2 Layer Navigation – How?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am rebuilding a site for someone, and they absolutely HAVE to have 2 rows of navigation. I am pretty good at tweaking existing themes to my needs, however am completely unfamiliar with having a second row of navigation (different color/etc). None of the themes I am seeing offer that from startup. Any input is MUCH appreciated!

    Hi there!

Here are some pages that may be helpful for you:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/ – Custom Menus

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/advanced-menu-settings/ – Advanced Menu Settings

I’m not sure if it gives you exactly what you’re looking for, but it might provide you with a good place to start.

Thanks spunkyadventures! Unfortunately those links have gotten me as far as I know how already. My problem is adding the custom menu I’ve created as a secondary navigation bar in the theme I end up choosing :-)

It’s possible that to do more advanced coding, you’d need to use a wordpress.ORG site instead.

If you want to try adjusting the theme through CSS, check out the theme support (https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/):

    Editing Themes

WordPress.com does not offer the option to modify theme files directly, however, you may make changes to a theme by adding CSS if you purchase the WordPress.com Premium or WordPress.com Business plans, both include the Custom Design feature. Custom Design also comes with custom fonts and colors which let you change entire color palettes and font selections for themes with a few clicks, no coding required.

You do not need to know how to code to change fonts or colors using the built in tools, however, you do need to have some CSS knowledge to make changes using the CSS Editor. Our support team can help you get started in the CSS Customization forum. We also provide links to tips, tutorials, and books on our Custom CSS page.

Note that Custom Design does not allow you to edit core PHP or template files.

I’d look into the .ORG solution for full control of the site. I don’t believe the upgrade will allow you to change the coding necessary to do that type of menu.

What is the exact URL starting with http:// of the site you referring to please?

This is wordpress.COM support. We cannot answer any questions posted here accurately until we have the relevant URL and have confirmed hosting.

About 30% of those who post here daily are posting to wrong support forum. strong>We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted sites. Our support docs do not apply to

      (1) local installs of wordpress.ORG software on your own server or
      (2) wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, and we do not provide support for them at wordpress.COM. That support is found at http://wordpress.ORG/support/
      (3) sites linked to wordpress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites wordpress.com account page. That support is found at http://jetpack.com/support/

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, support docs and support forums, run different theme versions of themes with the same names, and many people get confused about the two. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

The wordpress.ORG support forums are at http://wordpress.org/support. The wordpress.ORG login link is here https://login.wordpress.org/ If you do not have an account yet then click Create an account https://login.wordpress.org/register/ and if you have lost an account password click Lost password? https://login.wordpress.org/lostpassword/
