One page. A blinking cursor. The formatting you need and nothing you don’t. That’s Write: a new, focused writing surface built into WordPress.com. In last year’s Creators survey, “simplify the editor” was the single most-requested improvement from the people already publishing on WordPress.com. So we built it.
Write started as a plugin by Jamie Marsland, who asked a deceptively simple question: what would WordPress look like if it were designed purely for writers? We loved the answer enough that we brought the plugin into WordPress.com and built on it.
The interface is intentionally minimal: a clean page, a persistent top toolbar with the essentials, and formatting that appears when you need it and gets out of the way when you don’t.
Your Write posts are real WordPress posts. They live alongside your other posts, work with your theme, and you can open them in the block editor.
Write is in beta and ready to try (see our support article for setup details). The core writing experience is solid, but we’re still building, and we’d love your input on what to add next.
In this walkthrough, Jamie demonstrates how Write removes distractions from the publishing process, keeps formatting simple, and helps writers focus on drafting and publishing content. The video also covers the project’s origins and where it may evolve next.

It looks really good. Although my main focus is writing about my outdoor stuff, I also add photos for interest – is that going to be easy to do with ‘Write’ or would I need to stick to the current normal editor?
Thanks! Yes, adding photos is easy in Write. Just click the image icon in the formatting toolbar to upload one from your computer. Sounds like a great use case for it. Would love to hear how it feels once you’ve tried it!
Just another quick question… is this for all WordPress bloggers, i.e. including non-paying ones? I’ve had a quick look in the Write editor and can see my blog so I’m assuming I’ll be able to use it. I’ll probably try it for my next upcoming post…
Yes, Write is available to all WordPress.com bloggers, free and paid plans alike. Since you can see your blog in the picker, you’re all set. I’m looking forward to hearing how it works for your next post!
Great – thanks for that!
I’ve just written a brief post with it to test it out. I didn’t do a photos post yet just writing. I found it lets me select which of my categories I want to put it in but couldn’t see a way to add ‘tags’ so went into the block editor afterwards to add them. Otherwise, it seems great so far…
I’m glad it’s working for you so far! Tags are available in Write via a small keyboard shortcut: type a line in your post containing only hashtags (for example, #hiking #photography) and they’ll be assigned as tags when you save. We’ll work on making that easier to find.
just a quick question on your reply – what do you use to separate tags when you type them like that? Do you need to put commas or spaces?
Just spaces like this: #hiking #photography
Commas will break it, and the line needs to contain only hashtags (no other text).
Thanks for that Allison
Hello ,mountaincoward

I think everyone should lead their best life possible and I hope I inspire some people to go out and do just that!

Great idea. Very natural way of working for a writer, not having to worry about “What does that block prompt mean?” Certainly worth trying out.
Thanks! Please let us know what you think if you do have a chance to try it out.
Suggest need to state you use this on your own site. It confused me due to a list of specific sites without explanation.
Thanks for flagging this! Could you share a bit more about where the list of specific sites confused you? Was it the list on wordpress.com/write-editor, or somewhere in the blog post itself? I want to make sure we look at the right thing.
I’m don’t understand how this is different from just opening a normal post and writing… Hum
Fair question. The block editor gives you every block and setting, which is great when you’re building a page but a lot to wade through if you just want to write. Write is designed from scratch for writers, with a curated toolbar and block list and every decision made in service of staying in the writing flow. Everything you need to write, nothing you don’t. The full editor is still there when you need more.
Wasn’t this like the Classic Editor which I liked and then was forced to use the Block editor, which was cumbersome and did not allow writing to flow, as you mentioned. How would we use this? I think you have to be on a WP plan that allows you to choose Write… yes?
Yes, Write brings back a lot of what writers liked about Classic Editor: a clean page, a persistent toolbar, just the essentials. You can try it at wordpress.com/write-editor. It’s available to all WordPress.com bloggers, free and paid plans alike.
Thank you so much for explaining and the link. YES, that’s exactly what most of us want back. Looks like it’s in Beta. How do I access it when I create a post now? Oh, sorry for all the questions, I appreciate your taking the time to help. In fact, I need to visit your website. AirFryerBurrito sounds yummy!
Hi there!
To answer your question, “How do I access it when I create a post now?” –
When you visit wordpress.com/write-editor, you should see a list of your WordPress.com sites. Select a site, and the editor will open, ready for you to start a new post. Currently, that’s the best way to start a new post in the Write editor.
More detailed information is on our support page: https://wordpress.com/support/editors/write-editor/.
If you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
Thanks. How about this. I’m in my WP website. I go to create a Post where it says, NEW. It opens to create a new post. From THERE, how would I access the write-editor?
There’s not a way to access the Write editor from there yet. We’re looking into ways to make Write more visible and easier to access, though!
Ok, good to know!
Is Just very similar to Articles writing is this another new style of writing with inflow words
Thanks for your question! Write is the name of the editor, a tool to write posts on WordPress.com. It’s not a new style of writing, just a simpler interface.
I don’t know how to use this website and I have been trying to make one for my roofing company but I just haven’t been able to able to
Sorry you’re stuck! This step-by-step course is a good place to start: https://wordpress.com/support/courses/create-your-website/. If you’d rather speak with someone directly, our support team is available at https://wordpress.com/support/contact/.
This seems very much like the Classic Editor, which I am still using because it is “intentionally minimal: a clean page, a persistent top toolbar with the essentials”
Great point! Write definitely draws from that ‘just the essentials’ philosophy that you like about the Classic editor. It has a more modern design that feels more at home with the rest of WordPress.com today and seamlessly works with the Block editor. If you ever feel like a change of scenery, give Write a try!
Thank you for your support! I really appreciate it. If you’re looking for something great to read, I encourage you to check out my book as well. Let me know if you’re interested in self-improvement topics—I’d love to hear your thoughts!
How can I access “Write” from my own site’s dashboard? Do I need to go to the special link each time to create or edit a post written with “Write”?
And why not add Image and Quote to the Distraction Free mode toolbar (or alternate toolbar) in the Block Editor? That way writers would have access to their site’s Media Library, which they currently do not have with “Write”.
Thanks for trying it out! For accessing Write, the special link is the simplest entry point for now: https://wordpress.com/write-editor. You can also go directly to your site’s /wp-admin/admin.php?page=write URL. Making Write more visible is on our list.
Distraction-free mode hides the block editor’s interface, while Write is designed from scratch for writers, with a curated toolbar and block list and every decision made in service of staying in the writing flow. We’ll look into adding access to the site’s Media Library.
Awecome! Thanks.
no there is like a button saying post on the left hand side it should be around there
Thanks for the suggestion!
