1-Moving from html to wordpress 2- how can i build or rather experiment with new ideas before moving over site?
-
I have been the webmaster for the above website for a few years.
The previous webmaster passed away. He was both dyslexic and colour blind and the website’s older pages reflect this.
What I want to do is move everything to WordPress BUT also to build this new site, play with it, make sure it works, try out new ideas first, etc. etc.
In other words, all I want to be able to do is make sure that when I flick the switch the new website both transfers over as well as works first time. As I am a newbie on WordPress, I will also need to use this period (which could be a few months), to work my way into the WordPress community mindset, know the tricks of the trade and generally be confident that changes can be made quickly, efficiently and safely and it won’t blow up.
I am actually rather excited that the senior members have agreed I can begin this process. Is there a sort of ‘play area’ where I can quietly and gradually craft the new site page by page?
I totally understand this question is asked a lot but for me this is a BIG step and something I have been waiting to do for too long.
All Hail WordPress!

Hey there,
The previous webmaster passed away.
Sorry for your loss! It sounds like you’ve got some work ahead of you in redoing the site.
What I want to do is move everything to WordPress BUT also to build this new site, play with it, make sure it works, try out new ideas first, etc. etc.

Absolutely. You’re looking for a staging site, and you’d be welcome to start here with us. When you sign up, you’ll be able to choose a base address for the site. Usually that will be a WordPress.com subdomain, though it may end in .blog or .wpcomstaging.com. You can specify what domain you’ll use eventually, but you don’t have to start using it here until you’re ready.
We have several tools you can use to import the content to WordPress, and from there you can tinker around, try on themes, adjust with the Full Site Editor, and so on. If you need to install plugins, you’ll need a paid plan that supports it. You still won’t have to make the new site live until you’re good to go.

I’m excited for you too! You’re welcome to start with a free site. It’s more limited in some ways than a typical WordPress installation (no outside theme and code allowed; that increases our infrastructure costs), but it also has quite a few extras built-in, which reduce the need for outside code. Let us know what features you need & we can help you find them if they’re built-in here.
Note too, you can use your own hosting if you prefer. We like it here because, well, it’s SSL hosting with support and maintenance and what not, but the WordPress software itself is free. But if your existing host allows it, you could potentially stage a site there instead. You’d just use the other forums and support site for guidance: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/ — and we have more on that here:

Just checking in to see how this is going. If you want to share a link to the previous site, we might be able to point you the best article for getting started in setting that up.
