301 redirects for free WordPress.com
-
Hi,
I’ve moved by website from a .wordpress.com site to a custom domain. As it’s WordPress.com I can’t install plugins to handle the 301 redirects for me, and the wp_redirect command doesn’t seem to work in the Gutenburg block editor, unless I’m missing what code tags to wrap things in.
What do I need to do to get wp_redirect to work for this type of site? I don’t want to have to pay to upgrade to a WordPress.org site simply to be able to install a redirect plugin.

Just to clarify, you have moved your website off of WordPress.com to another webhost and would like to point visitors to your old WordPress.com site to the new site?
If so, the site redirect upgrade will do that for you: https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/
If I’ve somehow misunderstood what you are aiming to do, please let us know and we’ll be happy to help.

Yes, that’s correct.
However, the format of the other site doesn’t give the post date, so I’m not sure that I really want to pay for a solution that only might work.
Is there a way to use the wp_redirect shortcode without the the automation, that I can edit and debug manually? I don’t want to pay if all it’ll do is fall over because of the site structure.

The site-redirect upgrade is the only option we offer on WordPress.com.
The
wp_redirect()function cannot be used on WordPress.com, as we don’t allow modification of WordPress core files for sites hosted on our servers, and using any plugin that makes use of that function requires our Business Plan. -
OK. In which case, I’ll just have to make the gamble.
Do the redirects all have to have date formats in? That’s my main concern here. I’ve got the formats of
example.com/sample-pageandexample.com/podcast/sample-podcastas my primary routing. Is that going to be picked up by a programmatic 301 that looks forexample.com/2014/10/21/sample-post/? -
I can’t guarantee that, unfortunately. In some cases our site redirect might still work with different permalink structures like that, but it also might not.
But even if it doesn’t, it will still take people to your new site, albeit not the exact post.
