2nd WP account upgrade
-
Hello,
Have a question regarding an account I’d like to upgrade.
I do have a Premium : Sous nos Couettes & a basic account so far : Tails from Paris (its US sister).I’m about to upgrade the US blog but I wonder if I should create a complete new account for it or do it from my existing one.
I’m afraid to lose the English language benefits if I monitor the two blogs from a single account.
What do you think ?
Best, Franck

Hi there, could you let me know what specific English language benefits you’re hoping to keep after upgrading the US site?
I’m not sure I follow things so knowing a bit more about what you’re hoping to avoid have happen would help me give you the best advice. Thanks!

What I meant by “benefits” is, for instance, not being able to :
– use the Reader search tool in English and therefore won’t find the right English blogs,
– switch from one avatar to another (“Tails from Paris” or “Sous nos Couettes”),
– like or comment someone’s post choosing one avatar or the other …If you can help, feel free.

Hi Franck,
– use the Reader search tool in English and therefore won’t find the right English blogs,
The Reader Topics search is based on the language you have set in your accounts settings here:
https://en.wordpress.com/?ssl=forced#!/settings/account/
For example, if your Interface Language on that settings page is set to English and you search for blog posts about music, you will get to this page: http://en.wordpress.com/#!/read/topic/music/
However, you can always view posts about topics in other languages. Just change the ‘en’ in http://en.wordpress.com/#!/read/topic/music/ to the abbreviation of your language. For example: a French (fr) topic page about music would become http://fr.wordpress.com/#!/read/topic/music/.
Each of your blogs’ posts will appear in the topics page for the language set under Settings > General for that blog.
switch from one avatar to another (“Tails from Paris” or “Sous nos Couettes”)
You can set different blavatars (blog avatars) for your blogs under Settings > General in each blog’s dashboard. You can find out more about how to do this here: Blavatars
like or comment someone’s post choosing one avatar or the other
You can create different Gravatars for posting comments by adding secondary email addresses to your account at Gravatar.com. To add an email address, sign in at Gravatar.com and go to this link:
https://en.gravatar.com/emails/new
You can then add images and set a different Gravatar for each email address. Your Gravatar is linked to your email address, so you can select the email address linked to the Gravatar you want to use when leaving comments.
However, your primary email address and its Gravatar will be used for liking someone’s post. If you want to create completely separate identities linked to each blog (with completely separate Gravatar profiles for likes), you may want to create a separate account and transfer your blog to that account.
In that case, you can log out of your current WordPress.com account and sign up for just a username at this link: https://signup.wordpress.com/signup/?user=1
You can then transfer ownership of your second blog to that username by following the instructions here: Transferring Your Blog to Another User or Account
If you have any questions about this, please let me know!

Hi Rachel,
I have a question for you if I may following an issue with Publicize.
As you know, I run two blogs (one in English & the other one in French).Lately, in order to connect those two blogs & raise audience on the new one, I have posted small-sized images at the end of each post, routing readers to the other language blog.
You can check that here in English :
http://tailsfromparis.wordpress.com/2013/07/20/mammary-protection/And here in French :
http://sousnoscouettes.com/2013/07/24/et-dieu-crea-la-femme/The problem I’ve encountered is thatPublicize picks up the wrong image when publishing in FB, Twitter, LinkedIn & Tumblr as you can check on Tumblr with the last automated post for instance :
http://sousnoscouettes.tumblr.com/Publicize picks up the small-sized image instead of the main one.
Can you help ?
Thank you.

Hi Franck,
You can see the order in which images are selected for Publicize here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/#images-in-publicize
One way to keep your small images at the end of the post from being selected by Publicize is to use an image that is smaller than 200×200 pixels. You can resize the image to make sure it is small enough before inserting it into the post — that way it won’t be selected.
If you have any questions about that, please let me know!
-
Thanks Rachel.
I went thru the article. And it says that Publicize selects images that are at least 200 x 200 pixels in the following order:
Featured image
An image attached to the post and inserted
Any other image in the post (not attached but perhaps linked)
GravatarBut what I do not get is, in my posts, the “Featured Image” (e.g. the main pic) is not the one picked, and Publicize picks the image with the “miniature” size, e.g. 135 x 150.

Hi Franck,
Featured images are actually different from images that you insert into your blog posts. The Balloons theme doesn’t support featured images, but if you are interested you can read more about them here: Featured Images
The other image inserted in your post is small, but the original size of the image itself is 280×300 pixels, which is large enough for it to be selected by Publicize. If you resize that image before inserting it into the post (either on your computer or by editing the image after uploading it) so it is smaller than 200×200 pixels, it won’t be selected by Publicize.
Here is more information about editing images in your media library: Image Editing

Really I don’t get it Rachel because, once inserted in the post, each bottom-right-post image is 140 x 150; e.g. way less than 200 x 200 and therefore should not be picked by Publicize … unless I miss something …
You can check this with that one among others :
http://sousnoscouettes.com/2013/07/26/noyure/Or directly in my image gallery.
Unless Publicize picks them up before insertion (which is barely unlikely) and then, yes, image are on average 3.000 x 3.200.
What do you think ?
-
Hi Franck,
I see what you mean about the original image size being much larger. However, when you insert the image into the blog post, the image size you select under “Attachment Display Settings” is the size that matters to Publicize. In this case, that size is 280×300 pixels. Even if you resize the image after that so it looks small in the blog post, the larger size will be detected.
You can check this by right-clicking on the image in the post and opening it in its own browser window. You will see the medium-size version of the image at this link:
One way to avoid this is to insert the image as a thumbnail — this will set the size at 140×150 pixels so it is not picked up by Publicize.

Hi Rachel !
New question if I may.
With the theme that I use, can the comments for each post be displayed without having to download the page (e.g. clicking on the post title) ?
Thank you
Franck -
Hi Franck,
Where the comments are displayed (e.g. on the post page versus your blog’s home page) depends on the theme templates, which can’t be changed for themes here at WordPress.com. Visitors to your site will need to click the “Leave a comment” link to get to your post’s comments.
However, there are a number of other settings you can control for your blog’s comments, which you can read more about here:

Hello Rachel,
I made up my mind and want to create a separate account and transfer my 2nd blog (Tails from Paris) to that account.
THe pb I encounter is as follow : when signing up for a new account, I can’t because the username “tailsfromparis” already exists. Is it mine (that I previously created or does someone at WP owns it too ?)
Thanks.
Franck -
Hi Franck,
The username “tailsfromparis” is actually reserved for you, since you have the matching blog address. However, it hasn’t been created yet — I’d be happy to set it up for you.
Can you give me an email address that you’d like to use with this account? (It needs to be an email address that is not already linked to an existing WordPress.com account.)
Email addresses are redacted from the support forums so it won’t be made public (and you’ll see a message like “email redacted” in your reply), but don’t worry, staff can still see the email address. I can use that to create the account for you.
Please let me know if you have any questions about that!

Hi Franck,
Yes, you can always change your account email address from your account’s settings page. However, each WordPress.com account must use a unique email address. You can read more about that here: Email Address
