If I change my website URL, do my followers remain?

    After having had some of my content stolen from a fake url going [my blogname]-wordpress-com.[different domain] in late October I changed my blog settings to private as to prevent further copyright infringement and theft. I would like to make my site viewable again though – though NOT listed in search engines again – and I am wondering if a change of blog-URL could be a safe option for me.

    If I changed my blog URL to another wordpress.com-URL and discard my old URL, what would happen to my followers? Would they all have to follow again or would they all automatically follow the new URL too, since it is the same site with a different URL within wordpress.com?
