(1) With Custom Design/CSS, can I remove the blog date? Tried "pages", but

  (1) I don’t want dates on entries. We tried to use “pages” instead but lost design elements. Can I fix this with Custom CSS?

  (2) We’re okay with the template font, except that we have reverse type on a “busy” background. We need to make the font larger and bolder in some places. Can I do that with the Custom Design / CSS feature?

  Yes, you should able to hide the date element via CSS, and you’ll have more font controls to tweak things as you like.
