  When you begin creating your WordPress site here:

  https://wordpress.com/start/domains

  There are two options. Choosing a free WordPress.com URL or registering and mapping a custom domain.

  Domain registration and mapping costs $18 with WordPress.com but is indeed optional:

  https://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/#instructions-for-registering-a-new-domain

  For a URL, you can feel free to just use your WordPress.com address which is free for you to use when you sign up:
