2010 theme drop down menus

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, please advise: I already have the hang of parent/child pages and the way they create a drop down menu in the 2010 theme – see the Galleries page on this blog: http://malvedos.wordpress.com Notice it has seven child pages and the menu is getting a trifle unweildy -ly long! I am planning on creating another page (call it Douro) with lots of children, potentially 20 and will grow. So question is: in the 2010 theme is there a way to turn off that “child pages get magically listed in a drop down menu” function, for just the proposed Douro parent page? I’ve searched forum and support, it all seems focussed on the opposite desire – trying to create these menus where the theme doesn’t auto-provide like 2010 does. Suggestions? Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

May I be so bold as to ask why you are creating static pages rather than posts please?

You can create a custom menu and then only include the pages that you want. Do not though that if you decided to show only parent pages, there will be no links to the child pages unless you physically, manually, add those links to the body of the parent page.

Typo correction: That should be “Do Note though…”

<p>I think I have the opposite issue… I had a separate page that was listed in the 2010 theme top level URL’s which I then changed to be a child of a different top level page & now it doesn’t show up as a drop-down in that top level parent URL. The revised parent/child categorization does show properly in the Pages Widget.</p>
<p>In case it matters, I made the changes via WordPress for Blackberry version 1.4.4</p>

You need to log into the blog on a real computer and check things. Also if you are using a custom menu, child pages are not automatically added or moved around in the navigation. You have to do that manually from the custom menu page in the dashboard.

Sorry, deeply distracted for a day there. Hello TT & richard! This is the scoop: We have a monthly viticultural report, used to be on another site, we want to bring it in here (lots of reasons, I won’t bore you with, but it is sensible and desirable). It is something which many people follow independently of the blog and which attracts a much more specialist geeky audience and would potentially repel some of the audience for mainstream blog – that’s why we want to give it its own page; also the reports are substantial: 1000 to 2000 words each (hence summary/link to full).

My first thought was, set up a second blog page in this site, but from all I’ve read in support and forums, that’s not on option (wait – am I wrong??? is it an option now? If so, solves everything!). Hence, as a workaround, I thought of the concept of parent page (a page dedicated to these reports) with the children (monthly reports, currently back roughly two years’s worth, and will be ongoing in future), structured as I had done with the Galleries.

Richard – I was reading the custom menu documentation, and looked at the functionality and even began to tinker in my test bed site, but got confused (probably just too late at night). Am I right to think if I start to create a custom menu, that blows away the tab structure now existing? So, if I go custom route, I need to-recreate all of that again, it’s all or nothing? Manually doing the child links in the page doesn’t faze me, I can handle it (wild eyed optimist), it was just what happens to existing structure vs if I set up a custom menu that dizzied me.

Huge thanks to both of you for the interest and advice.

Very interesting… I accessed the WordPress.com site via PC instead of BB & checked the Custom Menu layout options. I found the same thing was happening re my child pages that I manually assigned via the drag/drop to right of parent page.

On a hunch… I checked my site on another system that has IE7 installed (my present workstation is IE6) – lo & behold, the custom menu works as I had manually configured it. I switched it back to the default menu and rechecked, the pages are listed in menus as submitted by WordPress for BB app once again display correctly on the IE7 browser.

In conclusion, problems with Drop-down menus working as described may be related to the version of browser being used.

For Sinthea, you thought it out correctly. If you enable your Custom menu then you do need to recreate your top level Menu entries & if you leave out the child pages then they won’t be displayed. This is what I did to mask out the additional child pages that I had created initially but have yet to fill with content (ie. I didn’t realize I should have kept them as drafts or private).

Ralphf, thank you for confirming that – hopefully I will get enough sleep to tackle this without danger (!!) – give me a day or two to try this and make sure it’s working and I get it, before I close this thread. Will report back my luck. Thank you all.

In case any one else was wondering about this, last night I checked how the drop down menus operate in my Blackberry 9700 browser & can confirm that the alternate text you enter in Custom Menu will show up but the child page menu entries do not.

rrrggg started working on this tonight and realised pages don’t do categories or tags, which I do want to use for this content. So my revised plan is to create the viticultural reports as blog entries (TT you were right…!), back date them as needed, use the more tag so the full report content on front page of blog doesn’t scare off the general reader (hopefully), and then use the custom menu function to create my dedicated page, and that will be a category archive page. Will leave this thread open a little longer, in case I find more snags. If anyone spots any dangers in this approach, let me know!! thanks
