3 or 4 footer widget areas

I had used all 4 possible areas in the footer widget area and I found them a bit too narrow. I changed my widget layout using only areas 1 to 3… nothing in 4 and hoped that the horizontal space would be equally shared. It seems this is not the case. The space for widget area is still there, even there is nothing in it.
Is there a way to change this? … so that there is more horizontal space for the 3 used areas?

I think the only way you might be able to do this is with the Custom CSS upgrade included in the Premium or Business Plans.
However, I would like to suggest that you consider switching to a newer theme. As time goes on, retired themes like Mystique are no longer updated and do not support WordPressdotcom’s newer features.

Thanks for your reply… I noticed you added two tags… I am learning :-)
That’s a bit disappointing… I am used to Mystique and what I like about it is that the text of the page uses the whole width of the window. I had to swap for some other reason already away from Mystique and it seems that the in newer themes the text width is much narrower.
I did switch from Mystique to 2011 which has some odd behaviours, which I only discovered when working with it.

:) Makes it easier to find related threads. Also searching the forums or Support site for a keyword works well.
It looks like your current site is page-based and many themes have a full width page template, so you might want to start by looking at those https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/full-width-template If you only want to look at free themes, you can click on the filter at the right
You can also post in the Themes forum to request suggestions.

Could you help me a bit more? The link you gave me showed themes which are full width of the screen but the text width is only half of that width. I am looking for one where the text width is almost as wide as the window…
Gateway is almost there… but there is space kept free for the sidebar even it is not used.
Mystique had 3 choices in page layout… with or without sidebars, left or right. I have not seen this with any other theme
