    That is correct.

    When your domain is transferred, we have to pay the registry that controls it to do that, so domain transfers represent an actual hard cost to us. As part of the process your domain is also renewed for another year, which also costs us money.

    Additionally, while we provide our basic hosting service entirely for free, we do charge for certain additional services and features we provide on WordPress.com, one of which is the ability to use your own domain with a site hosted on our servers. So it doesn’t matter whether you buy the domain from us, transfer it to us, or simply connect it here, using your own domain requires that your site is on a paid plan.
