feature!
Am I the only one who is missing the old preview? I would regularly have a look at different themes, but with this new one, all I get is a big blank page next to the bar that tells me which theme I am trying out. Am I doing something wrong – you just click on live preview, and then you should see your page with the alterations you can make, right?
Yes, the live preview should do the same thing as the old preview, but with the added functionality of letting you adjust custom header images, backgrounds, etc. If you are getting a blank page instead of a preview, something is definitely wrong. Please contact support for assistance.
I love these additions! Though I’m confused, because when I use the Live Preview and then try to select a header image, it opens the file-open menu, and I don’t see any way to get to the media gallery instead. Is that feature ALSO only supported by a handful of themes?
The media library support is only on the actual Appearance → Header screen so far, because it has fairly complicated code. We’ll be working in the future to integrate more of the Appearance management into the live preview.
Thanks for the update and the information. That further enhancement would be great… Knowing how the images will look in a new theme is often an important piece of knowing whether I want to use that theme or not… and it’s kind of a pain to scramble to rework images after a theme change if it doesn’t work as expected.
Very helpful update.
Thanks.
Forgive the (possibly) ignorant questinon, but in reference to this: “As you are browsing on the Themes screen, notice the new “Live Preview” link and click it,” where the heck do I find the “themes screen?”
When I go to the Themes Showcase page, all I see below each preview pane is a link offering “Quick Details.”
Any help would be appreciated!
In your dashboard, use the navigation on the left to go to Appearance → Themes.
Thanks, Jane. I saw after the fact that you had already answered this question — apologies for the repeat!
No worries, always happy to help!
FANTASTIC new feature! Thank you for adding it!
Live Preview is a step in the right direction but what about those of us who use the custom design add on and need to test the CSS out? It’s not exactly easy right now.
Great question. The new Customizer is just the first step! We’ll be adding on to it, so watch this space. 🙂
Thank you
Why don’t the widgets show up in the live preview. I have a flag counter widget, will I loose the stats from this widget if I try a new theme?
It’s probably because the new theme you are previewing has different sidebars than the old one. If it doesn’t show up automatically, after you activate the new theme, go to Appearance → Widgets in your dashboard and you can retrieve the flag counter widget from the Inactive area and reinstate it right away.
nice quotes…
It’s helping me
How appropriate I just changed MINE TODAY lol THANKS!
This is truly awesome – as one who likes to try out new themes when they come up, I LOVE that I now can get a real sense of how each theme would fit my blog. And the new flexibilities for header images and image captions, I’ve been waiting for too. Thanks!
Great!
I love the HTML in the image caption. I knew this day would come.
Was surprised and pleased as I went to complain to someone that this didn’t exist, and suddenly it did! Thanks for continuing to improve the usability of a lovely product.

I love it!
Thank you very much.
It’s awesome for one to try out the new themes thanks.
I’m new only to collide with this new tool. I tell you it’s fantafabulous, and I can’t wait to pamper my blog.
I’m completely new to blogging. Thanks for making it simpler before I’ve even started. Looking forward to joining the blog community.
