2012 theme question

  • Unknown's avatar

Nobody answered me in the theme forum so maybe I’ll try here:

I finally used enough CSS to get the 2012 theme to look like I want in some areas with some help from the CSS team. One further question:

I’m looking to keep a small three sentence sticky post with one left-justified thumbnail on the home page; if I use the “stick it on the front page” option on (which is only available in the advanced features of the new improved post screen), that is all that comes up when if you simply access my page from scratch.

I’m hoping to have a “home page” that will show about half the screen with the sticky post and my most recent posts right under it (at least on tablets and laptops-understanding phones may be too small for that)

Is it possible to create a sticky post that only appears as the first post on a home page and I’ll ensure it’s small enough so as not to take up the entire page?

If this question is better in the support forum, please let me know and I will repost

    Thanks

    Try this instead.

Make sure you have your site set to show posts on your front page (which seems to be the setting you have now).

Then from your “posts” page in the dashboard, find the post you want to be at the top, hover over the title until the menu options show up and click “quick edit.” that should open up a menu where you will see a check box titled “make this post sticky.” If you click that your site should be set up the way you want it. Note: These instructions assume you are making the change from your dashboard, not the new editor.

Let me know if you run into any problems.

P.S. This is just an explanation of what was happening before, it’s not required reading for the fix, just sharing it in case you are curious.

The 2012 theme gives you two options to show a sticky post on your front page. The “stick to front page” option you describe is the way to feature a post on a “static front page” That’s why the page setup looks different than what you were hoping for.

By just making the post sticky, but not switching to a static front page, you are able to get the post to stay at the top, without activating the alternate look for your home page.

    Hi Liz
By chance, can you help at all with another question that nobody has responded to: I’m not really understanding the comments, reply, pings and approval process: Here was the post:
    ===========================================
I’m not sure if I’m missing something: My blog is new so excuse the dumb question.

Some of my posts say “1 reply” at the top right under the title and appear as a link; however, when you click, there is no reply. I believe I’ve only received pings, not replies which I keep approving even though I’m not really sure what they mean even after reading the forum topic on the subject

I want comments to appear on the bottom. If I’m understanding, they need to be approved before appearing? If I’ve received only pings and not comments why do they come up as “1 reply” on the post?

    Thanks

    oops sorry for dupe post

Pings, or trackbacks are considered replies along with comments which is why they are being included in your count. If you’d rather not see them, this article will show you how to turn them off. http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

As for what a “ping” (or pingback, or trackback) is. It’s an automatically generated notification that someone has linked to the post. If you click on the links in the posts you’ll see where your post was referenced elsewhere on the web. If you are linking to your own posts in your blog (which is a good thing to do) the pingbacks might be links to your own posts.

Does that help clear up the term a bit?

Does that help clear up the term a bit?

    Hi Liz
Thanks for the explanation. I read the link and I I guess nobody has commented yet. Since all 3 boxes are checked in my “default article settings”, I guess they have been my own pings based on my references to my own posts. I’m not sure that makes sense to me.

Sometimes the ping shows that I have a comment(s) on my dashboard; I notice those are waiting approval but not all the time. Are some of them my own pings and others not? Why should I approve pingbacks? What happens if I don’t ? Do I need to approve my own ping?

All I really want is to ensure that comments show on the bottom of the posts if someone makes an actual comment.

Thanks again; sorry for being confused.

I notice those are waiting approval but not all the time. Are some of them my own pings and others not?

I did a quick scroll through your posts and the pingbacks I saw were all to other posts on your site, so I’m guessing they are all you at the moment. As for why you sometimes have to approve them and other times not, I’m not totally sure.

Why should I approve pingbacks? What happens if I don’t ? Do I need to approve my own ping?

If you want the pingback to appear on the post you should approve it, if you don’t want it to appear you should leave it unapproved or trash it. Your decision doesn’t effect anything except whether the pingback shows up in your comment section.

All I really want is to ensure that comments show on the bottom of the posts if someone makes an actual comment.

I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Your posts are very interesting, and I see you are getting likes. You’ll have your first comment in no time. It sometimes helps to ask specific questions to your readers at the end of the post as a way to invite them into the conversation, so you might try that to encourage your first comment.

This article will also help you go through and check your comment/discussion settings, but my guess is they are all fine.

    Hope that helps!

    @lizthefair

    Hi Liz
Can you help me with one more thing? My wife wants to share my posts on her Facebook page. Although my settings in the “share” have the FB icon enabled, on the site it’s a “like”, not a “share”. When she clicks the icon, it doesn’t appear anywhere on her FB page. I believe it should say something like “Diane liked a post from Rob…etc etc” and the post should appear for her friends to see?

Can you please look at my settings and see if I’m doing something wrong? FB is the only social media we use regularly so it’s important to be able to share my posts with my wife’s friends. I’ll repost as a new topic also.

    Thanks
