Last month we introduced you to the new Jetpack mobile app. Today we’d like to share information on some upcoming changes to the WordPress app and dig into the key differences between the WordPress and Jetpack apps to help you decide which one is right for you. We’re here to help you make an informed decision.
What’s changing in the WordPress app?
Until now, the WordPress app has included a range of Jetpack-powered features focused on managing, growing, and keeping tabs on your site. In early March 2023, we’ll be streamlining the WordPress app to focus on the writing and publishing basics. As part of that update, Jetpack features will be removed from the WordPress app and only be available in the Jetpack app. To continue using your favorite Jetpack features, switch to the Jetpack app today.
Why are there two apps?
WordPress comes in more than one flavor and is used for everything from newsletters to blogs, enterprise apps to high-traffic publishing networks. After listening to feedback from a diverse range of users and the wider WordPress community, it became clear that there are two main sets of expectations about what a mobile WordPress experience should look like.
With that in mind, we set about rethinking and designing two distinct ways for you to use WordPress on the go:
- The Jetpack app is intuitive, free-to-use, and puts the full WordPress experience in your pocket, whether you’re new to publishing on the internet or a seasoned veteran. You get all the essential tools that come with the WordPress app, plus a suite of features for growing your site. Discover new content and communities with the Reader, track your site’s performance on Stats, and get notified about comments and reactions with Notifications. You can download the Jetpack app today.
- The updated WordPress app will focus on the basics of writing and publishing. If you’re only looking for the essential tools you need to publish on the go, with support for offline editing and the ability to upload media straight from your phone’s camera roll, this might be the best app for you.

With the new Jetpack app, you’ll still be able to focus on publishing, but you’ll also have the added benefit of powerful site management and growth tools. The app is free to use. Once you make the switch, you’ll find all the same features that you enjoy with the WordPress app right there, at no extra cost.
How do I make the switch to the Jetpack app?
To make a seamless switch to the Jetpack app from the WordPress app, follow these steps:
- Make sure you have the latest version of the WordPress app installed.
- Download the Jetpack app for iOS or Android.
- Open the app, and you’ll be “auto-magically” logged in with all your data and settings in place, including locally stored content, saved posts, and other in-app preferences.
After you’ve installed the Jetpack app, we’d advise you to delete the WordPress app. Managing your site across both apps is currently unsupported and may lead to issues such as data conflicts that are best avoided.

I switched to the Jetpack app about 3 months ago and it’s a lot more useable than the wordpress version

Yes, there is! Not every WordPress website utilizes Jetpack. WordPress.com sites have it built-in, but for sites that are hosted elsewhere, Jetpack is a separate plugin and service.
Yes, my website is Jetpack-enabled WordPress.org website. Oh, so WordPress app is for those people running WordPress.org website but not using Jetpack plugin? A bit confusing.
Love the jetpack app… apart from the annoying Prompt. Is there a way to delete it?
Thanks for your feedback! Look out for version 21.7 of the app, currently scheduled for February 20th, which will include an option to turn off the blogging prompts. That option will be available under the three dot menu (which displays alongside the prompt) and under My Site → Settings.

I am confused by the message I got today about Jetpack. I do all the maintenance of our website using the desktop web browser version on MacOS, and never write or edit anything on my phone. Am I affected by these changes? For example, are you removing the stats capability from what I currently use? Please advise!
These changes won’t affect how you manage your site using your web browser. All the features you use, including stats, will continue to be available for you on your desktop device. 🙂
The Jetpack mobile app serves as an optional companion for managing your site. If you have an interest in the Jetpack app’s features, then you could install it and explore to see how you like it. Doing so will provide an extra way for you to manage your site while on the go, but won’t change or take away anything from your usual browser experience.

Would you please include ad revenue in the stats section of the Jetpack app? It’s annoying to go to the desktop site to see this data. Please make this part of the mobile experience ASAP. Thanks!

There doesn’t seem to be a Jetpack app for the iMac. So I assume, since I do almost all of my composing for my WordPress site on the iMac that I just continue using it. Is that right?
Yes, you’re absolutely right that only the mobile app is changing. If you’re on a desktop device, you can either continue editing your site through WordPress.com in a web browser or using the WordPress.com desktop app.
It is good to know that the changes are only on the mobile device the desk top will remain as WordPress. I normally write a post on the mobile device if I am travelling then come and edit it on the desktop so if I no longer have WordPress on mu mobile device it means I can only write post on my desktop that is the confusion I am having. Would appreciate more clarification please.
On the face of it, Jetpack app seems more features loaded than WordPress. And it is also working smoothly, hence there is no point in sticking with WP app.

These changes won’t affect the way you manage your site on your Mac, no. Only the mobile app is changing. You can either continue editing your site through WordPress.com in a web browser or using the WordPress.com desktop app.
I have over five years of statistics on my blog hosted on wordpress.com that I do not want to lose!!! Does the switch to Jetpack preserve all of this data or are all the stats counters reset to zero (I sure hope not!)??
I assure you that your stats are important and we wouldn’t reset them to zero. All of your data will be preserved as part of the migration process. You’re right that Jetpack-powered features, including stats, are still available in the WordPress app at the moment. However, they’ll be moved from the WordPress app to the Jetpack app in early March. If you’d like to continue using them, I recommend following the steps to migrate to the Jetpack. I’ve come to enjoy the statistics provided by the current application. Will this change add any new features that improve this service?
For example: I’d love to be able to drill into the page or post metrics to see what countries my viewers are from, or the viewing history of viewers.
Have you considered:
[*] giving us the ability to select which sections we want to see or not see?
[*] Some countries are large enough that just calling out the country of viewers doesn’t mean much. Can we have a state/province drill down say for countries like Australia, Canada, US, UK, China, India, Russia, France, or Germany?
[*] If someone just likes a post, I’d love to have a means of thanking them for stopping by. It would be polite and maybe even help me build community. Currently I have no way to just thank them.
I noticed the inclusion of “free to use” wording for one app but not the other. Just wondering if that’s a slip or an indication of things to come.

Selfishly, I wish we either still had one app (people not using Jetpack just wouldn’t have the Jetpack features), or that the team had gone with different naming such as WordPress and WordPress Light. I’m sure it’s just habit, but I find myself looking for the WordPress app, panicking for a brief moment when I don’t find it, and then remembering that to post to my *WordPress* blog, I have to use an app that doesn’t have WordPress in its name. I have an issue with the writer’s prompt. Most of them are related to topics which aren’t included in my blogs. Is their a way to personalize the same in accordance with the subject matter on which the writer usually posts about?

I am confused. I have enjoyed using WordPress, switching to Jetpack sounds like WordPress no longer wants my business. I have to pay more for Jetpack. And what about my subscription to WordPress? This really sucks!
Hi there, I think it will help if I clarify that WordPress.com sites like stanthonywalnuttree.blog have always used Jetpack to power the site functionality (and we also make a Jetpack plugin that folks with WordPress sites on other providers can install) so switching to the Jetpack app is perfect for your situation. Essentially you’ve been Jetpack all along without realizing it, so you’re not really switching.
So in this case you will be using a app that has a new name (Jetpack) but the same functionality you have always enjoyed with the WordPress app. Also this will not affect your subscriptions at all, it won’t affect any of your current workflows, you’ll just be using an app that does the same thing even though it has a new name. 🙂
Thank you for the clarification is it possible to have both apps? What made me unsettled was the idea of replacing WordPress with Jetpack I guess I have been using WordPress ever since it started more than a decade ago and am so attached to it. If it is possibly I do not mind using both apps..

Your site is hosted on WordPress.com, and we automatically update it to the latest version of WordPress. So, you can safely switch to the Jetpack app and continue managing your site.

Yes, that’s possible. What we don’t recommend is having both apps on the same device, as it may lead to issues such as data conflicts.

So, I’m not the only one who asked, but I’ve not yet seen a definitive answer.
It sounds like I might be able to keep both apps on my phone, but I’m concerned by the words “transfer data” from one app to the other.
Could someone please give a definite answer regarding keeping both apps on the same phone?
Stuff like:
Will both apps have updated data (posts, comments, etc.)?
Will changes in posts made in one app be reflected in the other app and on the dashboard when on the PC?
Does enabling the Jetpack app disable/deprecate the WordPress app? By that, I mean more than the planned March 2023 deprecation of the app?
Note: the comments guidelines state not to use comments for “asking questions” . . . This seems like a strange request, given this post is about informing the users about the app.
Hi, it’s not recommended to keep both apps. Managing your sites across both apps is currently unsupported and may lead to issues such as data conflicts. Once the migration of the Jetpack app is complete, you can safely uninstall the WordPress app.
As for the WordPress app, we’re not depreciating it. It will still be available, but it’ll focus only on the basics of writing and publishing. With the Jetpack app, you’ll be able to use all the tools and features of WordPress.com, like Stats, Reader, notification, and more.

Yes, your site would still be protected. To manage spam, though, you’ll need the app. So, it’s recommended that you switch.

Hi! The apps are free to use, so no pricing differences there. And if you’ll use the steps recommended, your posts won’t be lost.
WordPress is just ruining the blogging experience with frequent and unnecessary updates. How to ruin a good platform, learn from WordPress. I couldn’t the logic of using the Jetpack app when all the things of Jetpack already exist in the WordPress app.
What if we lose our blog posts in switching from the WordPress app to the Jetpack app?
Hi, you won’t lose any posts or pages as those are synced to our servers. When switching, the Jetpack app will automatically log you in and migrate all your data. Once this is done, you can safely delete the WordPress app.

This is for anyone who wants to manage their WordPress.com and self-hosted sites on their phone or tablet. If you already use the WordPress app, switching to the Jetpack app is recommended, so that you continue to have all those extra features like Stats, the Reader, notifications, and more.
I usually upload my photo directly from my phone and I was able to access but it is more complicated now. I used to be able to start typing right after clicking the photo to use. Now, I have to get into the app first and go to media to select a photo. It seemed easier for me using a phone the other way..

If I switch to Jetpack on my tablet, will I still be able to update posts on both tablet and laptop? Also, when I give users my website address, will I still use the WordPress.com address?

When I installed the Jetpack app it said I needed to remove the WordPress app. Since my main interest is in using the WordPress app to update my site and posts, it’s not helpful to have to delete it so I can get stats from Jetpack. If I’m forced to choose between the two, I’ll keep the WordPress app.
I always use WP in my browser, on both my laptop and my phone. I’ve never downloaded the WP app. Will it change automatically in my browser or do I have to download the JP app to use on both? I like the flexibility of updating my blog through the browser on any platform since I travel a lot.

Hi there, I have deleted the WordPress app and installed the Jetpack one. I run four blogs/websites – three of them seem to have synched okay, and their posts are visible in the Jetpack app. For the fourth blog, I can see the stats, but it is showing that there are no posts. I have raised a ticket twice with Jetpack asking for help with how to resolve this, but have not had a response. Please could you advise the best way forward?

Is there a stats widget for iOS in the making? It was one of the most important features of the WordPress-app for me.
The stats widget is a Jetpack/WordPress.com feature, so switching to the Jetpack app would be the best thing for you!
But that’s the thing – Jetpack doesn’t show up in my available widgets.

Are the people with self-hosted WordPress sites the same people who are publishing from a mobile app? Why does this consolidation make more sense than those with a Jetpack account using a simple streamlined Jetpack app to monitor their site? This is so confusing and annoying. I’m never going to publish from a mobile app, why do I need all this in the Jetpack app? There should be one app for WordPressing and a different app for a Jetpacking. Sometimes I just wish developers would stop developing.
Self-hosted users have been using the WordPress app to manage their sites. Some of those use Jetpack features and some do not. We are rehoming Jetpack features in the Jetpack app, because the WordPress app will be focused on core features going forward.
If you install the Jetpack app, you’ll find it’s very much like the WordPress app you’ve known. You won’t have to use publishing tools if you only need stats and whatnot, and folks who used the WordPress app for Jetpack features in addition to publishing will have a familiar experience in the Jetpack app, too.
Uh huh…. That doesn’t actually make any sense nor explain why you can’t simply have one app for WordPress and one app for Jetpack. It sounds more like you’re saying someone made a dumb decision and now you’re stuck trying to rationalize it. I’ll be deleting both.
There was a desire in the WordPress community for the WordPress app to not have so much Jetpack-focused content, so this is why Jetpack features are in their own app now. You can read more about this here:

You can still do everything in the new Jetpack app that you used to do in the old WordPress app – it’s just named differently.
Yes, I’ve read the press release. I’m a Jetpack user who doesn’t want so much WordPress-focused content in the Jetpack application. Again, no one has explained why you can’t have one application for WordPress and another application for Jetpack. You’ve explained that WP users don’t want extra features in the app… Has anyone considered what these words mean? Stop bloating the applications with so much crap. I look forward to the next press release titled “Refocusing the Jetpack App on Core Features”.

When I posted the comment, the Jetpack application on my iPad immediately closed. That’s a crash. I’m not using that app any longer so it’s irrelevant now.
