2-part authentication issue

  • Unknown's avatar

I set up 2-step authentication. It’s working but, after the initial login I get a box for the authentication code. Below the space for the authentication code is a check box labeled “remember this for 30 days”.

I’ve checked the box several times but when I log back in I get yet another message on my phone with a new authentication code. To me checking the box means I won’t be asked for another authentication code for 30 days. Am I misinterpreting what “remember this for 30 days” means? Or do I have a problem with my browsers?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Nancy!

Yes, when “Remember this for 30 days” is checked, you shouldn’t be asked for it again anytime soon. Can you please ensure that your browser isn’t set to delete cookies whenever you close it? If that isn’t the issue, please try disabling two-step authentication and re-activating it. Let me know if that helps. Thanks!

My browsers (Firefox & Chromium) are set to accept & keep cookies until they expire.

I disabled and re-enabled two-step authentication under Firefox. I logged into WordPress, entered the code, clicked the 30-day button, logged out of WordPress, and immediately logged back in without closing the browser. I was prompted to enter another verification code.

As a test, I repeated the same procedure under Chromium, with the same result.

so – it’s still not remembering the codes

  • Hi!

I logged into WordPress, entered the code, clicked the 30-day button, logged out of WordPress, and immediately logged back in without closing the browser.

Thanks for providing that info! Logging out of your account erases the cookie information, meaning you’ll have to go through two-step authentication everytime you log back in. If you’re accessing your account on your personal computer at home, I would keep your account logged in to avoid having to repeat the process.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

pardon me, but that seems rather “dumb”.

Gmail remembers my codes when I log out. Why should WordPress recommend I leave my computers on AND logged in at all times???

  • Hi again!

pardon me, but that seems rather “dumb”. Gmail remembers my codes when I log out.

Two-step authentication works a bit differently on WordPress.com. Everytime you log out, you’ll need to be re-aunthenticated when logging back in.

Why should WordPress recommend I leave my computers on AND logged in at all times???

Note that I only recommend staying logged in if you’re accessing your account from a home computer. If it’s a public or work computer then I highly suggest that you always log out before going home.

    Cheers!
