    I have 2 things I would like to customize: copyrighted footer and header texts.
    I haven’t edited css for a long time and I am a bit dusty lol.
    Help please?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi seippiha,

    Are you looking to change the color of those texts?

    For the copyright footer something like this in your Custom CSS would do the trick.

    #footer-sidebar {
        color: <your color>;
    }

    What do you mean by the header texts? Do you mean the blog title and site description? If so than this should do it.

    .site-descrition {
    color: <yourcolor>;
    }

    .site-title {
    color: <yourcolor>;
    }

    If you mean the titles of the individual posts then this should do it.

    .entry-title {
    color: <yourcolor>;
    }

    You’ll just need to put in the color value you are looking for in each of those places marked <yourcolor>.

    If you are looking for changing something else, just let me know.

    Hi and thank you for the help!

    I should have been more detailed haha.

    Footer:
    I want to add copyright texts (as I have done with a widget in the footer area), but I want it BEFORE the theme label and NOT in the widget. Note, I do NOT want to remove the theme texts, but just add mine in that area as well.

    Header:
    I would like to increase the size as well as insert a custom font.

    I have purchased the premium package, yet I am finding I can’t do much at all. Customization is VERY limited for $99.

  • Unknown's avatar

    :(
    None of those worked for me.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Sorry I misunderstood.
    I know we are not allowed to remove the footer text there, as you said, I’m not sure what the policy is on adding to it. I’ll tag this for a staff member to clarify.

    If it’s OK here is how I would do it.

    .site-info::before {
      display: block;
      content: '0a9 Seippiha 2014. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. A Founded by Cagney Burbank';
      white-space: pre;
    }

    Also to modify the font for headings you should be able to do it in the customizer using the font section. See this link for more info.

    The forums stripped out a bit of the code. Here is a screenshot for how it should look.

    Footer addition

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there!

    You’re totally allowed to add to the footer, you just can’t remove it or make it unreadable. :)

    As for the code, the encoded copyright character does get stripped here in the forums. Its unfortunate. However, if you copy and paste the symbol itself that will also work: ©.

    It looks like sandymcfadden has covered your other questions.

    I have purchased the premium package, yet I am finding I can’t do much at all. Customization is VERY limited for $99.

    I’d love to know more about what you’d like to be able to change that you’re finding you can’t. I can either help you figure out how to do it, or I can take it back to the team to discuss adding.

    Let me know if I can help with anything else!

    Thanks Shawna! I thought it was fine, but didn’t want to say so without being sure.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thank you both greatly!
    It looks beautiful!

    As far as the premium upgrade I think it should come with some of the things I have sought help for here. If a person is paying $99 we assume this comes with more customization. Is a $18 domain and changing colors and maybe 5 fonts to change worth $99? No. I find the theme info (most often times) to be scarce. It leads to trying multiple themes then when you finally see one you like and think “Oh I can customize it like the preview” BAM! No, can’t do that, go host on your own for those benefits, but at that time you’ve paid for the theme. It causes one to think if this is just a marketing scheme, maybe?
    Having a footer is very basic, I understand, but for those who don’t do websites for a living, they will be lost thinking “I can never have a professional website here”.
    I, like many here, seek the forums or the live chat because I have been here since 2010, but preventing refunds of unhappy customers would further WP success. Don’t you agree ? Basically keep people here instead of forwarding them to a “self-hosted” site. I know many would like more freedom, but if these packages had the same customization/benefits there wouldn’t be a need to.

    I absolutely LOVE how fast and educated you all are. It’s so nice to reach out for help and receive it in a timely manner, so professional and comforting :)
    I have been here for four years and counting because of that!

    Hi again,

    I can understand what you’re saying but I’ll give my bit of understanding on why you can’t edit some things when it comes to the themes and another tip about how to change more fonts if you like.

    First I’ve built a fair number of sites using self hosted WordPress and it is great for lots of things especially if you need more functionality.

    With WordPress.com we can’t edit the themes because the same theme files are used for all customers. So if we could make a change it would effect everyone else using that theme. To allow everyone to have their own copy of the theme I would imagine would make managing the themes a nightmare. Trying to update themes for users after they’ve customized it, without breaking things, would be nearly impossible. That is part of the beauty of WordPress.com. You don’t need to worry about any of that.

    I spent last night going around and running updates on a bunch of the WordPress.org sites I manage. It took quite a while to do them all. Updating the main software as well as plugins and themes. Here I don’t need to worry about it. I always have the most up to date and secure version. If we could customize the themes that wouldn’t work.

    With the Custom CSS you have access to make a lot of changes to the look of the site. It’s certainly trickier to add content to places where there isn’t any now, but like we did with the footer it can be done. You also have the ability to change to many fonts using the custom css.

    A fairly good site with lots of web safe font stacks is http://cssfontstack.com/ You can use these in your Custom CSS and specify all kinds of different parts of your site to have many different fonts if you wanted to.

    A lot of this is my own opinion but I think it’s pretty accurate. Shawna might be able to clarify if I’m off.

    Also like you said, there is usually always someone here in the forums, volunteer or staff willing to help you out to make the site the way you like.

  • Unknown's avatar

    And I totally appreciate that!

    Thank you ALL :) (I can’t say it enough haha)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Oops, wait I’m back.

    This ” .site-info::before { display: block; content: ‘ © Seippiha 2010-2014. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Founded by Cagney Burbank. ” Doesn’t work, but it is how I want it to look.

    How would I post a screen grab here?

  • Unknown's avatar

    This should explain how to post a screenshot http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

    What isn’t working?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @seippiha–http://snag.gy/ is a useful tool that a lot of people use in the forums to post screen shots.

    Also, to add my $.02 to Sandy’s great answer about the trade-offs between WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG I like to think of the forum support for CSS to be a big part of what you get with the CSS upgrade. Without CSS knowledge you may only be able to change some of the colors and fonts, but you also get free access to people who are more than happy to provide you with the code you need. While WordPress.ORG installs don’t require you to pay to access the CSS, or underlaying themes/code Without CSS knowledge, you are also responsible for making all of your own code changes or paying someone to do it for you.

    One last thing–Your original assumption about the themes was correct. You should be able to make your site work the same as the demos without messing with the CSS. It’s not always super obvious where all the dials and knobs are for each theme though, so if you run into problems like that in the future, be sure to bring them up in the support or the theme forum. Someone will be happy to help you.

  • Unknown's avatar

    But as you see it doesn’t show up after hitting save.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Two things I notice. I think you have a space in front of the copyright symbol. Try removing that. Also you need to close off the content property with a single quote and curly bracket. Look at my code in the screenshot again. You can leave out the A and the whitespace part though if you want it all on one line.

    Hope that does it.

    Hi seippiha!

    Thanks so much for your response. It looks like sandymcfadden has your code questions covered, so I wanted to respond further to your follow up about the Premium package.

    I find the theme info (most often times) to be scarce. It leads to trying multiple themes then when you finally see one you like and think “Oh I can customize it like the preview” BAM! No, can’t do that

    I’d love to add any details you think are missing to our theme info pages. It’s true that a lot of our themes have fairly simple information pages. However, many of them also have an additional ‘Support’ link in the upper right that will lead you to more detailed steps to set up the theme exactly like the demo site. For example, you can see that page here for the Espresso theme:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/espresso/support/

    We don’t use any upgrade-only features on our demo sites for exactly this reason. We want you to be able to set your site up exactly like the demo. Definitely let us know if there’s a theme you’re having trouble setting up like the demo, and we can help you out.

    Having a footer is very basic, I understand, but for those who don’t do websites for a living, they will be lost thinking “I can never have a professional website here”.

    I think lizthefair’s comment rings truest here for me. One of the benefits of using WordPress.com is the access to the forums and the staff members who can help out with this type of thing. We also have almost a dozen different pages that will walk people through learning how to edit their CSS code themselves.

    preventing refunds of unhappy customers would further WP success. Don’t you agree ? Basically keep people here instead of forwarding them to a “self-hosted” site.

    Of course preventing refunds would probably raise our profits and we definitely want to keep people here at WordPress.com. But only if it’s really the best fit for them.

    Many of the restrictions here on WordPress.com regarding installing plugins or themes, and using advertising are in place because this is a shared platform, as sandymcfadden explain.

    But we also understand that this doesn’t work for all people. So we want to make the transition easy, we’d rather not hold your content or your money hostage because your needs have changed or you didn’t fully understand our restrictions.

    Basically we want you to have the best experience building and using your website as possible. And part of that is understanding that WordPress.com isn’t going to be the best option for every single person with a website. Although, our goal is to be the best option for a lot of them, and then maybe eventually all of them. :)

    Can I send you all a cyber hug? :-D
    Thank you for all your help and than you for allowing me to voice my opinion! You’ve made very valid points as well and they are all noted.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Cyber hugs are always accepted! :D

    We’re always working on making our upgrades and packages better, and I’ll make sure your concerns are voiced the next time we revisit the Premium plan. :)

    Let us know if you need anything else!
