Ryu theme: making the featured thumbnail optional

Hi! I’m currently working on a Child Theme for the beautiful Ryu theme. The theme automatically puts the post thumbnail (if there is one) above every post’s headline. I almost always select a post thumbnail for my posts as those are also used if the links get shared on facebook etc. However, I do not always want them to be featured on the blog as well, at least not as big and prominent. Is it possible to somehow implement an on/off-function so that I can only use the featured thumbnail where it makes sense to me?
