$18 domain name option?
-
I read the Domains support page, and it clearly states that there is an $18 option for purchasing a domain. However, I cannot find that option anywhere when I try to add a domain. It automatically bumps me to a premium plan, in which I’m not interested. Where can I find this basic domain purchasing option? Given that the support page shows it as an option, I’m led to believe it’s still around and available.

As it says on the Domains page:
Adding a domain to your site (either registering a new domain or mapping one you already own) requires a WordPress.com plan. Each plan comes with one free domain credit. However, you can setup additional domains on the same site as add-on upgrades
The cost of domain/mapping is $18/year but it can no longer be purchased as an individual upgrade. It is included in all the available Plans (Personal, Premium and Business). It You can see each Plan’s features on your site’s Plans page https://wordpress.com/plans/
Regardless, I’ve tagged this thread for Staff attention and input as that domain page might need to be worded a little differently.

Thanks for the clarification, @JustJennifer. It wasn’t clear to me that a premium plan was required. Having a free account is still listed as a “plan,” so I assumed it was possible to purchase just the domain name as stated in the second bullet point. This is a rather disappointing turn of events, and I strongly agree with you that the support page for Domains will need rewording to avoid being misleading.

Hi @theartofsmyling, thanks, can you send a link to the page where you see that? We’ll take care of it.

@supernovia, the link is https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
It’s the first and second bullet points that are misleading. Am I correct to assume that there definitely is no way to obtain JUST a domain URL for $18 anymore? I would have to pay at least ~$70/year to have my own domain name, whether it’s to map into it or go through WordPress to obtain it?

@theartofsmyling hello again, I’m not supernovia, but

Yes, what you say is correct. There are no individual upgrades available any longer on WordPressdotcom. Custom domain with mapping is only available as part of one of the paid plans, whose features are outlined here https://wordpress.com/plans/

Thanks, @justjennifer :) It’s not the answer for which I was hoping, but better an answer than none!

You’re welcome. :) We just happened to be in the forums around the same time.
Keep in mind that the Personal plan (~$70) includes not only domain/mapping, but also direct support from WPcom Staff by email or live chat (instead of posting in the public forums), as well as keeping advertisements off your site.
Best wishes.

Thanks for that @justjennifer :)
And I’ve updated the second bullet, @theartofsmyling . Thanks for the feedback.
