2 Different People, The Same IP Address

    Hi,

I have to people that visit me regularly and have both commented. They have the identical IP address! How can this be? Since I know both of them (and they live in two different states), I know it’s not the same person posting under different names from the same computer.

Isn’t every computer issued it’s own IP address so we can tell ‘who’s who’ from our Dashboard?

  • This is very common. Many ISPs and office networks use proxy servers that effectively mean all users of that network appear to have the same IP address.

Think of it this way: if you turn on caller ID, outgoing calls made from a large office phone network will often appear to originate from a single phone number, or a small pool of numbers. Same thing with IP addresses at large ISPs and company networks.

Hey, thanks. I was under the impression that IP addresses were like thumbprints for each computer. That helps :)
