we bought a hosting package with you via 123reg, does this mean we always have to use their portal to make changes?

    Hello hello!

There’s a bit of understandable confusion here! But to summarize, yes — you log into 123 Reg to make changes to your website.

There are two “WordPress” in this context:
    WordPress.com – a managed-hosting service
    WordPress.org Software – the open-source WordPress software

WordPress.com is a web host and “houses” its users’ websites. Similarly, 123 Reg is also a web host that houses its own users’ websites. These website files are uninvolved with each other; WordPress.com’s service has no access to websites hosted with 123 Reg.

The hosting package you bought is one where you can host a website with 123 Reg, and build it with the WordPress.org Software included in the package.

Thus, you indeed must log into 123 Reg to then modify your website, as it is hosted with 123 Reg and not with WordPress.com!

Should you have any WordPress-software inquiries, do note that the forums here (https://wordpress.com/forums) are for websites hosted with WordPress.com.
For sites like yours that use the open-source WordPress software, you can get support at the WordPress.org forums:
    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

    I hope this helps!
