2014 Theme Slider

I’m looking for a theme with a featured post slider. On WP’s site, I noticed that the 2014 theme has a slider. However, when I view the demo, the slider is dormant, meaning it doesn’t automatically rotate through the featured posts. It only does this manually. Does anyone know if this is something that can be set to be automatic?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello there,

It’s not something that can be switched on automatically, more so how this operates is a feature of the theme.

These themes can be searched for here: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/featured-content-with-pages/

Can you tell us more about the site? Perhaps we can offer some more insights.

This is what I have now on https://anime.astronerdboy.com/. As you see, there’s an automated slider for featured posts.

The only reason for me to migrate off this theme is that the company I bought it from YEARS ago has basically gone dead since 2019. As such, I figure it is only a matter of time before WordPress breaks it completely. (Indeed, had I done the last update from 2019 for the theme, WP would have already broken it.)

  • Hi there,

I see your site is not hosted with us on WordPress.com, but using the open source WordPress.org software at another hosting provider, so this forum isn’t really the best place for help with this.

But as my colleague explained above, the featured posts slider in Twenty Fourteen does not advance automatically, nor does the post slider in most of the themes we offer here on WordPress.com.

If you’re looking for a new theme, you can try the theme directory on WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/themes/, but I had a look at the filters available there, and there isn’t one for themes that have a post slider, so there’s no way to narrow down the 4000+ options available in that regard.

The other option is to use a plugin to add a slider instead. That way you don’t need to worry about getting a theme with this feature. You can find the post slider plugins available on WordPress.org here:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/post+slider/

For more help with this, the community over on WordPress.org will be better able to give you advice, so consider asking at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

For questions about a specific theme or plugin on that end, you can post in the subforum for the theme/plugin directly.

And yet this is where bloody WordPress sent me, which is how I found you. If one wants WP-supported themes, WordPress.com seems to be the folks that support them. 🙁 Oh well. Thanks anyway.

  • We don’t make either your current theme, nor the Twenty Fourteen theme you asked about above, so neither of those should be linking to WordPress.com from the theme showcase in your dashboard. Where did you find a link that sent you here?

If one wants WP-supported themes, WordPress.com seems to be the folks that support them.

The only “WP-supported” themes are the default Twenty-something themes that are installed by default when you download and install a new copy of the WordPress software from WordPress.org, as those are the only themes created by the core WordPress development team themselves. Those themes each have their own subforum over on WordPress.org. (Here on WordPress.com we can only help with the WordPress.com-hosted versions of the default themes, not with the open source version you’d be using on your site.)

All other themes are created by private companies and independent developers, who are also responsible to provide support for those themes.

Here on WordPress.com, we only provide support for the themes we make, and that are listed at https://wordpress.com/themes/ (which you can access via your site’s Jetpack connection to us), or that are listed in the WordPress.org theme showcase with “Automattic” as the author (https://wordpress.org/themes/author/automattic/). But none of the themes we created have this slider feature you’re looking for.

We don’t provide support for any other WordPress themes – we can’t provide support for something we didn’t make, as we have no control over how it works in that case.

I hope this clarifies things a bit for you :)
