2014 theme top menu jumps up early above the header

Hey guys! This is my first post in the forum, although I have been reading other posts for years to find very helpful staff feedback.

So, my issue – and I have noticed this both on my blog (http://andrewgold.me) and other Twenty Fourteen blogs with a header – is that the top menu jumps up above the header as soon as you begin scrolling. When, I think it should stay in place until you reach the scroll to the bottom of the header, and then start to move down the page.

I hope I’m explaining myself well – the problem is that it leaves an unattractive white gap between the header and the content beneath it.

The strange thing is that on certain occasions – when I have begun scrolling, the page has worked how it should do. But 99% of the time, the dreaded white gap appears!

The jumping effect you refer to only occurs on screen of sufficient size, or on smaller screens with certain zoom settings.

The menu transitions smoothly to the top position as you scroll past the bottom of the header area on my 12″ X 9″ monitor screen (1024 x 768 pixels). I have to zoom out (FF 38.0.5) at least once to obtain the white space and the jump while scrolling. If I instead zoom in three clicks, there is a delay in the menu transition, rather than the smooth transition seen without zooming, and at the fourth zoom in the horizontal menu transforms to a three-bar menu.

The above results indicate that the effect you describe will only occur, given default zoom settings, on screens larger than 12″ wide by 9″ high. However, the results also indicate that the responsiveness of the theme to variations in screen size and zoom settings is glitchy.
