2 blogs, 2 languages, one username

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I’m new to wordpress.com. I started one blog in French : ateliergenealogique.worspress.com, with my username jamessmith13006. I’ve also started a second blog, themdamnsmithsofderby, which I would like to be solely in the English language. However, my wordpress account is in French, so I’m having difficulty separating the two languages. How can I ensure that potential users of each blog are not foxed by finding instructions in a language they don’t understand ? Do I have to use a different username for the second English-language blog, or even open a separate account ? Many thanks for your help.

  • If you haven’t seen it already, this support document should clear up any language setting confusion:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/language-settings/

Take a look through that page and let me know if you have any further questions. I’ll be happy to help.

Thanks for your reply. However, having looked at the support article, it doesn’t provide me with an answer. The blog language is not a problem ; but the interface language is, since it does not differ from one blog to another. My main blog has a French interface, so when I want to write an article in English on my secondary blog, I still find the French interface. For me, as bilingual administrator, it’s not a problem ; but the readers and authors of my English-language blog will not want to deal with instructions in French in order to participate and contribute.

What is the solution ? Or the options ?

    Many thanks for your help.
    James

  • Right, that is because the interface language is set for each user, not for each blog.

From the page I link to above:

The Interface Language is the language used by your dashboard elements (or user interface). This is specific to each WordPress.com account. It does not differ between blogs.

So, because you have your interface language set to french, you will see french for all of the blogs that you work on. I have mine set to english, so I see english for all of the blogs that I work on. Your readers and contributors should only be seeing their own interface language.

However, if something isn’t working as it should be as far as this is concerned, please let me know.

I’ve now understood the language system, many thanks.
However, I’m having difficulty with the registration of users : is there a tutorial somewhere ?
Also, having put a photo on my ‘www.themdamnsmithsofderby.wordpress.com’ homepage (and exclusively for the homepage, how can I ensure that this photo is not repeated on every other page ?

    Many thanks for your help.

Can you be more specific here? What is it that you are trying to do exactly?

Do you mean a header image? Or do you mean that you would like to have a static (meaning non-blog post) front page?

    1. Registering with wordpress.com is just about OK (although one still has to struggle with instructions in English before one can change the language and rely solely on one’s mother tongue !). The problems seem to begin when one tries to register a potential author. Very often, ‘activation’ doesn’t work : one has to start again, several times. However, I’m prepared to believe that I’m doing something wrong. Here are some of the questions I have :
    – Does one have to become a ‘follower’ before becoming an author ?
    – Does the potential author have to ask the webmaster to become an author, by filling out a contact form ?
    – Why is it that that there is a difficult transition between being registered as a follower (ie. with username recognition by the blog), and being accepted as an author (with full dashboard) ?

I have made Powerpoint presentations in both French and English to help my potential authors (pupils of my genealogy classes) register, which I can send you if give me an email address. But I would be grateful if you could tell me if you have a tutorial which goes through all the stages of registration. As things stand, I ALWAYS have to help my potential authors register, which is time-consuming and not automatically successful.

    2. Yes, I have a static front page, with a photo. But I only want this photo on the front page ; I don’t want it repeated each time I switch to another page. I want to put different photos on each page. Again, I’m sure I’m doing something wrong. What do you think ?

    Many thanks for your help.

I’ve being trying to register an author today, on my English-language blog. The potential author has received 4 invitations, has clicked 4 times on the ‘accept invitation’ button, but he’s still not admitted as an author !

  • – Does one have to become a ‘follower’ before becoming an author ?

No, but they will need a WordPress.com account.

    – Does the potential author have to ask the webmaster to become an author, by filling out a contact form ?

No. The WordPress.com site owner/administrator needs to invite that user. This can be done via their email address or WordPress.com username.

    – Why is it that that there is a difficult transition between being registered as a follower (ie. with username recognition by the blog), and being accepted as an author (with full dashboard) ?

Being a “follower” is not a user role in the same way that author/editor/etc are. They are different systems and are set up differently.

As things stand, I ALWAYS have to help my potential authors register, which is time-consuming and not automatically successful.

If it were my site, I would tell people to register a WordPress.com account and then invite them using their username. This way you know that they are already in the system. If they click on the email link and then have to register an account. They will then need to go back and click the link again to be properly added in whatever role you invited them.

Does this person have an existing WordPress.com account? Or are they just clicking the link? What is their WordPress.com username?

Many thanks for your very full answer.
The person’s username is anchorpoints13, with a registered wordpress.com account.
This morning, I went back to the ‘accept invitation’ email and clicked on the link for the 5th time : this time it worked ! Does this mean that it is best to wait several hours or even a day before clicking the ‘accept invitation’ link ? I know that it can sometimes work without any delay, but perhaps it’s best to tell potential authors to expect the delay ?

    Regarding my second question :
“2. Yes, I have a static front page, with a photo. But I only want this photo on the front page ; I don’t want it repeated each time I switch to another page. I want to put different photos on each page. Again, I’m sure I’m doing something wrong. What do you think ?”

Once again, many thanks for your help. I’m getting there !

To be honest, it really should work right away. But you know how it is with computers (and computer users) sometimes.

Yes, I have a static front page, with a photo. But I only want this photo on the front page ; I don’t want it repeated each time I switch to another page. I want to put different photos on each page.

If you mean the header image, this is not something that you can do on WordPress.com. If you just mean that you want a different image posted on each page within the content of that page, you can do that by just inserting the image at the top of the content when you create it.

Does that make sense? It sort of sounds odd when I read it back to myself.
