3rd Party Plugins
-
For business plan users, are the available 3rd party plugins only ones from the .org repository or are they able to upload any plugin?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
At the moment it is only possible to install plug-ins from Plugin Directory.
You can access and add third-party plug-ins built by the WordPress community.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/adding-plugins/Unfortunately it is not possible to upload files of a custom plug-in, and not all the plugins that would otherwise be available with WordPress.ORG install are available with WordPress.COM. The main reason for this is to protect Business plan users from potential issues caused by conflicting plug-ins.
The vast majority of plugins will work with WordPress.com Business.
However, for best performance, WordPress.com recommends avoiding plugins that duplicate built-in functionality.
Additionally, plugins in these categories are incompatible with WordPress.com:
Caching and optimization plugins
Site security plugins
Backup plugins
Membership plugins (Support coming soon)You can learn more about differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
You can always get a business plan and in case you can’t achieve the desired result – ask for a refund.

Interestingly, chat just said otherwise.

Is there a way to upload plugins that are not on the wordpress.org repository to wordpress.com business plan accounts?WP.comMon, Oct 9, 3:52 PM
Yep!WP.comMon, Oct 9, 3:52 PM
You have to install a plugin from the repository first, but once you do, a little ‘upload’ button appears and you can install custom plugins.mrtorbertMon, Oct 9, 3:53 PM
ok thank youWP.comMon, Oct 9, 3:53 PM
Gotcha; if you download them from an outside source, they can be uploaded from your computer. You’re very welcome! -
Oh I am really sorry for misguiding you. Anyway I am happy that it will be possible for you to install a plug-in of your choice!

One of you is wrong.
This is pretty major functionality; my recommendation is to find out for certain from someone who knows. -
I am a volunteer so I have a strong feeling that I am the one who is wrong here. Employee you chatted with knows better, and as I mentioned before you can always get a refund if you will not be able to achieve the desired result. Once again, sorry for causing this doubt.

In case you still have doubts – I’ve found a sentence that confirms it is possible to upload plug-ins:
“WordPress.com does not curate plugins, and in fact site owners can upload their own custom-written plugin or theme.”

Hi there,
As you were told in the chat, the first plugin you install has to be listed in the WordPress.org repository. Once you’ve done that the option to upload additional plugins will appear.
This feature is still experimental, which is why the documentation does not yet reflect this change. Also be aware that we have no way to check plugins from outside the .org repo for potential incompatibilities, so we cannot guarantee that a particular plugin will work. For plugins on the .org repo we block them automatically if they’re known to cause a conflict with our system.
