1 file could not be uploaded because an error occurred while uploading.

Hello all
I’m having a problem with uploading photos to my wordpress site. I continually get the error “1 file could not be uploaded because an error occurred while uploading.” I have plenty of space available — I’m only using 13% of the 3GB of space I have for uploads and files on the site — and do not understand what the problem is. I also tried refreshing the page and clearing the browser cache, and neither of those things stopped this problem from occurring.
I have found a strange workaround, which seems to be working for now. I thought what if I try uploading a simple photo which is small in size. Well that one uploaded, while 7 or 8 others did not. Then immediately after uploading the simple photo which was small in size, I again tried the larger photo, and it uploaded, whereas just previously it would not upload and gave that error message when I tried to upload it.
What is going on here? How can I stop this error from occurring without having to resort to a strange workaround, which may eventually not work either?

Hi there,
What type of image file are you trying to upload, and what is the file size of the image?
Have you checked if clearing your browser cache or using a different browser makes any difference?

One image that at first gave the error, but I later was able to load using the weird “workaround” of first loading a smaller one, was a photoshopped image I created by merging two photos together. It actually wasn’t that large in size, only 1.23 MB. The smaller one I tried uploading first was 0.98 MB. THese were both jpg images.
A couple other things that would not upload, until again I used the odd workaround, was a couple Adobe Documents. One was 2.75 MB, the other was 3.35 MB. THey were pdf files. The file size should not matter — I have previously uploaded single images in the range of 4.0 to 5.0 MB to my WordPress sites. So I am not sure why this problem occurs.
I just now attempted to upload 2 more images, both screenshots that I made from my computer, both png files and both relatively small files, one 620 KB and the other 529 KB, and both failed to upload, again giving the same error message. So it’s seeming that around 90% or more of my attempts to upload images are failing. The one that actually does upload is rare.
Yes, as I mentioned, clearing the browser cache did not help. I use Google Chrome as a browser, and have always used GOogle Chrome to work on my WordPress site, it should not suddenly be not working. I just tried to upload one of those same small file size screenshots using the Microsoft Edge browser, and the file upload first seemed stuck…it was attempting to upload for over two minutes. Then, it failed to upload, with the same error message.
Normally in the past, every image I upload takes at most 5 seconds to upload, usually less. So, no matter what I do, the large majority of images I try to upload will not go through.

Hi there,
Let’s see if we can get to the bottom of this, I see you have several WordPress.com sites on your account. Are you seeing this with all your sites or just
homelessquandary.wordpress.com?Could you also let us know if you’re using the My Sites editor or the WP-Admin one? Any steps we can take to reproduce the problem would be great.

I was having the problem with two of the sites I was recently working on, The homeless quandary one, also the globalhostingblogs one. Just this afternoon I found that the problem was not occurring so much, when I uploaded several more images, on the globalhostingblogs site. The problem only occurred with one image this afternoon, and I was able to upload about 9 or 10 other images with no problem.
I have been working exclusively on the “My Sites editor”, I believe it is called, the “new and improved” one . Not the one that has the address ——–wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php
I use the improved editor that has no menu on left and has a few menu options on upper right, and which you access by clicking “edit” when you’re on the main site on the published post.

Sorry for any confusion — I have a different username for another of my sites and just responded with that one since I had to log in to the other site to work on that one.

@heartoglad when I’ve seen this issue, it’s sometimes been a problem with the internet connection randomly dropping bits of data. Interestingly, I’ve had more luck in some browsers compared to others because of the way the browser verifies what was uploaded. So if it happens again, you might try Firefox, for example, to see if it makes any difference.
Generally though, this problem will go away on its own, as the ISP quietly fixes whatever was causing the issue.

That’s odd — the internet connection randomly dropping bits of data — but helpful to know the difficulty is likely to eventually go away on its own. I have not yet tried Firefox so I could try that one. At least I’m encouraged that I have more success today than yesterday.

Forward motion! Let us know if we can be of any additional help.
